There has been an interest to develop an efficient, compact microwave device using field-emitter-arrays (FEA)-based cathode. Toe valuate the optimum device-efficiency in a compact size, the propagation properties of the premodulated electron beam for the FEA-based cathode is studied in detail by the computer simulation using a PIC code, MAGIC. For the premodulated electron beam whose phase of the energy leads the phase of the current by $\pi$/2, the amplitude of the downstream current modulation can be kept as high as the initial modulation level. Using the beam parameters with the beam voltage of 6kV and the current of 2.0A, 30% of efficiency is predicted when the quality factor of 800 is chosen. the device length is reduced about twice compared with that of the conventional device. The design of practical planar cathode is carried out to meet the minimum diameter of the electron beam as 0.5 mm.

A power supply of cathode has been developed for hall-effect thruster for small satellite. A microwave cathode has been applied to the electric propulsion system and cathode power is necessary in oder to work securely. Anode current is varied by a flow rate controlled by anode tank pressure. Then cathode current has to be controled in proportion by anode current. So cathode power supply has been designed to offer a current proportional to anode current. Also cathode power has been tuned to work securely for cathode to emit more electron than anode within 0.03A. The function test of cathode power was performed by constructing an equivalent load for anode and cathode. It has been tested in a vacuum chamber in order to ensure a stable operation of the thruster. And it was confirmed that thruster normally has been operated in the space environment after the launch.
The microwave power supply is mainly composed of the cathode power supply supplying the beam voltage and beam current of the gyrotron and body power supply for the single depressed collector (SDC) operation, which requires the cathode voltage/current of 80 kV/24 A for the cathode and +24 kV for the body. This paper is describing the power supply system for the gyrotron of KSTAR.
In order to utilize as a pre-ionization means for reproducible ohmic plasma on KAIST-TOKAMAK, a simple, safe, economical and continuous microwave source has been developed using a home kitchen micro-wave oven. The magnetron used in the study can provide 500 W of power at 2.45 GHz. A conventional magnetron in a home kitchen microwave oven generates microwave for 8 ms at every 16 ms periodically due to the periodic (60 Hz) high voltage applied to the magnetron cathode. In order to generate continuous microwave which is suitable for tokamak pre-ionization, the magnetron operation circuit has been modified using a DC high voltage (5 kV, 1 A) power supply. It provides high-voltage with small ripple for magnetron cathode bias. Using the developed magnetron system, electron cyclotron resonace heated (ECH) plasmas were produced and the characteristics of the system were studied by diagnosing the ECH plasma using Langmuir probe and $H_{\alpha}$ emission diagnostics.
To improve the polarization property of cathodes, which is the main factor limiting the performance of protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs), $K_2NiF_4-type$$Pr_2NiO_{4+{\delta}}$, which is expected to exhibit a triple conducting property (proton, oxygen ion, and hole conductions) was applied to PCFCs and its properties were investigated. Low-temperature microwave heat-treatment was used to achieve both sufficient interface adhesion between the electrolyte and the cathode layers and suppression of the secondary phase formation due to migration of elements such as barium and cerium. Through this fabrication method, a high performance of $0.82W{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ and low ohmic resistance of $0.06{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$ were obtained in an $Ni-BaCe_{0.55}Zr_{0.3}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ | $BaCe_{0.55}Zr_{0.3}Y_{0.15}O_{3-{\delta}}$ | $Pr_2NiO_{4+{\delta}}$ single cell at $650^{\circ}C$. This result verifies that the $K_2NiF_{4+{\delta}}-type$ cathode shows good chemical compatibility which, in turn, will make it a potent candidate as a PCFC cathode.
In this work, a metal-ligand solution (Cu-EDTA) was prepared based on the molecular precursor method and the solution was spin-coated onto 3D printed flexible photosensitive resin sheets. After being processed by microwave, a laser with a wavelength of 355 nm was utilized to scan the spin-coated sheets and then the sheets were immersed in an electroless copper plating solution to deposit copper wires. With the help of microwave processing, the adhesion between copper wires and substrate was improved which should result from the increase of roughness, decrease of contact angle and the consistent orientation of coated film according to the results of 3D profilometer and SEM. XPS results showed that copper seeds formed after laser scanning. Using the 3D printed flexible sheets as cathode and galvanized iron as anode, electrochemical machining was conducted.

$Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ cathode materials have been synthesized by a microwave-assisted sol-gel method. The structure and electrochemical properties of $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ were studied by X-ray difftactometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and charge-discharge cycler. The powder prepared by microwave assisted sol-gel method showed good crystallinity and well-defined facet shapes. The $Li[Ni_{0.2}Li_{0.2}Mn_{0.6}]O_2$ electrode delivered a high discharge capacity of 230 $mAhg^{-1}$ at the specific current of 40 $mAg^{-1}$ (0.2 C rate) in the voltage range of 2.0${\sim}$4.8 V. About 60 % of the discharge capacity measured at 0.2 Crate (140 $mAhg^{-1}$) was maintained at a 6 C (1200 $mAg^{-1}$)rate. The cyclic property was also stable and it did not deteriorated at a high Crate.

Institute of Space and Astronautical Science of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency(ISAS/JAXA) successfully developed and operated the microwave discharge ion engines onboard Hayabusa asteroid explorer. The ${\mu}10$ ion engines feature the cathode-less plasma generation in both the ion generators and neutralizers with the results of long life and high reliability in space. Based on the space achievements of ${\mu}10$ ion engines with 8mN thrust, 3,000sec Isp and 350W consumption power, several programs are currently under developments: ${\mu}20$, ${\mu}10$HIsp and ${\mu}1$. The first is a 20-cm diameter microwave discharge ion engine, aiming to achieve 30mN/kW in the thrustto-power ratio for the asteroid sample return mission larger than Hayabusa. The second is a high Isp version of ${\mu}10$, and exhausts the plasma beam over 10,000sec Isp using 15kV acceleration voltage for deep space missions to such as Jupiter and Mercury. The third is ${\mu}1$ to be adapted to small satellites for drag-free.
The hierarchical-structured $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were synthesized by one-step microwave synthesis, and their electrochemical properties were investigated. Addition of citric acid during the reaction lead to the formation of hierarchical structured $LiFePO_4$, which has both nano- and micron-characteristics advantageous for energy density and electrode fabrication. Adjusting the molar ratio of Fe to citric acid enhanced the electrochemical properties of $LiFePO_4$.
