Objectives: The pollution status of heavy metals within the soil was investigated with an aim to establishing a sustainable soil environment within parks and amusement facilities installed in urban areas of Gyeonggi-do Province. Methods: As sampling sites, 14 locations were selected from a city with a number of factories near a residential area, a residential area, and a children's park in a city with mixed green areas. Seven kinds of heavy metals, including Cd, Pb, and Hg, and the pH of soil were analyzed three times by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). Results: In this study, the pH of the samples from the residential park and industrial park showed 5.7-6.5 and 5.9-7.0, respectively. The overall mean concentration (mg/kg) of heavy metals was Zn (132.8), Ni (73.0), Cu (47.4), Pb (35.9), As (4.84), Cd (0.39), and Hg (0.07), indicating that these concentrations of heavy metals were lower than those for the area 1 standard of soil pollution concern criteria. In addition, the sampling sites in the residential area and the industrial area also showed the same tendency for concentration distribution. Conclusions: We found that the soil pollution class (SPC) of some spots were over 200, which are third and fourth classes. In order to manage a sustainable soil environment in a city park, it is suggested that local governments, the management bodies for these parks, need to manage, supervise, and investigate soil pollution and quickly replace contaminated soil.

This study was carried out development a new composting system to lower copper and zinc concentration in plg sludge compost and conduct an inquiry into the possibility of crop cultivation. The concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and pH averaged 4.4%, 6.3% and 7.57, respectively, which were higher concentrations than in commercial organic fertilizers, and the concentrations of copper and zinc averaged 805 and 1,704 mg/kg, respectively, which were beyond the heavy metal concentration limit in byproduct compost. Hydrated citric acid I lowered the concentrations of copper and zinc by 58% and 97%, respectively and hydrated oxalic acid II lowered the concentrations of copper and zinc by 48% and 56%, respectively in pig sludge compost. Lower concentrations of copper and zinc in pig sludge resulted from the enhanced hydrated-citric acid concentration in organic acid solution mixed with distilled water. The concentrations of copper and zinc were 330, and 41 mg/kg in the pig sludge treated with 100% hydrated citric acid. Agitation composting system stabilized the compost earlier than the stationary composting system, in which the stabilization condition was confirmed by higher temperature by $4^{\circ}C$ at highest temperature and 7 days earlier cooling down after highest temperature. The levels of germination index (G.I) 80 were obtained 15 and 20 days after composting in agitation and stationary composting system, respectively. The concentrations of copper and zinc were 2.4 and 4.26 mg/kg respectively in soils amended with pig sludge compost after removing process of heavy metals by citric acid, but 8.0 and 22.37 mg/kg, respectively in soils amended with Pig Sludge. The concentrations of heavy metals was highest in com cultivated in soils amended with pig sludge. The copper and zinc concentrations In corn leaves were 75.2 and 50.56 mg/kg respectively, which were 4 and 2 fold higher than the com cultivated in soils amended with pig sludge compost after heavy metal removing process by hydrated citric acid.
The metals contamination of farmland soil nearby abandoned metal mine was serious problem in Korea. Stabilization of contaminated soil was reported using various stabilizers. Application of limestone and steel refining slag was reported as effective stabilizers in the stabilization of metals. The batch studies confirmed that the mixture of limestone and steel refining slag was suitable for stabilization of metals in contaminated soil. The limestone and steel refining slag mixture (2 : 1 and 3 : 2) were used in column studies and it was confirmed that the stabilizers effectively stabilized heavy metals in contaminated soil. The pH of the soil was increased with the addition of stabilizers. Total leached concentration of metals from the column study was reduced 44, 17, and 93% in comparison to the control at arsenic, cadmium and copper, respectively. The sequential extraction studies showed that the exchangeable fraction was changed into carbonate bound fraction (Cd and Cu) and Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction (As). Based on the results we confirmed that 2:1 ratio of limestone and steel refining slag effectively stabilizes the heavy metals. The mixed treatment of lime stone with steel refining slag would be an effective and feasible method for controlling metals leaching in contaminated soil.
To utilize coastal aquaculture ground bottom sediment in which concentrations of harmful pollutants are low and organic content is high as an organic fertilizer alkaline stabilizers such as CaO, Oyster shell, Mg(OH)$_2$ were added to the bottom sediment organic additives of livestock or food wastes. Nutritive qualities of crude fertilizers were measured to examine effects of alkaline stabilizers and organic waste additions. The Mg(OH)$_2$-added crude fertilizer had significantly lower total carbon(T-C) and nitrogen(T-N) content, reflecting the dilution effect due to great amount of Mg(OH)$_2$ addition. However, the addition of oyster shell had no significant effect on the T-C and T-N content of the fertilizer. $P_2O_5$ and $K_2$O content was considerably higher in the mixed sample of aquaculture ground bottom sediments and livestock wastes than in the mixture of the sediments and food wastes, resulting from higher $P_2O_5$ and $K_2$O content in livestock wastes. Addition of Mg(OH)$_2$ increased the content of MgO In the crude fertilizer but significantly reduced the content of other nutritive elements such as $P_2O_5$, $K_2$O and CaO. Addition of oyster shell as an alkaline stabilizer seemed to have the advantage of saving time and expenses far dryness due to its role as a modulator of water content. Moreover, additions of effect Mg(OH)$_2$ decreased the concentrations of heavy metals in the fertilizer by the dilution while additions of oyster shell had no influence on heavy metal concentrations in the fertilizer.
An alternative method to remove and recover heavy metals is biosorption based on metal-sequestering properties of natural or biological origin. In this study, the effects of factors such as temperature, pH, initial concentration of lead, and initial amount of biomass on biosorption of lead using Aureobasdium pullulans were investigated. A. pullulans has an excellent selectivity to remove lead than other heavy metals such as cadmium, chromium, nickel in pure and mixed solution. The optimum temperature of biosorption with A. pullulans was $40^{\circ}C$ and the amount of removal increased at high pH. The higher initial lead concentration or the lower cell dry weight, the higher amount of lead was adsorbed. The adsorption isotherm of lead was accorded with Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity and initial adsorption rate of living A. pullulans were about twice higher than that of dead one.
This study is conducted in order to find more improved solidifying effects than the former converter slag solidification technology. The converter slag is used as a solidifying agent, and the quick lime and the gypsum are used as solidifying aids. Several tests are performed for the purpose of investigating the solidifying effects and the applicability of the solidified sludge as a daily or intermediate landfill cover. The unconfined uniaxial compressive strength, pH and leaching of heavy metal are investigated. In the case of using both quick lime and gypsum as solidifying aids, the compressive strength of specimen has significantly increased that of specimen which used quick lime only. The compressive strength of each specimen cured for 7 days which is mixed with quick lime and gypsum as mixing ratios 7:1, 5:1 and 3:1 are $0.59kg/cm^2$, $1.18kg/cm^2$, and $1.25kg/cm^2$, respectively. The results of all the leaching tests of specimen cured for 7 days show that the concentrations of leachate heavy metals(Cu, Pb, Cd and $Cr^{6+}$) are lower than the Korea toxic waste criteria. The microstructure analysis by SEM shows that needlelike crystals appear as the solidification proceed. The analysis of these crystals by EDS confirms that these main components are Ca. Si etc. Also, XRD analysis shows that the main solidification products are CSH and Ettringite; in addition, $Ca(OH)_2$ CAH are observed. When the added gypsum is used as a solidifying aid, more improved solidifying effects are obtained and the solidified sludge may be appropriately used as a daily or intermediate landfill cover.
This study was investigated to characterize the stormwater runoff pollutant materials from the urban area mixed with industrial area. Almost the similar rainfall pattern is shown during the 5 years, and the yearly precipitation was 5.2~6.6 mm. The first flushing effect during the early-stage rainfall-run off was observed in some events. EMC ranges are 19.3~39.9 mg/L for BOD, 45.2~190 mg/L for CODcr, 67.2~351 mg/L for TSS, 3.6~10.3 mg/L for TN, 1.2~2.5 mg/L for TP. Heavy metal are not detected except Zn which is observed at only one event. The particle size was distributed to 10 ${\mu}m$ at the 3% weight volume and the 50% cumulative weight percent was shown at 12 ${\mu}m$.
size data of 1,044 surface sediments from Korean shelf area were compiled and reexamined. Size distribution curves of the sediments are unimodal (31% of the total number), bimodal (54%), or multimodal 915%), Size curves of the sediments and modal subpopulations of the mixed sediments show resemblance to normal curve in shape. The modal mean value shows systematic change along a direction inside the Recent mud belts of the southeastern Yellow Sea and west of Korea Strait. It was found that the areas covered by unimodal sand are minimal value areas of heavy metal and suspended sediment-concentration in the southeastern Yellow Sea and northern East China transport processes during Recent time. It was also found that the mode analysis is useful method to extract information from sediment size data.
The coal fly ash (CFA) may be utilized as an extender for organic waste composting at the same time fully expected to solve all industrial waste disposal and sawdust tribe. The main objective in this study was to evaluate the effect of CFA addition as a bulking agent for swine manure composting. To determine the suitable addition rate of CFA as a bulking agent, 0, 10, 20 and 30% of saw dust were mixed with 30, 20, 10 and 0% of coal fly ash, respectively. Compost quality for swine manure composting was to evaluate temperature, pH, C/N ratio, and phytotoxicity as germination index. Stability of compost increased with increasing levels of CFA as bulking agent during swine manure composting due to the high alkaline materials including CFA. C to N ratio in treatment added CFA was higher than that of the control without CFA. After finishing composting, germination index of lettuce and cabbage in swine manure compost added 10% of CFA was similar to the control, all the heavy metal contents were far below the stipulated standard for organic farming. These results indicated tahr coal fly ash as bulking agents might be alternative materials to save saw dust and apply industrial products for swine manure composting.
Bunker C is used in heavy-lift ships, furnaces, and boilers for generating heat, and power. Bunker C has only four regulations for quality standards and is rarely inspected in Korea. For these reasons, other oils such as used lubricant oil are commonly blended with Bunker C. This illegal mixture of fuel can damage the boilers, engines and affect the environment adversely. In this study, we investigate the fuel properties and perform atomic analysis of illegal Bunker C blended with used lube oil. The test results show that higher quantities of used lube oil in Bunker C have higher flash points, total acid numbers, copper corruption, solid contamination, and metal components. Further, increasing quantities of used lube oil in Bunker C cause lower viscosity, sulfur, and V content. However, adequate sample (approximately 1 L) is needed to evaluate presence of adulterants in Bunker C, we attempted the SIMDIST analysis. In the SIMDIST chromatogram, the used engine oils are detected for longer retention times than Bunker C owing to the high boiling point. We also quantitatively analyzed the lube oil content using SIMDIST.
