  • The normal coordinates of a nonclassically damped systems are coupled by nonzero off-diagonal elements of modal damping matrix. The relationship between modal coupling and the frequency separation of the natural modes is presented in this paper. Contrary to widely accepted beliefs, increasing the frequency separation of the natural modes does not neccessarily diminish the effect of modal coupling. Consequently, in the pratical engineering applications, wide frequency separation of the natural modes would not be sufficient for neglecting modal coupling.

  • Conventional modal analysis techniques are known to be inappropriate for asymmetrical rotor systems, when the equations of motion are written in the stationary coordinates, due to the presence of time varying parameters. This paper presents a generalized modal analysis method for asymmetrical rotor systems in the stationary coordinates, employing the modulated coordinates and the lambda matrix formulation. A numerical example with a flexible asymmetric rotor model is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed modal analysis method. As an application of the proposed method, modal analysis is also performed with an open cracked rotor system.

  • An experimental modal analysis is the process to identify structure's dynamic characteristics such as resonant frequencies, damping values and mode shapes. An experimental model was made of stainless steel in the shape of a circular cylindrical shell and installed on the test bed with jigs. For investigating vibrational characteristics of the continuous circular cylindrical shell with intermediate supports, modal testing is performed by using impact hammer, accelerometer and 8-channel FFT analyzer. The frequency response function(FRF) measurements are also made on the experimental model within the frequency range from 0 to 4kHz. Modal parameters are identified from resonant peaks in the FRF's and animated deformation patterns associated with each of the resonances are shown on a computer screen. The experimental results are compared with analytical and FEA results.

  • The present paper proposes a generalized modal analysis procedure for non-uniform, distributed-parameter rotor-bearing systems. An exact element matrix is derived for a Timoshenko shaft model which contains rotary inertia, shear deformation, gyroscopic effect and internal damping. Complex coordinates system is adopted for the convenience in formulation. A generalized orthogonality condition is provided to make the modal decomposition possible. The generalized modal analysis by using a modal decomposition delivers exact and closed form solutions both for frequency and time responses. Two numerical examples are presented for illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves that the proposed method is very efficient and useful for the analysis of distributed-parameter rotor-bearing systems.

  • In this paper, analysis and control of the flexible multibody system using MATLAB is presented. The equations of motion of a flexible body are derived in terms of the modal coordinate. The rigid-flexible multibody dynamic solver is developed. Finite element information required to analyze motion of flexible bodies is imported from ANSYS. The modified finite element data, such as modal mass matrix, modal stiffness matrix and constraint mode shapes, is calculated in the solver. Since the solver is developed using MATLAB, it is very easy to connect with SIMULINK which is widely used to control motion of the multibody system. Several simulations are implemented to verify the developed solver. A control example is carried out and the usefulness of the developed solver is demonstrated.

  • This paper introduces modeling and its modal analysis procedure for exact and closed form solution of in-plane vibrations of general Timoshenko frame structures using exact dynamic element method(EDEM). The derivation procedure of the exact system dynamic matrices for Timoshenko beam frames is described. A new modal analysis procedure is also proposed since the conventional modal analysis schemes are not adequate for the proposed, exact system dynamic matrix. The proposed method provides exact modal parameters as well as all kinds of closed form solutions for general frame structures. Two numerical examples are presented for validating and illustrating the proposed method. The numerical study proves that the proposed method is useful for dynamic analysis of frame structures.

  • This paper explains how we define and represent modality in E-HowNet. Following Lyons (1977, reviewed in Hsieh 2003, among others), we hold that modals express a speaker's opinion or attitude toward a proposition and hence have a pragmatic dimension and recognize five kinds of modal categories, i.e. epistemic, deontic, ability, volition and expectation modality. We then present a representational formalism that contains the three most basic components of modal meaning: modal category, positive or negative and strength. Such a formula can define not only modal words but also words that contain modal meanings and cope with co-compositions of modals and the negation construction.

  • This paper describes an integrated approach process to carry out pre-test, model correlation and updating analysis on the sub-frame of a vehicle. In this study, it was found that the modal test could be more efficient when the exciting point was selected on the area with high driving point residue. Such area could be located with the aid of finite element modal analysis. The model correlation was appraised in conjunction with the modal parameters between modal test and finite elements analysis. Also, the finite element model updating was obtained the good resultant using the iteration method based on sensitivity analysis results that carried out the variation of natural frequencies and MAC for the material properties. Finally, optimization of vehicle subframe was carried out the analysis of core location and physical properties by tow steps.

  • The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of vibration of a steel frame structure is performed to extract modal parameters. The theoretical background of the POD method is introduced briefly, and this technique is further applied to free vibration displacements of one bay-two story steel frame structure to extract the modal parameters. From the POD analysis of the steel frame structure, it is found that important modal parameters such as true mode shapes, modal kinematic energy, natural frequencies, and damping ratios can be obtained for the building efficiently and in detail. Therefore, it is concluded that the POD method could be one of the useful techniques in analysis of vibration of structures.
