This research investigates the structural health monitoring of nonlinear structures after a major seismic event. It considers the identification of flag-shaped or pinched hysteresis behavior in response to structures as a more general case of a normal hysteresis curve without pinching. The method is based on the overall least squares methods and the log likelihood ratio test. In particular, the structural response is divided into different loading and unloading sub-half cycles. The overall least squares analysis is first implemented to obtain the minimum residual mean square estimates of structural parameters for each sub-half cycle with the number of segments assumed. The log likelihood ratio test is used to assess the likelihood of these nonlinear segments being true representations in the presence of noise and model error. The resulting regression coefficients for identified segmented regression models are finally used to obtain stiffness, yielding deformation and energy dissipation parameters. The performance of the method is illustrated using a single degree of freedom system and a suite of 20 earthquake records. RMS noise of 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% is added to the response data to assess the robustness of the identification routine. The proposed method is computationally efficient and accurate in identifying the damage parameters within 10% average of the known values even with 20% added noise. The method requires no user input and could thus be automated and performed in real-time for each sub-half cycle, with results available effectively immediately after an event as well as during an event, if required.
In this study, a real-scale fuel-cell room of volume 1.36 m3 is constructed to confirm the explosion characteristics of hydrogen-air mixture gas in a hydrogen-powered house. A volume concentration of 40% is applied in the fuel-cell room as the worst-case scenario to examine the most severe accident possible, and two types of doors (made of plastic sheet and wood) are fabricated to observe their effects on the overpressure and impulse. The peak overpressure and impulse based on distance from the ignition source are experimentally observed and assessed. The maximum and minimum overpressures with a plastic-sheet door are about 20 and 6.7 kPa and those with a wooden door are about 46 and 13 kPa at distances of 1 and 5 m from the ignition source, respectively. The ranges of impulses for distances of 1-5 m from the ignition source are about 82-28 Pa·s with a plastic-sheet door and 101-28 Pa·s with a wooden door. The amount of damage to people, buildings, and property due to the peak overpressure and impulse is presented to determine the safe distance; accordingly, the safe distance to prevent harm to humans is about 5 m based on the 'injuries' class, but the structural damage was not serious.
The reducing effect of wind injury was investigated using several wind-break nets in Youngdeok province where cold-wind damage is often occurred during rice growing season. The white-head damage of rice have been often occurred by typhoon during the period between August 15 to September 10 in the cold wind area of the eastern coastal during the last 11 years (1979-1989). This may suggest that the critical period for heading will be by August 15 in the regions. High evaporation coefficient, more than 250 due to typhoon passage over the regions resulted high injury of white head. Generally, the wind injury have been caused by warm and dry westerlies through Fohn apperance in Taebaeg mountains and by cool-humid wind which blows from coast to inland. The frequency of occurrence of the two types of typhoons were 25, 20%, respectively during rice cultivation. The instalation of wind-break net significantly reduced the wind blowing speed, depending on the net mesher with the higher effect in dence net. The distances between the net and cropping area also affect the wind speed: 23% reduction at 1m distance. 34% at 10m and 28% at 20m, respectively. The reducing effect was also observed even at 10 times height of the wind-break net. The instalation of wind-break net gave several effects on climate factor, showing that temperature increased by 0.8$^{\circ}C$(maximum), 0.7$^{\circ}C$(minimum), 0.6$^{\circ}C$(average) : water temperatures increased by 0.5$^{\circ}C$(maximum), 0.6$^{\circ}C$(minimum), 0.5$^{\circ}C$(average) : soil temperature increased 0.4$^{\circ}C$. The earlier heading and increasing growth rate, use of light, culm length, panicle number per hill, spikelet number per panicle, fertility and 1,000 grain weight were observed in the fields with the wind-break nets resulting in 10-15% increase in rice yield using 0.5${\times}$0.5cm nets. The increasing seedlings per hill gave higher grain yield by 13% in the cold wind damage regions of eastern coastals. and the wind-break was more significant in the field without the wind-break net. Wind injury of rice plant in the cold wind regions of eastern coastals in korea could be reduced by selection of tolerant varieties to wind injury, adjustment of transplanting time, and establishment of wind-break nets.

The purpose of this study is to find out and determine the minimum consumptive use of water for Korean cabbage and turmp, so that the minimum water requirement can be secured always for a stable cultivation of these vegetables regardless of weather conditions. The experiment was conducted in two periods; first one from May to July and second one from August to October, each experiment with two varieties of cabbage and two varieties of radish with 2 replicants and 15 treatments. The results found from the above are briefly as follows: 1. Since the mean soil moisture equivalent 64 days after the treatment was 28.5% and the soil moisture content at the time was 2.67% which is far less than that of the wilting point, the crop seemed to be extremely caused by a drought. 2. The rate of 51 days after the seeding, soil moisture content of plot No.2 where irrigation has been continuous was the highest or 21.3%, whereas the plot No.14 without irrigations was 11.2% and the lowest. Therefore, the soil moisture content for the minimum qrowth seemed to be 20%. 3. The consumptive coefficient of Blaney and Criddle on cabbage in two periods were K=1.14 and 0.97 respectively, and on radish in two periods were K=1.06 and 0.86 respectively, thus, cabbage was higher than radish. The consumptive coefficient in the first experiment (May-July) was 0.17 to 0.20 higher than the 2nd experiment(August-October). 4. Nomally, cabbage and radish germinate within one week, however, the germination ot these crops which were treated with a suspended water supply from the beginning took two full weeks. 5. When it elapsed 30 days after seeding, the conditions in plot 1,2 and 3 were fairly good however, the crops in the plops other than these showed a withering and the leaves were withered and changed into high green due to an extrem drought. Though it was about same at the beginning, the drought damage on cabbage was worse than that on radish period, and the reasos for this appears in the latter that the roots are grown too deep. 6. The cabbage showed a high affinity between treated plots and varieties. Consequently, it can be said that cabbage is very suseptive to drought damage, and the yield showed a difference of 35% to 56% depending on the selection oe varieties. 7. The radish also showed a high affinity between the treated plots, however, almost us affinity existed between varieties. Therfore, the yield of radish largely depends on the extent of drought, and the selection of variety does not affect at all. 8. The normal consumptive use on cabbage is $0.62{\ell}/sec$, while that on radish is $0.64{\ell}/sec$, and the minimum optimum water requirement that was obtained in this study is $4,000cc/day/m^3$ or $0.462{\ell}/sec/ha$.

To improve the accuracy of frost warning system for pear orchard in a complex terrain in Naju area, the daily minimum temperature forecasted by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) was interpolated using a regional climate model based on topoclimatic estimation and optimum scale interpolation from 2004 to 2005. Based on the validation experiments done for three pear orchards in the spring of 2004, the results showed a good agreement between the observed and predicted values, resulting in improved predictability compared to the forecast from Korea Meteorological Administration. The differences between the observed and the predicted temperatures were $-2.1{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the valley, $-1.6{\sim}2.7^{\circ}C$ (on average $-0.4^{\circ}C$) in the riverside and $-1.1{\sim}3.5^{\circ}C$ (on average $0.6^{\circ}C$) in the hills. Notably, the errors have been reduced significantly for the valley and riverside areas that are more affected by the cold air drainage and more susceptible to frost damage than hills.

In construction site, conventional methods such as jackhammer or explosive methods(dynamite) have been often used for the demolition of structures. Use of those methods are more carefully treated in environmentally and historically sensitive area. For those reasons, use of Soundless Chemical Demolition Agent(SCDA) is getting the spotlight. The SCDA is a powder which has expansive strength when it is mixed with water. In these Characteristics, SCDA can destroy the concrete or rock as it is poured into boreholes of the concrete or rock structures. However, there is no industrial standard for the use of SCDA effectively yet. In this study, experimental study to measure the expansive pressure was conducted depending on various boundary conditions such as waterproof, length of the steel pipe, submerged of steel pipe. Furthermore, computational analysis using damage plasticity model to predict the minimum required pressure of the SCDA for the concrete demolition depending on spacing between holes(k-factor) and compressive strength of the concrete was conducted. Obtained results indicates that water heat dissipation with submerged steel pipe shows the stable pressure for measuring the SCDA and hole distance(k-factor) is the most important factor for crack initiation of concrete.
Hydrogen energy technology is gaining importance in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, offering military advantages when applied to military vehicles due to its characteristics such as reduced greenhouse gas emissions, noise, and low vibration. Korea's military has initiated the Army Tiger 4.0 plan, focusing on hydrogen application, downsizing, and AI-based smart features. The Ministry of National Defense plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Environment to expand hydrogen charging stations nationwide, anticipating increased deployment of military hydrogen vehicles. However, considering the Jet Fire and VCE(Vapor Cloud Explosion) nature of hydrogen, ensuring safety during installation is crucial. Current military guidelines specify a minimum safety distance of 2m from adjacent buildings for charging stations. Scientific methods have been employed to quantitatively assess the accident damage range of hydrogen, proposing a minimum safety distance beyond the affected area.
It is important to determine the action spectrum of UV-B radiation contained in the sunlight to estimate the risk of skin cancer. We have investigated action spectra for induction of apoptosis and reproductive cell death in L5178Y cells using the Okazaki Large Spectrograph at NIBB. L5178Y cells were exposed to light at different wavelengths in UV-B or UV-A region. Frequencies of apoptosis induction and reproductive cell death were determined by counting cells with chromatin condensation, and by the colony formation assay, respectively. The measured sensitivity spectra for the two end-points were in very good agreement. Sensitivity decreased steeply with increase of wavelength in UV-B region and remains nearly constant in UV-A region. The action spectra were also slightly steeper than that for the minimum erythematic dose (MED), but very similar to the light absorption spectrum of DNA in UV-B region. On the other hand, the spectra for both endpoints were similar to MED spectrum but not DNA spectrum in the UV-A region. Also different time-course and morphological difference of apoptosis were found between UV-B (long time, fragmentation) and UV-A (short time, shrinkage) region. These results suggest that DNA damage induced by UV-B light triggers apoptosis and reproductive cell death, but other damaged targets (membrane, protein and so on) trigger these effects in UV-A region.
It has been an issue among researchers that the tsunamis that occurred on the west coast of Japan in 1983 and 1993 damaged the coastal cities on the east coast of Korea. In order to predict and reduce the damage to the Korean Peninsula effectively, it is necessary to install offshore tsunami observation instruments as part of the system for the early detection of tsunamis. The purpose of this study is to recommend the optimal deployment of tsunami observation instruments in terms of the higher probability of tsunami detection with the minimum equipment and the maximum evacuation and warning time according to the current situation in Korea. In order to propose the optimal location of the tsunami observation equipment, this study will analyze the tsunami propagation phenomena on the east sea by considering the potential tsunami scenario on the west coast of Japan through numerical modeling using the COrnell Multi-grid COupled Tsunami (COMCOT) model. Based on the results of the numerical model, this study suggested the optimal deployment of Korea's offshore tsunami observation instruments on the northeast side of Ulleung Island.
Hair bleaching is a treatment process in which the melanic pigment is oxidized by hydrogen peroxide. With the increase of the number of treatments, $1{\sim}10$ levels of various colors develop, the hair luster diminishes, and the appearance becomes very rough. In this study, by changing the number of hair bleaching and bleaching conditions, the changes in the degree of hair damage and its process were observed through the use of scanning electron microscopy. The color changes were also compared through the use of spectrophotometer. In order to study the physical changes of the bleached hairs and to search for the optimum conditions to keep the hair damages minimum during bleaching, tensile properties were measured and reviewed. By increasing the number of hair bleaching and by the severe conditions, the scales became eroded and the protection layers were decreased, and the oxidation reached the inner sectors resulting in rough surface and fibrillation. The surface of the hairs became bright yellowish and transparent by the bleaching of melanic pigments or by the destruction of pigments. With the increase of bleaching degree, in terms of physical changes, the breaking strength decreased while the elongation increased a little.
