  • The new energy-based criterion, named Reinforcement Strain Energy Density (ReiSED), is proposed to investigate the fracture behavior of the cracked orthotropic materials in which the crack is embedded in the matrix along the fibers. ReiSED is an extension of the well-known minimum strain energy density criterion. The concept of the reinforced isotropic solid as an advantageous model is the basis of the proposed mixed-mode I/II criterion. This model introduces fibers as reinforcements of the isotropic matrix in orthotropic materials. The effects of fibers are qualified by defining reinforcement coefficients at tension and shear modes. These coefficients, called Reduced Stress (ReSt), provide the possibility of encompassing the fiber fraction in a fracture criterion for the first time. Comparing ReiSED fracture limit curve with experimental data proves the high efficiency of this criterion to predict the fracture behavior of orthotropic materials.

  • Theoretical fringe patterns were calculated and regenerated by using power series type Williams equations and coefficients estimated from the photoelastic data. Results of calculated values were evaluated by comparing experimental data points with the regenerated theoretical fringe loops. Statistical accuracy evaluation between regenerated fringe values and experimental ones showed that standard deviation was minimum and correlation coefficient was maximum when the first four terms of Wiliams equations were used.

  • Under the mixed mode loading, it has been known that the influence of non-singular terms in the stress fields is serious, because the critical distance, ${\gamma}_o$ - the distance of nonlinear elastic region near the crack tip has no negligible value. In this paper, it has been studied on the influence of non-singular terms, T-stress, and the case of T=0, ${\sigma}cos^2{\beta}$, ${\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$ and $0.05{\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$, under uniaxial tension and compression. It has been seen that the T-stress of ${\sigma}cos(2{\beta})$ has better than others as comparing to the experimental data.

  • Sihs minimum strain energy density criterion(SED) often used in the mixed mode problem has the ambiguity of the choice of minimum values. In this paper, as the method to solve the problem of SED, maximum minimum strain energy density criterion is proposed that the crack propagates in the direction of having the maximum among the minimum values of modified strain energy density factor(MS), i.e., sign($\sigma$(sub)$\theta$).Smin.

  • The reliable determination of the stress intensity factors for cracks in bolted Joints is needed to evaluate the safety and fatigue life of them widely used in mechanical components. The weight function method is an efficient technique to calculate the stress intensity factors for various loading conditions using the stresses of an uncracked model. In this paper the mixed-mode stress intensity factors for cracks in bolted joints are obtained by weight function method, in which the coefficients of weight function are determined by finite element analyses far reference loadings. The effects of the magnitude of clearance and factional coefficient on the stress intensity factors are investigated.

  • Application of bonded dissimilar materials in various industries are increasing. When these materials are used in structures, it needs to investigate strength evaluation applying fracture mechanics. Al/Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials with an interface crack and an interface crack emanating from an edge semicircular hole were prepared for the static tests so that experiment of fracture toughness were carried out. Stress intensity factors of interface cracks in bonded dissimilar materials were computed with boundary element method(BEM) and the fracture criteria of mixed mode crack were analyzed. From the results, the fracture criteria and the method of strength evaluation by the fracture toughness in Al/ Epoxy bonded dissimilar materials were proposed.

  • The effects of dissolved oxy-gen(DO) concentration and DO control modes on cell growth in a 4L computer-controlled bioreactor system were investigated using Phellinus linteus WI-001, a producer of protein-polysaccharides having potent anticancer activi-ties. When DO was controlled at about 20%, maximum cell concentration and specific growth rate of the strain were observed to increase 36% and 64%, respectively, as compared to the experiment performed without DO control. By adopting cascade automatic control of DO ar 20% in a mixed automatic control mode using computer-con-trolled program, 19.5g/L of maximum cell concentration was obtained. These results showed that the mixed auto-matic control mode was the effective method for enhancing cell growth of the shear sensitive Phellinus linteus.

  • HTS superconducting tapes are now commercially available for practical applications such as magnets and cables. Since superconductors in such applications are subjected to high mechanical loads that can significantly degrade the superconducting properties, mechanical properties and the strain tolerance known as the strain effect on superconducting properties are needed to be estimated for developing superconducting devices. Influences of loading mode on the Ic degradation and the interaction on strain effect were discussed in this study.

  • Applications of bonded dissimilar materials such as metal/ceramics and resin/metal joints, are very increasing in various industry fields. It is required to find crack propagation direction and path applying to the fracture mechanics on the bonded joint of dissimilar meterials. In this paper, crack propagation direction and path were simulated numerically by using boundary element method. Crack propagation angle is able to easily determine based on the maximum stress concept. Fracture tests of Al/Epoxy dissimilar materials with an interface crack are carried out under various mixed mode conditions by using the specimens of bonded scarf joints. It is found that the experimental results are well coincide with the analysis results of boundary element method.

  • This paper proposes a prediction model of air traffic controller's take-off clearance under mixed mode runway operations. The proposed model has its purpose on the better prediction of the air traffic controller's clearance on take-offs of departure aircraft by considering various factors. For this purpose, support vector machine classification algorithm is used for the proposed model. The proposed model is applied to real air traffic operations to demonstrate its performances.
