  • This paper presents a new systematic contingency selection and screening method for transient stability. The variation of modal synchronizing torque coefficient(MSTC) is computed using eigen-sensitivity analysis of the electromechanical oscillation modes in small signal stability model and contingencies are ranked in decreasing order of the sensitivities of the MSTC(SMSTC). The relevant clusters are identified using the eigenvector or participating factor. The proposed algorithm is tested on the KEPCO system. Ranking obtained by the SMSTC is consistent with the time simulation results by PSS/E.

  • It is necessary to develop an efficient analysis method to identify the dynamic characteristics of a large mechanical structure and update its finite element model. That is because these processes need the huge computation of a large structure and iterative estimation due to the use of the first- order sensitivity. To efficiently carry out these processes, a new method, called the generalized free-interface mode sensitivity method, has been proposed in the authors' preceeding paper. This method is based on substructuring approach such as a free-interface method and a generalized synthesis algorithm. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to the model updating of a car body structure to verify its accuracy and reliability for a large mechanical structure.

  • In this paper, modal analysis of wind-power generator rotor system was performed by using finite element method. Experimental modal analysis of generator rotor system was performed and the result were compared with analytical ones. Sensitivity method and localized modification method were used to update finite element model. As a result of updating finite element model, errors of natural freguency were reduced within 0.5% and MAC value was improved near by l. Stability characteristics of wind-power generator rotor-bearing system through harmonic analysis about several external force will be analyzed using finite element model.

  • A damage in structure alters its dynamic characteristics. The change is characterized by changes in the modal parameter, i.e., modal frequencies, modal damping value and mode shape associated with each modal frequency. Changes also occur in some of the structural parameters; namely, the mass, damping, stiffness matrices of the structure. In this paper, evaluation of changes in stiffness matrix of a structure is presented as a method not only for identifying the presence of the damage but also locating the damage. It is shown that changed stiffness matrix can be accurately estimated a sensitivity coefficient matrix derived from modifying mode shapes, First, with 4 story shear structure models, the effect of presence of damage in a structure on its stiffness matrix is studied. By using these analytical model, the effectiveness of using change of stiffness matrix in detecting and locating damages is demonstrated. To validate the predicted changing stiffness and its location, the obtained results are compared to the reanalysis result which shows good agreement.

  • Techniques which are able to predict and control dynamic characteristics, not affecting the vibrational characteristics on the modification of structural design, are being studied. As one of these techniques, experimental modal analysis is widely applied by many researchers. In this study, modal analysis is performed using transfer matrix method by a macro computer. The developed program would estimate the structural modal parameters precisely, and the validity of this program is certified by comparing with the experimental results of .GAMMA A. structure. Estimated modal parameters(natural frequency, vibrational mode, equivalent mass, etc.) are in accord with the experimental results. Also, the optimal location of the additive mass is determined by the evaluation of the vibrational mode and the equivalent mass. The relation between the additive mass and the equivalent mass is specified, and we come to know that the ratio of equivalent mass to additive mass alter linearly within the range of 20%.

  • Detection of structural damage is an inverse problem in structural engineering. There are three main questions in the damage detection: existence, location and extent of the damage. In concept, the natural frequency and mode shapes of any structure must satisfy an eigenvalue problem. But, if a potential damage exists in a structure, an error resulting from the substitution of the refined analytical finite element model and measured modal data into the structural eigenvalue equation will occur, which is called the residual modal forces, and can be used as an indicator of potential damage in a structure. In this study, a useful damage detection method is proposed and compared with other two methods. Two degree-of-freedom system and Cantilever beam are used to demonstrate the approach. And the results of three introduced method are compared.

  • The dynamic characteristics of a HDD suspension system are investigated by finite element analysis and experimental modal analysis. A finite element model of the suspension Type850 was developed for unloaded case. The calculated vibration modes were compared with measurements and agree well in shape and frequency except some local modes. Local thickness and Young's modulus of the finite element model are updated by modal tuning method to develop the precise FE model. A sensitivity matrix of the natural frequencies for some design variables was calculated using finite difference method. Most natural frequencies calculated by the tuned FE model coincide with the measurements and the errors between them are less than 2%.

  • In this paper, a new damage detection and quantification method has been presented to perform detection and quantification of structural damage under ambient vibration loadings. To extract modal properties of the structural system under ambient excitation, natural excitation technique (NExT) and eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) are employed. Sensitivity matrices of the dynamic residual force vector have been derived and used in the parameter subset selection method to identify multiple damaged locations. In the sequel, the steady state genetic algorithm (SSGA) is used to determine quantified levels of the identified damage by minimizing errors in the modal flexibility matrix. In this study, performance of the proposed damage detection and quantification methodology is evaluated using a finite element model of a truss structure with considerations of possible experimental errors and noises. A series of numerical examples with five different damage scenarios including a challengingly small damage level demonstrates that the proposed methodology can efficaciously detect and quantify damage under noisy ambient vibrations.

  • This paper proposes a new algorithm of MS-EIDV (modal sensitivity-effective independence distribution vector) for determining optimal accelerometer locations (OAL) by using the Fisher Information Matrix (FIM) derived from mode-shape sensitivities. Also, the paper provides a reasonable guideline for selecting OAL which can reflect dynamic responses of a structure effectively. Since OAL should be determined with known values of structural parameters but since the parameters can be estimated by applying an inverse method such as SI (system identification) using measured response, the paper proposes a statistical method to overcome the paradox by considering the error bound of the structural parameters. To examine the proposed methods, a frequency-domain SI method has been applied. By using the identified results, the minimum necessary number of accelerometers could be selected depending on the number of target measurable modes. Through simulation studies, the results by applying EIDV method directly using the information of mode shapes were compared with those by applying the proposed MS-EIDV.

  • Structural Dynamics Modification (SDM) is a very effective technique to improve structure's dynamic characteristics by adding or removing auxiliary structures. changing material properties and shape of structure. Among those of SDM technique, the method to change shape of structure has been mostly relied on engineer's experience and trial-and-error process which are very time consuming. In order to develop a systematic method to change structure shape, surface grooving technique is studied and successfully applied to HDD cover model. To check the effectiveness of this surface grooving technique, the grooved HDD cover design was manufactured using rapid prototyping and experimentally tested to prove the effectiveness of the grooving method as one of SDM techniques. And the modal strain energy and eigenvalue sensitivity method for choosing the initial starting point are compared.
