Low-Complexity Joint Estimation Algorithms of Frequency Offset and Carrier Phase for Digital Communication Systems (디지털 통신 시스템에서 주파수 옵셋과 반송파 위상의 간단한 동시 추정 알고리듬)

  • In this paper, we investigate the design of three low-complexity joint estimation algorithms(LJEAs) for frequency offset and carrier phase. The proposed LJEAs are based on the interpolation technique of correlation values of the received signal in frequency and phase domains. With these algorithms, the estimation ranges $\Delta$f$_{d}$${\times}$T$_{s}$ . are less than 1/2N$_{s}$ , and 1/N$_{s}$ which are comparable to conventional algorithms. The Proposed LJEAs require only 2N$_{s}$ or 4N$_{s}$ complex multiplications which are very simple compared with the conventional algorithms. Nevertheless the estimation accuracies of the LJEAs are as good as those of the conventional algorithms. Suitable areas of application include joint estimation of frequency offset and carrier phase in burst-mode digital transmission such as satellite communications.

  • A bi-directional symmetric prediction technique has been developed to improve coding efficiency of B-slice and to reduce the computational complexity required to estimate two motion vectors. On the contrary to the conventional bi-directional mode which encodes both forward and backward motion vectors, it only encodes a single forward motion vector, and the missing backward motion vector is derived in a symmetric way from the forward motion vector using temporal distance between forward/backward reference frames to and from the current B picture. Since the backward motion vector is derived from the forward motion vector, it can halve the computational complexity for motion estimation, and also reduces motion vector data to encode. This technique always derives the backward motion vector from the forward motion vector, however, there are cases when the forward motion vector is better to be derived from the backward motion vector especially in scene changes. In this paper, we generalize the idea of the symmetric coding with forward motion vector coding, and propose a new symmetric coding with backward motion vector coding and adaptive selection between the conventional symmetric mode and the proposed symmetric mode based on rate-distortion optimization.

  • This paper presents modal analysis and mean conveying velocity (M.C.V.) control of bowl parts feeder activated by piezoactuators. Bowl parts feeders are being widely used in many industry fields for automatic assembly line. In general, the electromagnet has been and being used as exciting actuator of these vibratory bowl feeders. However, because of complexity of its mechanism and limited capability of the electromagnet actuator, there exist various impending problems such as severe noise, nonlinear motion of parts, passive characteristics and so forth. As one of solutions for these problems, piezoelectric actuators as new actuating technology have been proposed recently to excite the bowl parts feeder. In this paper, modal analysis of the proposed model has been performed to examine the modal characteristics of the model by using commercial FEM software and modeling with respects to MCV is constructed. Finally, MCV of the parts is to be controlled to track the desired one with PID controller.

A Submode Selection Method for Advanced Intra Coding in H.263 (H.263 Advanced Intra Coding 모드 선택 방법)

  • The Advanced Intra Coding(AIC) mode included in the H.263+ which is for video ceding at low bit rates, selects one prediction direction of DCT coefficients among three directions for every intra macroblock. Based ()n the selected direction, It uses a different DCT scanning order, quantization scheme, and VLC table. The use of the AIC mode brings higher compression ratio and improved PSNR than the H.263 baseline. This paper proposes a simplified submode selection method for a direction of the DCT coefficient prediction for advanced ultra coding in H.263. Compared to the conventional method the proposed simplified method can achieve a similar coding Performance at computational complexity reduced to 1/7 and with much less memory requirement. The proposed method will be useful in implementing a simplified H.263 system.

  • In this paper, an uplink pilot signal structure is proposed for millimeter wave(mmWave)-based mobile wireless backhaul. For the transmit diversity of two antenna ports, uplink pilot signals generated from the Zadoff-Chu sequence can be mapped in an interleaved mode or continuous mode on the frequency axis, and channel estimation algorithms are different depending on the pilot signal mapping schemes. Through a simulation under Rayleigh fading channel assuming a subway scenario, the interleaved mapping scheme showed no performance degradation compared to the continuous mapping scheme and the implementation complexity of the uplink channel estimator was reduced due to the interleaved mapping scheme.

  • In this paper, we introduce the notion of intelligent communication by introducing a novel intelligent receiver model. This receiver is continually evolving and learns and improves in performance as it compiles its experience over time. In digital communication context, in a typical training mode, it jearns the concept of "1" as is deteriorated by arbitrary (not necessarily additive as is typically assumed) disturbance and /or modulation. After learning "1", in test mode, it classifies the received signal "1" and "0" almost completely. The intelligent receiver as implemented is grounded on the recently introduced Stochastic Morphological Sampling Theorem(SMST), a distribution-free result which gives theoretical bounds on the sample complexity(training size) needed for the required performance parameters such as accuracy($\varepsilon$) and confidence($\delta$). Based on this theorem, we demonstrate --almost irrespective of channel and modulation model-- the number of samples needed to learn the concept of "1" is not too "large" and the resulting universal receiver structure, that corresponding to classical Nearest Neighbor rule in Pattern Recognition Theory, is trivial. We check the surprising efficiency and validity of this model through some simple simulations. and validity of this model through some simple simulations.

An Implementation Method of Frequency Offset Synchronization Using Compact CORDIC for OFDM Systems (OFDM 시스템에서 Compact CORDIC을 이용한 주파수 오프셋 동기화 구현 기법)

  • In this letter, we propose a compact CORDIC processor for implementation of carrier frequency synchronization block in an OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) system. The compact CORDIC processor is proposed by using inherenct properties of an OFDM system for estimation and compensation of carrier frequency offset, and is composed of a compact CORDIC preprocessor and a compact CORDIC processor. The compact CORDIC preprocessor plays a role of normalizing input signal efficiently, and the compact CORDIC processor is proposed to perform the vectoring mode and rotational mode jointly in CORDIC operation for carrier frequency synchronization. It is shown by FPGA implementation that the proposed compact CORDIC processor can achieve better performance with a significantly reduced hardware complexity than the conventional CORDIC approach.

A Transmission Technique for Paging Indicator in OFDM-based Cellular Systems (OFDM 이동통신 시스템의 Paging Indicator 전송 방식)

  • In this paper, a transmission technique of paging indicator (PI) on the existing preamble is proposed to reduce power consumption of the user equipment in idle mode for OFDM-based cellular systems. Compared with the PI transmission technique using the L1/L2 control channel, the PI transmission technique using preamble has advantages of not requiring additional overhead for PI transmission as well as reducing computational complexity for PI detection. Synchronization and PI detection techniques are descried for OFDM-based cellular systems, especially for mobile WiMAX systems. It is shown by computer simulation that the PI can be transmitted using the preamble (or common synch symbol) without affecting performances of synchronization and cell searching in mobile WiMAX systems.

Multi-Stakeholders in Public and Cultural Diplomacies as Seen through the Lens of Public-Private Partnerships: A Comparative Case Study of Germany and South Korea

  • With the emergence of partnerships with private actors in public and cultural diplomacies, complexity in the relations among the various stakeholders involved has arisen, and yet the relevant research is insufficient to shed any beneficial light on such issues. By looking at public-private partnerships, the present study determined that resource dependence, trust, and risk are the main factors affecting the feasibility of partnerships, and inductively developed propositions on their effects. In an explorative case study, Germany (decentralized mode of governance) and South Korea (centralized mode of governance) were compared as exemplary contrasting system designs. The results revealed that risk and trust are likely to affect the feasibility of partnerships, whereas resource dependence is not. The following additional findings also were made: (1) there are cultural actors in a 'for profit, but with non-profit purposes' sector; (2) an interpersonal level of trust positively affects partnerships; (3) 'taking risks' brings about 'innovation'; (4) the existence of international commonalities between any two cases depending on the actors' shared role, whether public or private; (5) public actors' emphasis on mutual trust, program budget and execution, innovations coming from taking risks, commitment and ownership, and unexpected situations; (6) private actors' consideration of 'publicness' and grant-seeking or financial support as important incentives, and their desire that public actors to show more trust, professionalism, and ownership with less control over budget execution. With its qualitative approach and in-depth analysis, the present study yielded new insights, notwithstanding the relatively small sample data.

Implementation of a Flexible Architecture for a Mobile Power Cart Applying Design Patterns (설계 패턴을 이용한 모바일 파워 카트의 유연한 아키텍처 구현)

  • Automated guided vehicles have been used for a long time to increase work efficiency in the logistics field, but it is difficult to apply to a variety of logistics sites due to either the restricted movement mechanism or expensive devices. In this paper, we present a flexible software architecture that is hardware-independent for a mobile power cart of the follow mode and implement it using a ROS software platform. Through the SCV analysis for the system functionalities, we design a package to track a user movement and a package to control a new hardware platform. It has an advantage to use a variety of movement algorithms and hardware platforms by applying the strategy pattern and the template method pattern for the design of a software architecture. Through the performance evaluation, we show that the proposed design is maintainable in terms of a software complexity and it detects a user's movement by obtaining a user skeleton information so that it can control a hardware platform to move at a certain distance.
