  • Development of phases, evolution of microstructures, and dielectric response characteristics of amorphous lead iron tungstates during crystabllization were investiageted. A series of mircographs showing the evolution sequence of microstructures is presented. Crystallization was observed to initiate from inside of the amorphous material. A cubic perovskite phase developed fully at $760^{\circ}C$ from amorphous state via intermediate metastable crystalline structures. Dielectric constant of amorphous PFM was totally insensitive to the temperature change around the Curie temperature of crystalline material. Sintered pellet, with relative density of 96% and an almost pore-free dense internal microstructure, could be prepared from amorphous powder.

  • In this paper mechanical properties of reaction-bonded silicon nitride are studied with the variation of initial nitrogen partial pressure. At 1, 25$0^{\circ}C$ the amount of nitridation and the nucleation of nitride increase linearly with the nitrogen partial pressure increase. After the nitridation is completed the density of nitride and modulus of rupture at room temperature are increased with the amount of nitridation. When the partial pressure of nitrogen is 0.5 atm the specimen show the optimum properties that is the highest density of nitride and modulus of rupture. Also the microstructure of $\alpha$-matte is deveoped very well at that pressure of nitrogen which contributes to the strength development of specimen. It is shown that with proper control of initial partial pressure of nitrogen high strength silicon nitride body can be manufactured for dynamic applications.

  • Silicon carbide ceramics seeded with 10-30 wt% SiC whiskers are fabricated by hot pressing and annealing. A quantitative texture analysis including calculation of the Orientation Distribution Function (ODF) is used for obtaining the degrees of preferred orientation of the fabricated samples. The microstructure and crystallographic texture are discussed with respect to the effect of ${\beta}-SiC$ whisker seeds on the resulting fracture toughness values. The SEM microstructures and the texture data reveal a correlation between texture and fracture toughness anisotropy.

  • The purpose of present study is to examine the application of effective curing to hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars. The epoxy-modified mortars are prepared with polymer-cement ratios, subjected to two types of curing conditions, and tested for compressive, flexural and tensile strengths. As a result, hardener-free epoxy-modified mortars with steam curing is markedly improved with increasing air-dry curing period. High strength development of the epoxy-modified mortars may be achieved by the dense microstructure by cement and the hardener of the epoxy resin in the mortars.

  • The study of mechanical properties and fracture behaviour of carbon/carbon composites is significant to its application and development. These are dependent on microstructure and properties of reinforcing fibers and matrix, fiber/matrix interface and porosity/cracks present in the composites. In the present studies high-density carbon/carbon composites have been prepared using PAN and various pitch based carbon fibers as reinforcements and pitch as matrix with repeated densification cycles using high-pressure impregnation and carbonization technique. Scanning electron microscopy has been used to study the fracture behaviour of the highly dense composites and correlated with structure of the composites. The geometry of reinforcement and presence of unfilled voids/cracks was found to influence the path of crack propagation and thereby the strength of composites. The type of stresses (tensile or compressive) accumulated also plays an important role in fracture of composites.

  • New glass ceramics were investigated for the application as substrates to be used in hard disk devices. The glass system to precipitate lithium di-silicate was studied so as to optimize the composition to realize very high surface flatness. The addition of small amount of several metal oxides with high valences had very drastic effects on the microstructure, because they played a role of crystallization agents, and consequently it determined surface flatness even after the polishing process. The possible mechanism changes of crystal growth due to the addition of metal oxides were discussed in relation to the final micro-texture development. The glass ceramics with very high surface flatness(Ra=7.1 $\AA$) was obtained by the addition of the mixture of $P-2O_5 \;and \;MoO_3$ as crystallization agents.

  • Molding technologies for plastic microstructures have been extensively investigated during the last two decades, and theoretical and numerical studies on the micro molding process have provided efficient tools for the development of such molding technologies. In this paper, we present a review of numerical simulation methods for the micro molding process. Basic models for a description of the material property, governing equations of the flow and heat transfer during the molding process, and numerical methods will be described. Particularly, numerical simulations for micro injection molding and hot embossing processes will be presented, and their main features noted and compared to those for conventional molding processes.

  • The effect of sulfur content and inoculant on solidification microstructure and mechanical properties of gray cast iron have been investigated. The main results obtained are as follows, 1. In the FeSi3Ca1Ba inoculated irons, with the variation of sulfur content, low sulfur levels (${\sim}0.03%$) yield low chill depth, high tensile strength, good wear resistance and type A graphite with a pearlite matrix. High sulfur levels( >0.08%) provide high chill depth, low mechanical proper ties and type D graphite with small amount ferrite. 2. In case of inoculant variation with normal FeSi, FeSi3Ca1Ba, 30CaSi and uninoculation at 0.03%S level, lower chill depth and higher tensile strength was obtained in the order ; 30CaSi, FeSi3Ca1Ba normal FeSi, uninoculation.

  • Mechanical seals are generally used in the fields of industries as sealing devices. The failure of mechanical seals like crack, leakage, breakage fast and severe wear, excessive torque, and squeaking result in big problems. For the development of monitoring system, this study was carried out to identify abnormal phenomina on alumina(AI $\_$2/ O /sub3/) seal ring and resin bonded carbon ring, and to propose the proper parameter for monitoring failure on mechanical seals. Sliding were tests are conducted at 12 experimental conditions that contains 3 different contact pressure and 4 surface conditions. Torque, temperature, and acoustic emission are measured. Optical microstructure and scanning electron microscopy are observed for the wear processing every 10 minute sliding at rotation speed of 1750 RPM.

  • Aluminum alloy casting is gaining increased acceptance in automotive and electronic industries and especially, squeeze casting is the most efficient method of mass manufacturing of such parts. In this study, the microstructures and mechanical properties of Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg(AC4C) alloy fabricated by squeeze casting process for development of fuel system parts (fuel rail) are investigated. The microstructure of squeeze cast specimen was composed of eutectic structure aluminum solid solution and $Mg_2Si$ precipitates. The tensile strength of as-solid solution treatment Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg alloy was 298.5MPa. It was found that Al-7.0Si-0.4Mg alloy had good corrosion resistance in electrochemical polarization test.
