In this letter, non-regenerative Amplify-and-Forward (AF) relay systems based on half and full duplex schemes are investigated and their performance is analyzed and compared in terms of outage probability. Although the AF relay systems have been widely investigated in many previous literatures, most of them adopted a half duplex scheme due to hardware limitation and mathematical tractability. To the best of our knowledge, this letter is the first study to investigate the performance of the full duplex AF relay system considering practical hardware limitations. In full duplex AF relay systems, it is important to secure the isolation between transmit and receive antennas. Our numerical and simulation results show that there exists a threshold point of the isolation gain that the full duplex relay system outperforms the half duplex relay system.

Relay-assisted multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technique has become a promising candidate for next generation broadband wireless communications for high speed access. In this paper, we propose channel selective relay-based MIMO transmission system. The performance of relay-based system can be improved by using the subcarriers selectively based on the channel condition between relay and mobile station. Simulation results show that the proposed relay-based system considerably outperforms the conventional relay-based system.

The cooperative communication systems using MIMO(multiple input multiple-output) relay are known as one of the most promising techniques to improve the performance and coverage of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we propose the cooperative communication systems using the relay with multi-antennas and DSTC(distributed space time coding) for decode-and-forward protocol. As using DSTC for DF(decode-and-forward), we can minimize the risk of error propagation at the wireless system using relay system. Also, the MIMO channel cab be formed by multi-antenna and DSTC at the MS(mobile station)-RS(relay station) and at the RS-BS(base station). Therefore, obtaining truly constructive the MIMO diversity and cooperative diversity gain from the proposed approach, the performance of system can be more improved than one of conventional system (relay with single antenna, no relay). The improvement in bit error rate is investigated through numerical analysis of the cooperative communication system with the proposed approach.

In this paper, we propose a bi-directional coding method (BTC) using time reversal mirror for effective data exchange between mobile stations and basestations. In conventional relay systems, while one node transmits data, other nodes should keep silent to avoid interference. Thus, to interchange data between basestations and mobile stations, it needs four stages. However, using the proposed BTC method, a relay station transmits a probe source before data transmission, and using this information, mobile stations and basestations transmit data to the relay station simultaneously. Therefore, since it exchanges data in only two steps, the system achieves improved system capacity. In addition, owing to no need for complex calculation, the relay system can be implemented with low complexity. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves enhanced system capacity.

Mobile relay systems have been adopted by $4^{th}$ generation mobile systems as an alternative method to extend cell coverage as well as to enhance the system throughput at cell-edges. In order to achieve such performance gains, the mobile relay systems require path selection and resource allocation schemes that are specifically designed for these systems which make use of additional radio resources not needed in single-hop systems. This paper proposes an integrated path selection and resource allocation scheme for LTE-Advanced relay systems using collaborative communication. We first define the problem of maximizing the downlink throughput of LTE-Advanced relay systems using collaborative communication and transform it into a multi-dimensional multi-choice backpacking problem. The proposed Lagrange multiplier-based heuristic algorithm is then applied to derive the approximate solution to the maximization problem. It is shown through simulations that the approximate solution obtained by the proposed scheme can achieve a near-optimal performance.

The IEEE802.16j standard uses non-transparent relay stations to extend coverage. There are two types of non-transparent relay modes, that is, the time-division transmit and receive (TTR) relay mode which can operate with one of two types of frame structures, a single-frame and multiframe structure, and the simultaneous transmit and receive (STR) relay mode. In this paper, we analyze the relay performance of TTR and STR relay modes in IEEE 802.16j MMR system. We also propose a fair resource allocation scheme for the downlink relay frame. Numerical results show that relay performance of the TTR with a single-frame or a multiframe structure and that of the STR relay modes are almost the same in a two-hop system. However, in a three-hop system, the TTR mode with a single-frame structure outperforms other relay modes.

In this paper, we investigate the security performance for cooperative networks over Nakagami-m fading channels. Based on whether the channel state information (CSI) of wiretap link is available or not, optimal relay selection (ORS) and suboptimal relay selection (SRS) schemes are considered. Also, multiple relays combining (MRC) scheme is considered for comparison purpose. The exact and asymptotic closed-form expressions for secrecy outage probability (SOP) are derived and simulations are presented to validate the accuracy of our proposed analytical results. The numerical results illustrate that the ORS is the best scheme and SRS scheme is better than MRC scheme in some special scenarios such as when the destination is far away from the relays. Furthermore, through asymptotic analysis, we obtain the closed-form expressions for the secrecy diversity order and secrecy array gain for the three different selection schemes. The secrecy diversity order is closely related to the number of relays and fading parameter between relay and destination.

In this paper, we proposed a transmission scheme for a full-duplex relay system that minimizes outage probability. A relay system with the full-duplex relay can mitigate resource inefficiency of a half-duplex relay system. However, the mobile station suffers from the interference because the base station and the relay station transmits signal simultaneously to the mobile station. First, we suggest a layered broadcasting for full-duplex relaying. Second, we derive an optimal power allocation for the layered broadcasting in terms of the outage probability minimization. The proposed algorithm shows better performance than a half-duplex relaying system with and without the diversity, and a conventional full-duplex relaying system.

Recently, as the proliferation of mobile smart devices, multimedia content sharing technologies between mobile smart devices have provided. For efficient content sharing in wireless networks, the hierarchical streaming network has been proposed. However, member devices in a network group experience frequent delay while playing multimedia content files because of excessive network resource occupation between a relay and member devices. In this paper, we propose an efficient multimedia streaming relay method using media buffer control to reduce network congestion during streaming from the relay device to the member devices. We also measured the number of buffering and buffering time of the proposed relay engine and compared them with the performance of the existing relay engine.

Resource reservation scheme is an effective method to guarantee QoS for handoff calls in the next generation multimedia mobile communication systems, but it causes negative impacts on blocking probability of new calls. In this paper, to optimize the tradeoff between dropping probability of handoff calls and blocking probability of new calls, relay station based handoff prioritization control algorithm is proposed. In this algorithm, the relay station participates in handoff procedure and enables mobile stations to have guaranteed prompt service after handoff by providing highly efficient data transmission. In this paper, Markov chain models of the proposed handoff prioritization schemes are developed, and dropping probability of handoff packets and blocking probability of new packets are derived. By numerical analysis, the proposed algorithm has been proved to outperform conventional handoff prioritization schemes in terms of dropping probability of handoff packets and blocking Probability of new packets.
