  • In this study, in order to increase piezoelectric properties of the low temperature sintering ceramics for multilayer piezoelectric transformer, PCW-PMN-PZT ceramics added with $Li_2CO_3$, $Bi_2O_3$ and CuO as sintering aids were manufactured according to the amount of $MnO_2$ addition, and their microstructural, dielectric and piezoelectric properties were investigated. When the sintering aids was added, specimens could be sintered at $950^{\circ}C$. However, sintering aids added specimens showed lower piezoelectric properties than those of non-added specimens. $0.1wt%MnO_2$ added specimen at $950^{\circ}C$ showed ${\varepsilon}_r$, of 1503, $k_p$ of 0.57 and $Q_m$ of 1502 were shown, respectively, and showed optimum properties for multilayer piezoelectric transformer.

  • Among dusts which were generated in AOD process producing a medium-low carbon ferromanganese, the dust collected in bag filter contained manganese about 63% and its phase was $Mn_3$$O_4$. the maximum extraction of Mn by nitric acid is about 67% because of remaining amorphous $MnO_2$. Therefore this research investigated reducibility of the activated charcoal in Mn extraction from the dust. Addition of charcoal over 10% of pulp density made possible Mn extraction of 90% at $70^{\circ}C$, 0.5N $HNO_3$. To convert $Mn_3$$O_4$ to MnO by reducing roasting, the minimum mixture ratio of activated charcoal was 5% in $750^{\circ}C$, 1 hour. Extraction of Mn from the reduced dust was over 99% with nitric acid at $25^{\circ}C$, 6N $HNO_3$, pulp density 150 g/l§.

  • The objective of this study was to assess the catalytic activities of manganese oxide (MnO, $MnO_2$, $Mn_2O_3$, and $Mn_3O_4$) catalysts for odors (acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde) removal. We used a fixed bed reactor as the experimental apparatus and the catalytic performance were carried out over the temperature range of $200{\sim}470^{\circ}C$. The properties and performance of catalysts were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET). The catalytic activities of manganese oxide catalysts for acetaldehyde combustion were in the order of MnO < $MnO_2$ < $Mn_2O_3$ < $Mn_3O_4$, and it is similar to that of propionaldehyde combustion. We also confirmed that the reactions have well followed the kinetic model of Power-Rate Law and the reaction order (n) is 1 for both of the acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde combustion. In addition, the reaction activation energy of acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde combustion over $Mn_3O_4$ were found to be $72.42\;kJmol^{-1}$ for 487~503 K and $51.14\;kJmol^{-1}$ for 473~533 K, respectively.

  • The effect of the addition of Cu on the catalytic activity of the $Mn/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ catalyst for the low-temperature SCR reaction of NO was investigated. Three different amounts of Cu, 5, 10, and 15 wt%, were impregnated on the $Mn/CeO_2-ZrO_2$ catalyst. The characteristics of the synthesized catalysts were examined by BET, XRD, XPS, and $H_2-TPR$ analyses. The de-NOx efficiency of the Cu-added catalysts increased with the amount of Cu. When 15 wt% Cu was impregnated, the deNOx efficiency was the highest, reaching as high as 99%. The increased deNOx efficiency is attributed to the enhanced reducing power stemming from the interaction between Mn and Cu on the catalyst surface.

  • In order to investigate the effect of Mn on the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of PMN-PT [$Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3$], four different types of 71PMN-29PT samples were prepared using the solid-state single crystal growth (SSCG) method: (1) Undoped single crystals, (2) undoped polycrystalline ceramics, (3) Mn-doped single crystals, and (4) Mn-doped polycrystalline ceramics. In the case of single crystals, the addition of 0.5 mol% Mn to PMN-PT decreased the dielectric constant ($K_3{^T}$), piezoelectric charge constant ($d_{33}$), and dielectric loss (tan ${\delta}$) by about 50%, but increased the coercive electric field ($E_C$) by 50% and the electromechanical quality factor ($Q_m$) by 500%, respectively. The addition of Mn to PMN-PT induced an internal bias electric field ($E_I$) and thus specimens changed from piezoelectrically soft-type to piezoelectrically hard-type. This Mn effect was more significant in single crystals than in ceramics. These results demonstrate that Mn-doped 71PMN-29PT single crystals, because they are piezoelectrically hard and simultaneously have high piezoelectric and electromechanical properties, have great potential for application in fields of SONAR transducers, high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), and ultrasonic motors.

  • In this study, the application of recovered metals from spent batteries by extraction was investigated for ozone decomposition as a catalyst. Among the recovered metals, Mn contents was the most important factor for ozone decomposition. It was also found that the deactivation rate of the catalyst was dependent on the Zn contents, while K contents and activities were not perfectly correlated for ozone decomposition. In addition, the catalytic activity the $TiO_2$ added catalyst was decreased, due to the reduction of Mn contents. The structural characteristics of maganase oxide was not associated with the catalytic activity for ozone decomposition.

  • The effect of aliovalent dopants, $ Nb_2O_5$ and MnO, on the phase stability of 12 mol% ceria partially-stabilized zirconia (Ce-TZP) polycrystals was studied. Both dopants (MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$) significantly increased the stability of the tetragonal zirconia phase (Mb temperature lower than liquid nitrogen temperature). The enhancement of the stability of the tetragonal phase in Ce-TZP doped with 1 mol% of Mno(Ce-TZP/MnO) andCe-TZP doped with 1 mol% of $ Nb_2O_5$(Ce-TZP/$ Nb_2O_5$) were explained by the significant reduction of the driving force, -${\Delta}$Gchem, for the tetragonal-to-mono-clinic phase transformation caused by the addition of MnO and $ Nb_2O_5$. The enhanced stability of the tetragonal phase in the Ce-TZP and Al2O3 composite (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$) is believed to be caused by smaller grain size, moderate reduction in the chemical driving force and increase in the strain energy barrier to the transformation. Mechanical properties of the Ce-TZP and the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ with (i) the same grain size and (ii) the same Mb temperature were examined by measuring stress-strain behavior in 3 point bending. The Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite doped with 1.3w% MnO (Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO), which had the same grain size as the Ce-TZP and De-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ showed more transformation plasticity than either the Ce-TZP or the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$ composite. The Ce-TZP wihch had the same Mb temperature as that of the Ce-TZP/$Al_2O_3$/MnO did not show any transformation plasticity.
