Menu Layout for Touch-screen Phones Based on Various Grip Postures (다양한 파지 방법에 따른 터치스크린 폰 메뉴 레이아웃에 관한 연구)

  • The level of competition has reached the limits in cellular phone market and the cellular phone manufacture companies started to focus their solution in user interface. Design issues with controllability led the development and renovation of such products to the use of the touch-screen phone. Depending upon the readability, technical advances, portability and controllability, user satisfaction of touch-screen phones could vary significantly. In this research, the controllability was dealt in regard to various grip postures, in order to improve menu layout which fits for using the thumbs of both hands and a thumbs of single hand. Regression models are found to the suggest the location of buttons on the screen by redesigning the menu layout, it is expected to improve both controllability and satisfaction of the user. This result can be applicable not only to mobile phone design, but also to the design of various hand-held devices using a touch screen.

A Design of Mobile e-Book Viewer interface for the Reading Disabled People (독서장애인용 모바일 전자책뷰어 인터페이스 설계)

  • As the eBook market grows fast recently, various eBook viewer solutions such as hardware viewers and software readers came out to the market. We can, however, hardly find mobile eBook interfaces for the reading disabled people who have difficulties in reading for their visual impairment or learning disabilities, or dyslexia. An eBook viewer interfaces for the reading disabled people should be carefully and distinctively designed because the reading disabled people cannot use normal versions of eBook viewer. In this paper, we suggest a eBook viewer interface model to make the reading disabled people read eBooks easily. Depending on the type of the reading disabled people: the full blind, the almost blind, the just learning disabled, our model provides an adaptive interface to make them read eBooks effectively. In addition, unlike the existing simple audio books, we also support annotation systems to make the reading disabled people interact with eBook viewer. To show the effectiveness of our model, we implemented an eBook viewer prototype on an android-based mobile device. We are sure that our model and implementation can make the reading disabled people, who is 10% of all the domestic people, read eBooks effectively.

A comparative study on user interface experience, product attitudes and intention to repurchase for each smartphone manufacturer (스마트폰 제조사별 UI(User Interface)경험과 제품태도 및 재구매의도에 관한 비교 연구)

  • This study aimed to identify empirically the differences of user interface experience factors for such manufacturers as Samsung, LG, Sky, Apple, etc., which are fiercely competing in the mobile market at home and abroad. In addition, this study aimed to verify how different the impact of such user interface experience factors on product attitudes and intention to repurchase would be for each manufacturer. As a result of the study, it was verified that there was a difference in the user experience between the manufacturers for all of the factors forming user satisfaction experience, which included information, interaction, useful experience and design experience satisfaction. Second, it was also verified that there was a difference between the manufacturers in terms of product attitudes. Lastly, it was verified that there was a difference between the manufacturers in terms of intention to repurchase. Specifically, it was found that Samsung had a higher degree of intention to repurchase than LG and Sky, whereas Apple had a higher degree hereof then Samsung. It is expected that the above results of study will provide the aforementioned manufacturers useful implications for establishing UI strategies through the contemplation of differences for each manufacturer in addition to the expansion of studies related to UI experience.

  • A Widget platform is acknowledged to be a next generation intelligent platform that is well suited to Web 2.0 and mobile convergence environments. With prospects of growth, examining users' perceptions of current widgets can be a valuable source of information in setting directions for Widget's future development. This study identifies user interface factors that affect widget usability and investigates a strategic approach to promoting the use of widgets by analyzing user's "intention to use" in connection with the identified interface factors. The experimental results show the consistency, intuition, minimal action, and personalization have a positive(+) effect on perceived ease of use and that personalization and design have a causal effect on perceived enjoyment. Inaddition, perceived ease of use has an influence on perceived enjoyment that, inturn, has a direct influence on intention to use. On the other hand, the hypothesis that perceived ease of use has a direct effect on intention to use was rejected.

  • In mobile content services like apps for smart mobile devices in specific, there has been a growing interest in evaluating UX quality to make sure that it provides better experience to users and consequently, secures competitiveness in a market. In that sense, usability testing has been considered as one method that enables designers and design managers to evaluate UI quality before they launch their service. However, those designers have been faced with a following fundamental question to be answere d : Is good UX design a good business? In other words, can well-designed service, which has good usability, actually satisfy target users and improve competitiveness in a market? There is no doubt that usability is one important factor perceived by users. However, it has a limit in terms of evaluating UX quality in macro level, as it mostly focuses on ease of use and efficiency of performing tasks, but does not cover other possible experiential factors, which also can be perceived by users, such as market situation and preexistence experience. Therefore, this research aims to identify key experiential factors in using mobile content services, and establish service UX index model that enables to measure perceived user satisfaction, and identify how UX design contributes to the satisfaction in quantitative way.

  • Ad-hoc network is a collection of wireless mobile hosts forming a temporary network without the aid of any centralized administration or reliable support services such as wired network and base stations. Recently, Ad-hoc networks are evolving to support multimedia contents according to expansion of ad hoc multi-hop communication system. Wireless ad-hoc network is different from the conventional wired network by frequent changes in network topology, number of routers and resources, there are a number of problems in applying conventional routing protocol to ad-hoc network. The AODV routing protocol is proposed for mobile node in ad-hoc networks. AODV protocol that provides to guarantee QoS for data transmission in ad hoc networks that link break frequently occurs. In this paper, AODV routing protocol based NDIS(Network Driver Interface Specification) is implemented. We design high performance image transmission that can operate with software(AODV) for ad-hoc networks without degradation. and verify operation of AODV routing protocol on the test bed.

  • Recently, to accelerate the Ubiquitous generation, the input interface of the mobile machinery and tools are actively being researched. In addition with the existing interfaces such as the keyboard and curser (mouse), other subdivisions including the handwriting, voice, vision, and touch are under research for new interfaces. Especially in the case of small-sized mobile machinery and tools, there is a increasing need for an efficient input interface despite the small screens. This is because, additional installment of other devices are strictly limited due to its size. Previous studies on handwriting recognition have generally been based on either two-dimensional images or algorithms which identify handwritten data inserted through vectors. Futhermore, previous studies have only focused on how to enhance the accuracy of the handwriting recognition algorithms. However, a problem arisen is that when an actual handwriting is inserted, the user must select the classification of their characters (e.g Upper or lower case English, Hangul - Korean alphabet, numbers). To solve the given problem, the current study presents a system which distinguishes different languages by analyzing the form/shape of inserted handwritten characters. The proposed technique has treated the handwritten data as sets of vector units. By analyzing the correlation and directivity of each vector units, a more efficient language distinguishing system has been made possible.

  • In this work, a mathematical modeling of SAW coupled mode in SAW resonator filter, which is very useful in analyzing the characteristics of periodic electrode structure such as SAW reflective array and inter-digital transducers. was considered by mathematical analytic approach. The design and simulation method for resonator filter was also proposed by equivalent transduction matrix using this mathematical modeling. In order for a designer to simulate, and to design the coupled mode SAW resonator filters effectively that could be applied to mobile communication system, a design simulator for coupled mode filter was implemented by graphic user interface, and it was investigated by designing and analyzing practical SAW coupled mode resonator filter from a view point of application of this simulator.

  • Currently, ITS (Intelligent Transport System) system is supporting a variety of services to be enhanced traffic's efficiency and driver's safety as developing of information communications and network technology. High data transfer communications such as Wibro, HSPA and WAVE are used for providing ITS services, but there are some differences from specification and performance applied. So, users who are employing the communication systems to transfer data whatever they want to have been suffering from use. In this paper, it is proposed that user can use various high data transfer communication systems wherever environments they are in using adaptation of system change. Also, it is implemented performance of system which uses alternate communication scheme in mobile terminal based on embedded platform.

  • In this paper, a telematics service platform, which supports the management and diagnosis of automobile and controls the automobile's convenience equipment is designed and implemented. Using the service platform, telematics software can be developed independent of the lower part of automobiles's network devices, each hardware devices, and wireless network devices. The platform classifies each device's service and provides it with the fixed form of API(Application Programming Interface). This API consists of the wireless connection for a mobile device, the CAN network for controlling an automobile, the receiving part of GPS data for location base service, and the message parser for different data formats of different network.
