This study investigated the influences of applying the Cognitive Conflict Process Model (the Procedural Teaching Model using Cognitive Conflict Strategy: Kwon, 1989) upon students' achievement and attitudes in a middle school science concept instruction. For the treatment group, science instruction to apply the Cognitive Conflict Process Model was used. For the control group, traditional instruction was used. Prior to instruction, students' pre-conceptions test and attitudes test related to the science were administered. After instruction, the above two tests and the regular examinations were measured. Also students' perceptions of their teacher's new teaching style was investigated by questionnaire. But, above all, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the principal accompanying matters of general application of the teaching model to science concept instruction rather than conceptual and attitudinal change. Therefore, this study identified necessary conditions of applying the teaching model to science instruction.

This study investigated the influences of a student-centered analogical instruction using physical analogies upon students' conception and application, retention of conception and application, perceptions of science classroom environment, and perceptions of analogical instruction. Six classes of seventh graders (N=208) at a middle school in Seoul were assigned to the control, the teacher-centered analogy (TCA), and the student-centered analogy (SCA) groups. They were taught about 'three states of matter' and 'motion of molecules' for 8 class hours. Analysis of the results revealed that the scores of the SCA group were significantly higher than those of the other groups in the conception test, retention test of conception and application, and perception test of science classroom environment. The scores of the SCA group in the application test were also higher than those of the other groups, but there was a significant difference only between the control and the SCA groups. The TCA group performed significantly better than the control group only in the test of the retention of application. In addition, the students in the SCA group exhibited more positive perceptions of the analogical instruction than those in the TCA group. Educational implications are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to examine middle school students' (N= 153) perceptions of motivational climate (teacher learning/teacher comparison/peer learning/peer comparison/peer worry) and their achievement goals (task/performance/performance-avoidance). The influence of perceptions of motivational climate emphasized by science teachers and/or peers on achievement goals was explored by stepwise regression. Although there was no difference in male/female perceptions of motivational climate, there was significant difference in their achievement goals. Regression result indicated that the pursuit of learning by peers made the strongest contribution to students' task goal. On the other hand, promotion via comparison by science teachers or peers had little effect on inducing performance goal. Anxieties about mistakes were found to be the strongest contribution to predictions on students' performance-avoidance goal. The promotion of comparison by science teachers was related to not only performance goal, but also performance-avoidance goal. Lastly educational implications for intervention efforts designed to enhance the quality of student motivational development in science education are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to construct two equivalent science relevance recognition test tool after confirming the reliability and validity of the CARS(Changes in Attitude of Relevance to Science) questionnaire to determine the applicability of the items to Korean students and to compare gender and school differences. For this study, 59 items of the CARS scientific relevance test were translated and assigned to 787 middle and high school students (analyed the answer of 300 middle school students and 431 high school students). In order to determine the fit of the CARS question to Korean students and to overcome the limitation of the number of questions, we used the item-linking method of the Rasch model. By analyzing the results of the research, we constructed two equivalent scientific relevance recognition questionnaires of CARS-A and CARS-B with 25 items. The Pearson correlation coefficient of the Rasch scores of the two equivalent test was 0.78. The two types of scientific relevance recognition test tools generated through this study can be used to confirm students' attitude of scientific relevance to daily life, or to confirm the change after a certain class or grade. Through this study, we will discuss the implications of students' perceptions of science associations in science education, and the development and application of tools.

In this study, 37 elementary, middle, and high school science teachers attending graduate schools of education were surveyed about their thoughts about the difficulty of teaching science units and teaching methods to teach these units to students. After experiencing the activity of making new teaching tools using scratch, we tried to confirm the development of TPACK among the teachers. Through the questionnaire survey for elementary, secondary, and high school science teachers, we selected the unit of Planetary Movement of the Solar System as a unit that is difficult for teachers to teach. We gave them the experience of instruction on tool making process for implementing a planetary operation model using scratch. Then, based on the questionnaires and class presentations, we analyzed the change of awareness about technology introduction and the development of their TPACK. As a result, most of the teachers showed changes of perceptions related to TK, TCK, TPK; the use of programming for creating teaching materials enhances teachers' understanding of the teaching contents; the teachers were convinced that students would develop the ability to construct models that fit observational phenomena; they thought that there would be a positive educational effect in the positive domain.

This study investigated the effect of small group discussion for science concept learning in cooperative learning environments that encourage verbal interaction with peers upon students' understanding of the concepts at the particulate level, application abilities, perceptions of students' negotiation, and communication apprehension. Two classes of 7th grade at a coed middle school were assigned to the control and the treatment groups. They were taught about change of states and motion of molecules for 7 class periods. Two-way ANCOVA results revealed that the scores of a conceptions test for the treatment group were significantly higher than those for the control group, and that the low-achievers in the treatment group performed better than those in the control group. However, the scores of two groups did not differ significantly in an application test. The perceptions of students' negotiation for the treatment group were more positive, but the scores of the communication apprehension for two groups were not significantly different.

This study examined the relationship between parenting, the quality of peer relationships, and loneliness in adolescents. This study also examined the mediating effects of the quality of peer relationships on the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness. A total of 506 1st and 2nd grade middle school students (261 boys and 245 girls) from the Seoul Metropolitan area completed measures of parenting, the quality of their peer relationships, and loneliness. The results indicated that adolescents' perceptions of parenting and the quality of their peer relationships were significantly related to their feelings of loneliness. Specifically, adolescents' perceptions of low levels of parental monitoring and high levels of abusive and neglectful parenting were associated with high levels of loneliness. Adolescents who perceived the quality of their peer relationships to be low reported high levels of loneliness. Further, the quality of peer relationships mediated the relationship between parenting and adolescents' loneliness; however, the pattern of associations differed for boys and girls. These findings suggest that both parent and peer relationship factors should be considered in combination in order to better explain loneliness in adolescents.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate satisfaction with and perception of the school meal service according to middle school students and dieticians/dietetic teachers in Gwangju area who experienced change to the free meal service and the main contents were as follows. Methods: The research subjects were 197 students (99 boys and 98 girls) and 42 dieticians/dietetic teachers were recruited. Results: Compared to the free meal service before, satisfaction of students was high (53.8%), and 69.9% of students said there was no change in the school meals, however a significant difference was observed between gender. Overall 80.2% of middle school students said that there was no change in menu, 70.6% were no change in the frequency of food with high preference, and 64.0% were no change in leftover of meals. 85.7% of dieticians/dietetic teachers said that there was no change in the student's satisfaction according to the conversion of free meal services; 59.5% of dieticians/dietetic teachers said that there was no change in the frequency of foods with high preference, the variety of vegetables was increased in the qualitative change item of food materials, and 95% of them were not aware of change in the amount of students' leftover foods. Dieticians/dietetic teachers had limitations in selecting menus with purchase and costs of food materials (26.2%) by conversion of the free meal service and their priority considered was the food cost (45.2%) when they selected menus. Change in feeding affairs was office work management (26.2%) and recipe research and development (19.0%). Conclusion: With the results of this study, the satisfaction with the school meal service was not changed in the awareness of students and dieticians/dietetic teachers. Therefore further study is needed to determine the middle school's satisfaction with school meals based on a variety of factors including the environmental food meal services.

This study investigates Korean middle school students' perceptions as global citizens (i.e. ecological worldview, social and moral compassion, and socioscientific accountability) of Socioscientific Issues (SSI). We developed questionnaires that consisted of 20 Likert-type items to gauge their preceptions of the three different SSI contexts (i.e. nuclear power generation, bio-technology, climate change), and administered them to 225 9th grade students in Seoul. The results revealed that participants showed relatively high scores for ecological worldview but scored low on social and moral compassion across the SSI contexts. In addition, participants presented much higher scores for ecological worldview and socioscientific accountability regarding the issues of climate change. The participant responses indicated that they perceived more inter-connectedness with the environment and felt the responsibility of promoting sustainable development more to prevent further devastation in the context of climate change compared to nuclear power generation or biotechnology.
