The well preserved ostracodes of the Chunbuk Formation in Pohang Basin were analyzed isotopically to understand paleoceanographic conditions of the southeastern park of Korean peninsula which Songhacdong, and Mulcheonri areas range from - 2.2 to - 0.7% (PDB), - 0.7 to 0.0% , and -20.0 to - 0.8%, and their corresponding paleotemperatures range from ca 20 to 27$^{\circ}C$ (average = 24$^{\circ}C$), 17 to 20$^{\circ}C$ (average = 18$^{\circ}C$), and 20 to 26$^{\circ}C$ (average=23$^{\circ}C$),respectively. Assuming the $\delta$/SUP 18/O composition of the Middle Miocene seawater was about - 0.34% (SMOW), the paleotemperatures of the Middle Miocene shallow seawater in the Pohang Basin was almost equal to or slightly higher than the present summer temperature (ca 16 to 20$^{\circ}C$) near Pohang area. Carbon isotopic value of Cyhere omotenipponica is - 0.8% (PDB), reflecting marine carbonate carbon composition. Carbon isotopic compositions of other ostracodes such as Aurial okumurai, Trachyleberis niitsmai, Urocythereis sp., Urocythereis cf. gorokuensis, and Acanthocythereis mutsuensis range from - 5.2 to - 3.4% (PDB), which might have secreted their shells out of equilibrium with ambient seawater. This disequilibrium was most likely to have resulted from metabolic (=vital) effect, rather than temperature of productivity.
Of more than 30 varieties of zeolite group minerals, 7 varieties, mordenite, clinoptilolite, natrolite laumontite, stilbite, stellerite and chabazite are identified in Korea, whereas mordenite and clinoptilolite occur in Miocene sediments of small Yonil tertiary basin, east coast of Korea. The basin consists of three separate groups of sediments called Janggi, Gampo and Haseo, which are not correlated stratigraphyically yet. Zeolite occurs alternating with montmorillonite layers in Nuldaeri, Yongdongri and Haseori tuffs of Jahanggi, Gampo and Haseo Groups respectively. Zeolite was formed by diagenesis. of acidic volcanic tuffs.
Southwest Hokkaido (Sapporo-Iwanai district) in the Northeast Japan arc (Fig. 1) is one of the best places to test the correlation among tectonic regime, stress field, magmatic style and hydrothermal mineralization. This paper reviews the Miocene to Pleistocene tectonic framework, geology, magmatic style and stress field of southwest Hokkaido, and correlates them with different types of deposits (Kuroko, epithermal base-metal and precious-metal). A paleobotanical study of the fossil woods has been carried out from the Tertiary Janggi Group, Pohang Basin. Three species belonging to three genera of Ulmus sp., Prunus sp., and Acer sp. were identified from the Lower Coalbearing Formation, and two species of two genera of Taxodioxylon sp. and Fagus hondoensis (Watari) from the Upper Coal-bearing Formation. As our specimens are mostly poorly preserved, it is difficult to give clear specific names, but mostly are all characteristic constitutional elements of the Miocene fossil woods in Korea. The values of mean sensitivity measured from the fossil woods of Lower and Upper Coal-bearing Formations are 0.367 and 0.370 respectively, but they are more than 0.30. Based on the present two data mentioned above, it stands to reason that there were many changes in the water supply to the roots of the woods or having influence to some degree each year because of the seasonal changes in rainfall.
A maximum of 3 km thickness of sediments were deposited above basement deformed by volcanic activities around the Dok Island. As the geological structure, the tension caused the basement-involved normal faults in the early stage of basin formation, whereas the sediment layers showed normal faults, volcanic domes and sills caused by volcanic activities. From the distribution of volcanics in order of age at the Ulleung Basin, volcanic activities were increased toward the northeastern direction (toward Dok Island). The study area is characterized by extensional crustal deformation before sediment deposition during the Early or Middle Miocene age, After the Late Miocene age, the basin was deformed by deep buried volcanics or subsidence of basin, in consequence, became complex geological structures.
Four entities of the Cenozoic fish fossils were discovered in the Miocene Duho Formation, Pohang, Korea. these fossils were identified as the first Pleuronectiformes in Korea based on the following-the presence of postcleithrum, the elongation of the first proximal pterygiophore of the anal fin ray, almost consistent presence of two proximal pterygiophore of the anal fin rays between the two adjacent hemal spines, the fusion of the first and second hypurals, the fusion of the third and fourth hypurals and the first preural centrum, the presence of well-developed anteriormost plate-like neural spine, the presence of the urohyal like fish-hook and its elongated sciatic part, and the division of the parahypural from the first preural centrum. On the other hand, geological studies about the Duho Formation consistently claimed that shallow-sea creatures were washed away by meteorological events such as a great flood and deposited at the bottom of deep-sea by the turbidity current. However, in Duho Formation, only shallow-sea ones have been discovered thus far. This study reported that Flat fish, deep-sea creature, was discovered in Duho Formation for the first time in Korea.

Paleomagnetic investigations have been carried out on the Tertiary sedimentary formations (Yeonil Group) in Pohang basin, southeastern Korea. A total of 215 samples were collected from 26 sites. Progressive thermal demagnetization indicates that many samples have unstable magnetization and do not reveal a characteristic direction. However, some samples from the lower and upper Duho Formation show a characteristic direction $D/I=7.8^{\circ}/48.3^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=3.7^{\circ}$, k=174.1). Stepwise thermal demagnetization data show that some samples from the Hagjeon and middle Duho Formations reveal great-circle distributions moving from the present to a reversed direction of geomagnetic field. The mean of intersection points of the great-circles is nearly antipodal to the characteristic normal direction of the lower and upper Duho Formation. We infer that the Hagjeon Formation was formed during the reversed polarity chron C5B (16.2~14.7 Ma) and the Duho Formation 14.7~11.6 Ma based on our results and previous paleontologic and age dating data. Paleomagnetic direction for the Middle Miocene of Korea, analysed from the combined results of stable endpoints and great circles, is $D/I=8.7^{\circ}/53.9^{\circ}$ (${\alpha}_{95}=4.2^{\circ}$, k=74.8), and the corresponding paleopole is Lat./Long.=$82.7^{\circ}/230.2^{\circ}$ (${\delta}p=2.8^{\circ}$, ${\delta}m=5.9^{\circ}$). On the basis of this, we interpret that the opening of the East sea (Japan sea) or the synchronous clockwise rotation of the Southwest Japan exerted no structural influence on the Yeonil Group in the Middle Miocene.
This study focuses on the investigation of geologic distribution and stratigraphy in the eastern part of Yeongdeok-gun, based on Lidar imaging, detailed field survey, microscopic observations, SHRIMP and LA-MC-ICPMS U-Pb age dating, and a new geological map has been created. The stratigraphy of the study area is composed of the Paleoproterozoic metamorphic rocks consisting of banded gneisses of sedimentary origin and schists ($1841.5{\pm}9.6Ma$) of volcanic origin, Triassic Yeongdeok plutonic rocks ($249.1{\pm}2.3Ma$) and Pinkish granites ($242.4{\pm}2.4Ma$), Jurassic Changpo plutonic rocks ($193.2{\pm}1.9Ma{\sim}188.8{\pm}2.0Ma$) and Fine-grained granites ($192.9{\pm}1.7Ma$), Formations [Gyeongjeongdong Fm, Ullyeonsan Fm. (~108 Ma), Donghwachi Fm.] of the Early Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup and acidic volcanic rocks and dykes erupted and intruded in the Late Cretaceous, Miocene intrusive rhyolitic tuffs ($23.1{\pm}0.2Ma{\sim}22.97{\pm}0.13Ma$) and sedimentary rocks of the Yeonghae basin, and the Quaternary sediments. The Triassic Pinkish granites, Jurassic Changpo plutonic rocks and Fine-grained granites are newly defined plutonic rocks in this study. Miocene intrusive rhyolitic tuffs bounded by the Yangsan Fault, which was first discovered in the north of Pohang city, are believed to play an important role in the understanding of the Miocene volcanic activity and the crustal deformation history on the Korean Peninsula. It is confirmed that The NNE-SSW-striking Yangsan Fault penetrating the central part of the study area and branch faults are predominant in the dextral movement and cutting all strata except the Quaternary sediments.
The Miocene andesite and basalt intruded into and/or extruded on the Cretaceous volcanic and granitic rocks over the area of Chenjabong and Sirubong in the vicinity of Jinhae, southern part of Kyongsang basin. The K-Ar ages of the younger volcanic rocks are from 16 Ma (Sirubong andesite) to 10 Ma (Cheonjabong basalt), which indicate the Miocene volcanism in the outer part of the Tertiary basin in the Korean peninsula. The volcanics are divided into Chenjabong andesite, Cheonjabong basaltic andesite, Sirubong andesite and Cheonjabong basalt. The Cheonjabong andesite is composed of phenocrysts of clinopyroxene and plagioclase ($An_{60{\sim}64}$) and groundmass with lath-like plagioclase ($An_{76{\sim}84}$) and glass. The Cheonjabong basaltic andesite is composed of plagioclase phenocryst ($An_{60{\sim}64}$) with plagioclase lath ($An_{65}$) and glass in groundmass. The Sirubong andesite is only consisted of plagiocalse lath ($An_{64{\sim}68}$) and glass with absence of phonocryst. The Cheonjabong basalt shows typical porphyritic texture with phenocrysts of olivine ($Fo_{69-84}$) and clinopyroxene. The groundmass of the Cheonjabong basalt is composed of microphenocrysts of olivine, clinopyroxene and plagioclase ($An_{66{\sim}71}$) and plagioclase laths ($An_{57{\sim}65}$) showing pillotaxitic and intergranular texture. The Cheonjabong andesite, Cheonjabong basaltic andesite, Sirubong andesite are belong to calc-alkialine but the Cheonjabong basalt is alkaline basalt. By tectonic discrimination diagrams the parental magmas of the volcanic rocks have occurred boundary.
