  • Since the optimized use of sonar systems available for detection is a very practical problem for a given ocean environment, the measure of mission achievability is needed for operating the sonar system efficiently. In this paper, a theory on Measure Of Effectiveness(MOE) for specific mission such as detection is described as the measure of mission achievability, and a recursive Cumulative Detection Probability(CDP) algorithm is found to be most efficient from comparing three CDP algorithms for discrete glimpses search to reduce computation time and memory for complicated scenarios. The three CDPs which are MOE for sonar-maneuver pattern are calculated as time evolves for comparison, based on three different formula depending on the assumptions as follows; dependent or independent glimpses, unimodal or non-unimodal distribution of Probability of Detection(PD) as a function of observation time interval for detection. The proposed CDP algorithm which is made from unimodal formula is verified and applied to OASPP(Optimal Acoustic Search Path Planning) with complicated scenarios.

  • The mechanical and physical properties of wood are strongly dependent upon the slope of grain. Specially, tensile strength is more severely affected by the slope of grain. Therefore, tension tests were performed on small thin wood samples made from Pinus radiata with varying the slope of grain. Determining the tensile strength for clear thin wood samples the other variabilities associated with material, size, drying, defects, etc were discarded. Slope of grain was measured by the slope of grain indicator and actual slope of grain was also determined by a protractor. Correlation coefficients between machine measured and actual slope of grain for 40 pieces of 2×20 mm, 300 mm long Pinus radiata were 0.84 for wide face measurement. Results also showed that tensile strength and MOE from stress wave tests decreased with increasing the slope of grain. This study did not establish a relationships for tensile strength and MOE from stress wave with slope of grain. However, the trends of MOEs from stress wave test with both slope of grain are agreed well with Hankinson's equation. Predicted tension strength curve by Hankinson's equation was also agreed well with the experimental data over the range from 0 to 13 degrees for slope of grain.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the chemical hazards of 74 kinds of commercial anchovy fish sauce in Korea by measuring their biogenic amine content. The biogenic amines detected in commercial anchovy fish sauce were tryptamine, putrescine, cadaverine, tyramine, spermidine, spermine, and histamine. Among them, histamine content was the highest with an average of 1,439.62±812.62 mg/kg. Excessive intake of histamine could result in chemical food poisoning characterized by high blood pressure, headache, and diarrhea. Accordingly, by simulating histamine exposure (repetition=10,000 times) based on the daily intake of 0.969 g of domestic anchovy fish sauce, we found that the estimated average histamine exposure was 24.49±55.48 ㎍/kg bw/day and that the margins of exposure (MOE) value were 139.18 at 1% and 66,141.07 at 95% of 10,000 simulations (9,500 times). As such, it was confirmed that 9,500 out of 10,000 simulations of MOE analysis significantly exceeded MOE 10. Therefore, the risk of exposure to histamine from ingestion of commercial anchovy fish sauce is approximately very low.

  • Oxide-dispersion- strengthened nickel alloys with Hf additions are expected to present high temperature mechanical properties and durable helium resistance based on first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Energetic and charge density evaluations of the helium behaviors were performed in Ni matrix, Y2Hf2O7 oxide and the oxide/matrix interface. With the presence of coherent Y2Hf2O7 in Ni matrix, chances of helium bubbles in Ni can be greatly diminished. The helium atoms shall occupy the interfacial site initially, then diffuse into in the octahedral sites of Y2Hf2O7, and these oxide-captured He atoms prefer to separate individually. Much higher diffusion barrier of He in Y2Hf2O7 than in nickel is related to the strong hybridization between interstitial He-1s and nearest-neighboring O-2p orbitals.

  • Sparse regularization methods have proven effective in addressing the ill-posed equations encountered in moving force identification (MFI). However, the complexity of vehicle loads is often ignored in existing studies aiming at enhancing MFI accuracy. To tackle this issue, a double 𝑙1 regularization method is proposed for MFI based on a response spectrum-based weighted dictionary in this study. Firstly, the relationship between vehicle-induced responses and moving vehicle loads (MVL) is established. The structural responses are then expanded in the frequency domain to obtain the prior knowledge related to MVL and to further construct a response spectrum-based weighted dictionary for MFI with a higher accuracy. Secondly, with the utilization of this weighted dictionary, a double 𝑙1 regularization framework is presented for identifying the static and dynamic components of MVL by the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method successively. To assess the performance of the proposed method, two different types of MVL, such as composed of trigonometric functions and driven from a 1/4 bridge-vehicle model, are adopted to conduct numerical simulations. Furthermore, a series of MFI experimental verifications are carried out in laboratory. The results shows that the proposed method's higher accuracy and strong robustness to noises compared with other traditional regularization methods.

  • This research was conducted to examine the effect of bonding on the bending and shear strength of COMPLY-board when used with meranti face veneer and fire retardant treated particle-board core. For ammonium sulfate, modulus of rupture (MOR) of COMPLY-board increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 10 percent and then decreased after that concentration. However, Minalith showed reverse effect to the result for ammonium sulfate. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) of COMPLY-hoard decreased with increasing chemical concentration and its differences were not significant between concentration. Shear strength was shown better when treated with ammonium sulfate than with Minalith. Wood failure of COMPLY increased with increasing chemical concentration up to 15 percent and then decreased after that concentration. The products of parallel and cross veneer laminated were better than those of COMPLY composed of fire retardant treated particle-board core. Non-treated particle-board was the least in strength. MOE of fire retardant treated COMPLY increased by 136 percent and its MOE by 170 percent as compared with non treated particle-board.

  • A recent study summarized several published genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of cancer and reported two pleiotropic loci at 6p21.1 and 7p15.3 contributing to multiple cancers including lung cancer, noncardia gastric cancer (NCGC), and esophageal squamous-cell carcinoma (ESCC) in Han Chinese. However, it is not known whether such genetic variants have similar effects on the risk of gynecologic cancers, such as ovarian cancer. Hence, we explored associations between genetic variants in 6p21.1 and 7p15.3 and ovarian cancer risk in Han Chinese women. We performed an independent case-control study by genotyping the two loci (rs2494938 A > G at 6p21.1 and rs2285947 A > G at 7p15.3) in a total of 377 ovarian cancer cases and 1,034 cancer-free controls using TaqMan allelic discrimination assay. We found that rs2285947 at 7p15.3 was significantly associated with risk of ovarian cancer with per allele odds ratio (OR) of 1.33 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08-1.64, P=0.008]. However, no significant association was observed between rs2494938 and ovarian cancer risk. Our results showed that rs2285947 at 7p15.3 may also contribute to the development of ovarian cancer in Han Chinese women, further suggesting pleiotropy of 7p15.3 in multiple cancers.

  • Background: Inflammation is widespread in the clinical pathology and closely associated to the progress of many diseases. Triterpenoid saponins as a key group of active ingredients in Panax notoginseng (Burk.) F.H. Chen were demonstrated to show antiinflammatory effects. However, the chemical structures of saponins in the leaves and stems of Panax notoginseng (PNLS) are still not fully clear. Herein, the isolation, purification and further evaluation of the antiinflammatory activity of dammarane-type triterpenoid saponins from PNLS were conducted. Methods: Silica gel and reversed-phase C8 column chromatography were used. Furthermore, preparative HPLC was used as a final purification technique to obtain minor saponins with high purities. MS, NMR experiments, and chemical methods were used in the structural identifications. The antiinflammatory activities of the isolated saponins were assessed by measuring the nitric oxide production in RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharides. Real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to measure the gene expressions of inflammation-related gene. Results: Eight new minor dammarane-type triterpene oligoglycosides, namely notoginsenosides LK1-LK8 (1-8) were obtained from PNLS, along with seven known ones. Among the isolated saponins, gypenoside IX significantly suppressed the nitric oxide production and inflammatory cytokines including tumor necrosis $factor-{\alpha}$, interleukin 10, interferon-inducible protein 10 and $interleukin-1{\beta}$. Conclusion: The eight saponins may enrich and expand the chemical library of saponins in Panax genus. Moreover, it is reported for the first time that gypenoside IX showed moderate antiinflammatory activity.

  • Phyllostachys pubescens planted in the Nambu Forest Experiment station in Jinju city of Gyongnam province was used, to investigate the physical and mechanical property of bamboo in this study. The ages of the P. pubescens were 1, 2 and 3 years, respectively. This experiment was carried out in August and January. The P. pubescens were divided into upper, middle and lower parts according to the growing points. The physical and mechanical properties of the P. pubescens were investigated before and after treatment of hot water and microwave irradiation. 1. The upper part of the P. pubescens indicated the highest static MOE according to the growing points. The range of the static MOE was from 70,000 to 110,000kgf/cm2. 2. When P. pubescens were treated with hot water of 95℃, the ratio of softening was about 10~30%. 3. As microwave irradiation time was increased, the MOE values was decreased in both green and water-saturated bamboos. For the irradiation time of 20 and 30 seconds, the static MOE of P. pubescens was decreased up to about 50% comparing with non-treated.

  • In order to develop structural 'bamboo zephyr board', properties of boards produced by various methods making zephyr were estimated. All of boards were tested with KS(Korean Standards) F 3014 Particle board, and results were summarized as follow. The zephyr boards produced by final 1.5 mm roller space had the best properties(MOR, MOE and IB strength) among boards produced by different final roller space. Also, they had the best properties(MOR and MOE) in bending test after 1 hour soaking treatment after 2 hour-boiling in water, which were similar to properties of boards in dry-condition. Thickness swelling(TS) of all boards was less than 12% required to the Korean Standards A 3014. Zephyr boards produced by final 1.5 mm roller space also had the lowest values among all of boards. Boards produced by non-treatment (in green condition) had the better strength than those of boards produced by different pre-treatment methods(boiling in water and in 0.3% NaOH) in bending test.
