Automotive exhaust is suspected to be one of the major reasons of the rapid increase in greenhouse effect gases in ambient air. As the concerns regarding global worming were increased, the pressure on mobile source greenhouse gas (GHG) emission were also increased. Carbon Dioxides contribute over 90% of total GHG emission and the mobile source occupies about 20% of this $CO_2$ emission. In this study, in order to investigate $CO_2$ emission characteristics from gasoline and LPG passenger cars (PC), which is the most dominant vehicle type in Korea, 53 vehicles were tested on the chassis dynamometer. $CO_2$ emissions and fuel consumption efficiency were measured. The emission characteristics by fuel type, model year, mileage, vehicle speed and transmission type were also discussed. Test modes used in this study were NIER 10 modes and CVS-75 mode, which have been used for developing emission factors and testing new vehicles respectively. The results of this study showed that the main factors which have significant influences on the $CO_2$ emissions are fuel type, transmission type, displacement of vehicle and mileage. The correlation between $CO_2$ emission and FE was also determined by comparing $CO_2$ emission and fuel consumption efficiency. The overall results of this study will greatly contribute to domestic greenhouse gas emissions calculation and designing national strategies for climate change.

In order to improve air quality in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), the "Special Act on Seoul Metropolitan Air Quality Improvement" has been enforced since 2005. The strategy has resulted in some reduction of air pollution, but there has not been much research into the quantitative impact analysis of each separate preventive countermeasure. Therefore, we analyzed nitrogen oxide reduction resulting from implementation of the emission control plan for on-road mobile sources. The MM5-SMOKE-CMAQ model system was employed for air quality prediction. Reduced $NO_x$ emissions for SMA was 16,561 ton, 4.7% of reduction rate, in 2007. One countermeasure, tighter acceptable standards for manufacturing vehicles, dominated other countermeasures for effective $NO_x$ emission control. Large spatial differences in reduced emissions, those for Seoul being twice that of Incheon and Gyeonggi, showed greater $NO_x$ emission reduction impact in the heart of the metropolitan complex. The $NO_2$ concentration decreased by 0.60 ppb (2.0%), 0.18 ppb (1.5%), and 0.22 ppb (1.7%) in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi, respectively. Concentration decreases in spring and winter were larger, 1.5~2.0 times, than summer and fall. However, the $NO_2$ reduction impact did not correspond directly to local $NO_x$ emission controls in the city area because of the natural flow and dispersion, both urban and downwind.

An objective of this study is to give practical information that could be used for calculating pollutant emission factors and fuel economy from Korean Inspection & Maintenance program, which has been using steady state acceleration simulation mode. Concentration results from I/M test is adequately converted to mass emission factors and fuel efficiency data, which have unit of g/km and km/L, respectively. Exhaust volume flow(EVF), which is for converting emission result from concentration to mass, is measured by tracer method in various vehicle speed - power condition. It is found that there is an apparent second order relationship between EVF and vehicle inertia weight. EVF is expressed in function of vehicle inertia weight in order to estimate EVF in I/M site without measuring device. Converted mass emission results from measured EVF and raw emission analyzer show a satisfactory agreement with those from conventional CVS-bag type measurement system. Mass emission factors and fuel efficiency from measured EVF and estimated EVF also show good agreement to each other. Considering that an I/M program has great advantages to recruit-based emission test in terms of the number of test vehicle, the information in this study can be used for developing an alternative procedure to collect more various data to establish national database of mobile emission factors and fuel economy, even though the driving cycle in I/M program is steady state cycle rather than transient cycle.
NOx and PM are important air pollutants as vehicle management policy aspect. Medium-duty truck is the main source of the pollutants although the vehicle market share is only 3.5%. National emission portion of NOx and PM form the mobile sourece are 14% and 16% respectively. In this study it was investigated that characteristics of air pollutants emission on medium duty truck equipped with EGR and SCR system. Vehicle's test reflected driving cycle on the chassis dynamometer, and applied test cycle was WHVC(World Harmonized Vehicle Cycle) mode. The test cycle include three segments, represent urban, rural and motorway driving. Based on the test results NOx, PM, HC were less emitted form SCR vehicle than EGR vehicle. And CO was less emitted form EGR vehicle than SCR vehicle due to CO oxidation reaction on DPF surface. And most air pollutants reduced as average vehicle speed increased. Pollutants were less emitted on motorway section than urban and rural sections. But highly NOx emission on motorway section was verified according to increased EGR ratio on fast vehicle speed. HC and CO additional emission was identified as 68%, 58% respectively during SCR vehicle's cold engine start emission test. NOx additional emission was detected by 24% on SCR vehicle's condition of engine cold start while not detected on vehicle equipped with EGR. SCR vehicle's additional NOx emission was derived from low reaction temperature during engine cold start condition. medium-duty truck emission characteristics were investigated in this study and expected to used to improve air pollutants management policy of medium-duty truck equipped with SCR & EGR.

This study aims at enhancing the objective estimation of social cost of air quality due to mobile emission. More specifically, it examines the difference between the daily oriented and hourly oriented estimation results of social air quality cost and draws implications from the comparative analysis. The result indicates that the social cost of air quality differs up to approximately 24 times depending on the analysis time period. Moneywise, the difference between daily and hourly assignments amounts to the average of 653.5 billion won whereas only 1% of error occurred in the estimation result based on peak and nonpeak based hourly assignment. This study reaffirms the need for time-based travel demand management for emission reduction, and confirms the feasibility of emission estimation by travel demand forecasting method over the conventional method employed by the CAPSS.

PURPOSES : The objective of this study is to investigate the capability of the combined model of traffic simulation, emission and air dispersion models on the impact analysis of air quality of mobile sources such as vehicles. METHODS : The improvement of the quality of life brings about the increasing interest of the public environment. Many endeavors including the travel demand management, the application of the state-of-the-art ITS technologies, the promotion of eco-friendly vehicles have been tried in transportation area to reduce the modal emissions. Especially, it is expected that the increasing number of eco-friendly vehicles in the road network would be able to reduce the pipe-tail emissions tremendously. From this perspective, we have performed a study on the impact analysis of the popularization of the eco-friendly vehicle in the place of the fossil fuel energy powered vehicles on the surrounding air quality using the combined framework of microscopic traffic simulation, emission and air dispersion model. RESULTS : The combined model successfully captured the effect of moving to the eco-friendly vehicles on the air quality, and the results showed that the increasing usage of eco-friendly vehicles can improve the surrounding air quality tremendously and that the air dispersion model plays a crucial role in the investigation of the air quality change around the main corridor. CONCLUSIONS : This study demonstrated the capability of the combined model showing the spatio-tempral change of emission concentration.
The autonomous vehicles (AVs) could make a positive or negative impact on reducing mobile emissions. This study investigated the changes of mobile emissions that could be caused by large-scale adoption of AVs. The factors of road capacity increase and speed limit increase impacts were simulated using a conceptual modeling approach that combines a hypothetical speed-emission function and a traffic demand model using a virtual transportation network. The simulation results show that road capacity increase impact is significant in decreasing mobile emissions until the market share of AVs is less than 80%. If the road capacity increases by 100%, the mobile emissions will decrease by about 30%. On the other hand, driving speed limit increase impact is significant in increasing mobile emissions, and the environmentally desirable speed limit was found at around 95 km/h. If the speed limit increases to 140 km/h, the mobile emissions will increase by about 25%. This is because some vehicles begin to bypass the congested routes at high speeds as speed limit increases. Based on the simulation results, it is clear that the vehicle platooning technology implemented at reasonable speed limit is one of the AV technologies that are encouraging from the environmental point of view.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are well known as ozone precursors from photochemical reactions and contribute to the formation of photochemical smog which pose health hazards. Also, some of these compounds directly affect the human health due to their toxicity such as benzene. In this study, NMVOCs composition in exhaust gas from recreational vehicle (RV) and (MPV) were characterized using a chassis dynamometer. The results for NMVOCs have reported that alkanes emission was higher than alkenes, aromatics and cycloalkanes due to reactive of diesel oxidation catalysts. The NMVOCs composition according to carbon number was highly distributed between C3 and C6~C8. During the engine cold start condition, NMVOCs emission was higher compared to the engine hot start condition due to the increased catalytic activity. The NMVOCs emission with DPF increased compared to that without DPF. The results of this study will be provide to calculate VOCs emissions from mobile source.

In 1995 Kimchi refrigerator was developed at first, and has used HFC-134a as refrigerant. Kimchi refrigerator has been made 1,044,694 on the basis of 2010, disposed about 160,000 per year. Although mobile air conditioning, commercial refrigerator, general refrigerator is regarded as a major source of HFC-134a, little information is available for its emission characteristics of HFC-134a. This paper addresses the fugitive emission factors of Kimchi refrigerator at use-phase and disposal-phase. The residual quantities of Korean-made fifty three waste Kimchi refrigerators were weighed using a commercial recover of refrigerants to determine the emission factors at the disposal-phase. On the other hand, the emission factors at use-phase were estimated from the residual quantities and operating times. The average residual rate of forty three scarp Kimchi refrigerators is determined to be $74.6{\pm}5.2%$. The emission factor at the use-phase is estimated to be $3.5{\pm}0.8%/yr$ as a result of using average age of 11.7 years and the average residual rate determined here. The emission factor at the disposal-phase is determined to be 31.3% after adopting 58% of the recycling rate of refrigerant reported by Recycling Center. We estimate 3.1 g/yr for the average emission quantity of HFC-134a per operating refrigerator, while 22.5 g for that per waste Kimchi refrigerator. Since the chemical compositions of refrigerant of waste Kimchi refrigerator were the same as those of new refrigerant, it is expected that the HFC-134a recovered from waste Kimchi refrigerator can be reused for refrigerant.

The purpose of this study is to quantify the contribution of high emitting vehicles to mobile emission inventories. Analyzed emission data include $NO_x$, HC, and CO results, which were measured through the vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program in Seoul metropolitan area. The high emitting vehicles were identified as the top 5% worst polluting cars of the fleet. We estimated that 5% of the gasoline passenger car fleet, which is high emitters, generated 25.5% of $NO_x$, 34.5% of HC, and 66.1% of CO emissions of total inventories for gasoline passenger car fleet in year 2010. In the study, we identified that the older vehicles (older than ten years) and high mileage vehicles (more than 120,000 km driven) comprised high emitter fleet with 70.9% and 71.2%, respectively. The emission contribution of high emitters became larger in younger fleet than in the older fleet. This is due to the reduced emission rates in newly manufactured vehicles, which were developed under the more stringent emission regulation limits. This analysis implies that high emitters could be responsible for an even larger fraction of total vehicular emissions as more advanced technology vehicles are being incorporated into the current vehicle fleet. The findings suggested that the high emitting vehicles should be primarily considered for in-use vehicle emission management program, such as I/M, accelerated vehicle retirement, or catalytic converter replacement, in order to enhance the effectiveness of selected program.
