  • The present study is developed device that effectively mixes raw water and chemicals by using the residual head of fluid in the front pipe of flocculation basin, and performed non-dimensional analysis and presented design standard to apply to water plants that have different equipment capacity. The variables for design are a proper ratio between an outer diameter of deflector and a diameter of pipe, a distance between deflector and orifice and a determination of orifice diameter for an optimal mixing. Numerical study has analyzed flow field on a basis of turbulent intensity in an orifice downstream. As Reynolds number of In-Line Orifice was increased from identical design variable, the turbulent intensity of pipe center was no changed almost.

  • A numerical study has been peformed to investigate the flow and mixing characteristics of a chemical injection tank in the chemical and volume control system (CVCS) of Yonggwang 5&6 (YGN 5&6). This study was undertaken to provide a basis for modification of the previous design (YGN 3&4) which gave a lot of difficulties in installation and operation of the chemical injection system during the start-up test because it needs a special reciprocating pump with a high actual head. For the tank of length-to-diameter ratios (L/D) of 1,2 and 3, each with and without a baffle inside, calculation results were obtained by solving the unsteady laminar two-dimensional elliptic forms of governing equations for the mass, momentum and species concentration. Finite-difference method was used to obtain discretized equations, and the SIMPLER solution algorithm, which was developed based on the staggered grid control volume, was employed for the calculation procedure. Results showed that the baffle is very effective in enhancing the mixing in the tank and that a baffle should be installed near the tank entrance in order to 110 chemicals into the reactor coolant system (RCS) within the operating time required.

  • Concentration fields of solid powder in a liquid fuel were quantitatively measured by a visualization technique. The measurement system consists of a camcoder and three LCD monitors. The solid powder (glass powder) were filled in a head tank which was installed over a main mixing tank ($D{\times}H$, $310{\times}370mm$). The main mixing tank was filled with JetA1 fuel oil. With a sudden opening of the upper tank by pressurized nitrogen gas with 1.9 bar, the solid powder were poured into the JetA1 oil. An impeller type agitator was being rotated in the mixing with 700 rpm for the enhancements of mixing. Uniform visualization for the mixing flow field was made by the light from the three LCD monitors, and the visualized images were captured by the camcoder. The color images captured by the camcoder The color information of the captured images was decoded into three principle colors R, G, and B to get quantitattive relations between the concentrations of the solid powder and the colors. To get better fitting for the strong non-linearity between the concentration and the color, a neural network which has strong fitting performances was used. Analyses on the transient mixing of the solid powders were quantitatively made.

  • We have developed a 2D axi-symmetric numerical model for an inductively coupled plasma system in order to analyze gas mixing effect through a narrow gap shower head. For frictional flow, holes of 0.5 mm diameter and 2 mm length are approximately modeled in 2D. Gas velocity distribution 10 mm below the shower head showed 2 times difference between the center and the edge at 10 mTorr. At 10 mm above the wafer, it was increased to 6 times difference due to the pumping duct effect. The model with a 5 mm height buffer region of a shower head showed reasonable behavior of Ar discharge. The density of Ar metastable showed additional peak inside the buffer region around the edge holes.

  • The hydraulic performance analysis of a pump system composed of an inducer and impeller for the application on turbopumps has been performed using three-dimensional Wavier-Stokes equations. A simple mixing-plane method and a full interaction method are used to simulate inducer/impeller interactions. The computations adopting two methods show almost similar results due to the weak interaction between the inducer and impeller since the inducer outlet blade angle is rather small. But, because the inducer and the impeller are closely spaced near the shroud region at the interface, flow angles at the impeller inlet show different results between two methods. Thus, the full interaction method predicted about $2\%$ higher pump performance than the mixing-plane method. And the effects of prewhirl at the impeller inlet are also investigated. As the inlet flow angle is increased, the head rise and the efficiency are decreased. The computational results are compared with experimental ones. The computational results at the design point show good agreements with experimental data. But the computation was found to under-predict the head rise at high mass flow rates compared to the experiment, further study must be followed in terms of the computation and experiment.

  • Technology demonstration models(TDM) of a 75-$ton_f$ liquid rocket engine(LRE) thrust chamber were manufactured on the basis of development technologies of 30-$ton_f$ LRE. It was confirmed that some machining and welding technologies which were aimed to be verified through the manufacturing of demonstration models could be applied to the thrust chamber 75-$ton_f$-class. New designed mixing head part was manufactured by means of new process. The manufacturing process and technologies established through TDM's will improve the reliability of manufacturing process of large LRE thrust chamber.

  • The small-sized bi-propellant thruster using a high concentrated hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as the oxidizer and fuel was designed and fabricated in this study. The water cold-flow test was performed to verify the performance characteristics of the injector. The mixing head assembly used in this model thruster was designed as a structure to combine igniter, injectors and film cooling, which are capable of regulating each mass flowrate. This maximize the experimental verification and efficiency of the design optimization. Finally, the mass flowrate and spray pattern of injector were evaluated by the hydraulic test. Therefore, the design validity of the mixing head was verified.
