Current efforts to establish links between geometrical features and mechanical performance of nonwoven fabrics in general, and of point-bonded (spot-bonded) nonwovens in particular, would be served significantly by the measurements of Fiber Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) and tensile modulus which occurs during controlled-deformation experiments. Image analysis technique (using the Fast Furier Transform) is used to quantify the fiber orientation distribution. The results suggest that, within a typical window of processing conditions, ODF has a significant influence on the mechanical anisotropy. The data also suggest that mechanical anisotropy of thermally point-bonded nonwovens is likely to be governed by different stress mode according to the applied macroscopic tensile direction.
The astrophysical parameters of four unstudied open star cluster candidates; Ivanov 2, 7, 9, and Harvard 9; are estimated for the first time using the PPMXL database. The stellar density distributions and color-magnitude diagrams for each cluster are used to determine the geometrical structure (cluster center, limited radius, core and tidal radii, the distances from the Sun, from the Galactic center and from the Galactic plane). Also, the main photometric parameters (age, distance modulus, color excesses, membership, total mass, relaxation time, luminosity and mass functions) are estimated.
Blind equalization techniques have been used in broadcast and multipoint communications. In this paper, two criteria of minimizing Euclidian distance between two probability density functions (PDFs) for adaptive blind equalizers are presented. For PDF calculation, Parzen window estimator is used. One criterion is to use a set of randomly generated desired symbols at the receiver so that PDF of the generated symbols matches that of the transmitted symbols. The second method is to use a set of Dirac delta functions in place of the PDF of the transmitted symbols. From the simulation results, the proposed methods significantly outperform the constant modulus algorithm in multipath channel environments.

The present paper develops a method to check the propriety of link functions for binary data. In order to parameterize a certain type of goodness of the link, a family of link functions indexed by a shape parameter is proposed. I first investigate the maximum likelihood estimation of the shape parameter as well as regression parameters and then derive their large sample behaviors of the estimators. A score test is considered to evaluate the goodness of the current link function. For illustration, I employ two families of power transformations, the modulus transformation by John and Draper (1980) and the extended power transformation by Yeo and Johnson (2000), which are appropriate to detect symmetric and asymmetric inadequacy of the selected link function. respectively.
This paper develops a probabilistic methodology for the seismic reliability analysis of structures with random properties. The earthquake loading is assumed to be described in terms of response spectra. The proposed methodology takes advantage of the response spectra and thus does not require explicit dynamic analysis of the actual structure. Uncertainties in the structural properties (e.g. member cross-sections, modulus of elasticity, member strengths, mass and damping) as well as in the seismic load (due to uncertainty associated with the earthquake load specification) are considered. The structural reliability is estimated by determining the failure probability or the reliability index associated with a performance function that defines safe and unsafe domains. The structural failure is estimated using a performance function that evaluates whether the maximum displacement has been exceeded. Numerical illustrations of reliability analysis of elastic and elastic-plastic single-story frame structures are presented first. The extension of the proposed method to elastic multi-degree-of-freedom uncertain structures is also studied and a solved example is provided.
Considering the randomness of material parameters in the laminated composite plate, a scheme of stochastic finite element method to analyze the displacement response variability is suggested. In the formulation we adopted the concept of the weighted integral where the random variable is defined as integration of stochastic field function multiplied by a deterministic function over a finite element. In general the elastic modulus of composite materials has distinct value along an individual axis. Accordingly, we need to assume 5 material parameters as random. The correlations between these random parameters are modeled by means of correlation functions, and the degree of correlation is defined in terms of correlation coefficients. For the verification of the proposed scheme, we employ an independent analysis of Monte Carlo simulation with which statistical results can be obtained. Comparison is made between the proposed scheme and Monte Carlo simulation.
The function f(z) = $e^{p(z)}$ where p(z) is a polynomial of degree n has 2n Julia lines. Julia lines of $e^{p(z)}$ divide the complex plane into 2n equal sectors with the same vertex at the origin. In each sector, $e^{p(z)}$ has radial limits of 0 or innity. Main results of the paper are concerned with maximum curves of $e^{p(z)}$. We deal with some properties of maximum curves of $e^{p(z)}$ and we give some examples of the maximum curves of functions of the form $e^{p(z)}$.
Strain energy function of the isoprene rubber was accurately determined by the experiments of uniaxial tension, planar tension, biaxial tension and volumetric compression. Deformation behavior of alternatively laminated structure of elastomer and reinforced aluminium layers, was analysed by Finite Element method. As a result, Ogden strain energy function obtained from the experiments describes the hyperelastic characteristics of the rubber very well. The compressibility of the rubber reduces axial stiffness of the structure. The axial stiffness of alternatively laminated structure being larger than shear stiffness. Which enables the structure to be shear-deformed easily.
Finite element computations were carried out to study the indentation by rigid cone with half-angle of $70.3^{\circ}$ for 72 different combinations of elasto-plastic properties that cover the wide range of mechanical parameters of common engineering solid materials. The dimensional analysis and representative strain concept were used in the analysis. It was shown that for the same representative strain value, the loading curvature C can be formulated under two different forms, which are based on two alternative dimensionless functions. The present study's one is simpler than the other previously found by other authors using the similar approach. For a wide range of material's parameters, the hardness-modulus ratio should be a parabolic function of ${\sigma}E$, rather than a power law function earlier proposed.
Enhanced three-dimensional finite elements for geometrically nonlinear analysis of cable-supported structures are presented. The cable element, derived by using the concept of an equivalent modulus of elasticity and assuming the deflection curve of a cable as catenary function, is proposed to model the cables. The stability functions for a frame member are modified to obtain a numerically stable solution. Various numerical examples are solved to illustrate the versatility and efficiency of the proposed finite element model. It is shown that the finite elements proposed in this study can be very useful for geometrically nonlinear analysis as well as free vibration analysis of three-dimensional cable-supported structures.
