  • In this study, we focused on the correlation between the solidification structure, heat treatment and mechanical properties of the A356 alloy according to the conditions of Sr modification. The microstructural evolution of the eutectic Si and ${\alpha}-Al$ phase in the A356 alloy castings depending on the amount of Sr were investigated during solid solution heat treatment using an optical microscope, a scanning electron microscope and an image analyzer. In addition, tensile tests on the heat treated materials examined the relationship between the microstructure and the fracture surface. The as-cast A356 alloys under 40 ppm Sr showed an undermodified microstructure, but that of the added 60-80 ppm Sr had well modified structure of fine fibrous silicon. After solid solution treatment, the microstructure of the undermodified A356 alloy exhibited a partially spheroidized morphology, but the remainder showed the fragmentation of fibrous shaped silicon. The spheroidization of the eutectic silicon in the modified A356 alloys was completed during heat treatment, which was very effective in increasing the elongation. This is supported by the fracture surface in the tensile test.

  • Microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al-6Si-2Cu alloy for lightweight automotive parts were investigated. The test specimens were prepared by gravity casting process. Solution heat treatments were applied to as-cast alloys to improve mechanical properties. The microstructure of the gravity casting specimen presents a typical dendrite structure, having a secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) of $37{\mu}m$. In addition to the Al matrix, a large amount of coarsened eutectic Si, $Al_2Cu$ intermetallic phase, and Fe-rich phases were identified. After solution heat treatment, single-step solution heat treatments were found to considerably improve the spheroidization of the eutectic Si phase. Two-step solution treatments gave rise to a much improved spheroidization. The mechanical properties of the two-step solution heat treated alloy have been shown to lead to higher values of properties such as tensile strength and microhardness. Consequentially, the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of Al alloy have been successfully characterized and are available for use with other basic data for the development of lightweight automotive parts.

  • Homogeneous microstructures of the PM compacts are difficult to attain when mixed elemental powders are used. This study examined the microstructures of pressed-and-sintered and MIM products that contain Ni and Mo.Ni-rich areas, which were lean in carbon and were soft and were found easily in regular specimens. Gaps or cracks near the Ni-rich or Mo-rich areas were also frequently observed. This problem worsened when Ni and Mo particles were large and were irregular in shape. By using ball milling treatment and ferroalloy powders, the microstructure homogeneity and mechanical properties were improved. The addition of 0.5wt%Cr further improved the distribution of Ni because Cr reduced the repulsion effect between nickel and carbon. With the elimination of Ni-rich areas, more bainites and martensites were formed and mechanical properties were significantly improved.

  • The present study is to investigate the effect of heat input on the microstructure, tensile properties and toughness of single-pass submerged arc bead-in-groove welds produced on SA508 class 3 steels. The heat input was varied in the range of 1.6, 3.2 and 5.0 kJ/mm. The toughness of weld metals was evaluated by using subsize Charpy V-notch specimens in the temperature range of -19$0^{\circ}C$ to 2$0^{\circ}C$. The weld microstructure and fractography were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopies, respectively. With increasing heat inputs, tensile strength and hardness of weld metals were decreased while elongation was increased. The poor notch toughness at 1.6 kJ/mm was attributed to the formation of ferrite with aligned second phase and banitic microstructure with high yield strength while that at 5.0 kJ/mm was due to the presence of grain boundary and polygonal ferrites. The microstructure of the intermediate energy input welds consisted of a high proportion of acicular ferrite with limited polygonal ferrites, which provide improved notch toughness.

  • This experiments were focused on a modification of mechamical properties and structure in porous aluminum titanate ceramics by new additives which have been not researched yet. These were consisted of four kinds of additives i.e. Bi2O3, FeO, ZnO and NiO by addition amount of 1 wt% and 5 wt% respectively. The addition of Bi2O3 retarded a degree of syntehsis of aluminum titanate and accelerated in FeO, ZnO, NiO additives. Also, the most effective accelerator in synthesis of alunium titanate was FeO. A additives for the most effective of modification of microstructure, sharp distribtion of pore size and mechanical proterties was on ZnO addition and showed the lowest average pore size and narrowed pore size distribution. In order to improve of microstructure and pore size distribution in porous aluminum titanate ceramics was desired the addition amount of 1 wt% compare to 5 wt%.

  • Nanocrystalline HfN coatings were prepared by reactively sputtering Hf metal target with N2 gas using a magnetron sputtering system operated in DC and ABPP (asymmetric bipolar pulsed plasma) condition with various duties and frequencies. The effects of duty and frequency, ranging from 75 to 100 % and 5 to 50 kHz, on the coating microstructure, crystallographic and mechanical properties were systematically investigated with FE-SEM, AFM, XRD and nanoindentation. The results show that pulsed plasma has a significant influence on coating microstructure and mechanical properties of HfN coatings. Coating microstructure evolves from the columnar structure to a highly dense one as duty decreases. Average grain size and nano hardness of HfN coatings were also investigated with various pulsed conditions.

  • A Cu-15Ag-5P filler metal (BCuP-5) is fabricated on a Ag substrate using a high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray process, followed by post-heat treatment (300℃ for 1 h and 400℃ for 1 h) of the HVOF coating layers to control its microstructure and mechanical properties. Additionally, the microstructure and mechanical properties are evaluated according to the post-heat treatment conditions. The porosity of the heat-treated coating layers are significantly reduced to less than half those of the as-sprayed coating layer, and the pore shape changes to a spherical shape. The constituent phases of the coating layers are Cu, Ag, and Cu-Ag-Cu3P eutectic, which is identical to the initial powder feedstock. A more uniform microstructure is obtained as the heat-treatment temperature increases. The hardness of the coating layer is 154.6 Hv (as-sprayed), 161.2 Hv (300℃ for 1 h), and 167.0 Hv (400℃ for 1 h), which increases with increasing heat-treatment temperature, and is 2.35 times higher than that of the conventional cast alloy. As a result of the pull-out test, loss or separation of the coating layer rarely occurs in the heat-treated coating layer.

  • The effect of forging start temperature, forging ratio on the microstructure and mechanical properties of B7B4 steel ware investigated. Microstructure of centrifugal casted B7B4 steel consisted of martensite and ferrite phase. The volume fraction of ferrite increased with increase of forging start temperature and decreased with increase of forging ratio. Tensile strength and hardness decreased with higher of forging start temperature, while impact value and elongation increased with higher of forging start temperature. With increase of forging ratio, tensile strength rapidly increased up to the forging ratio of 30%, and then slowly increased, but elongation was decreased. Hardness and impact value rapidly increased with increase of forging ratio.

  • The microstructural features and texture development by both hot rolling and hot forging in ${\gamma}-TiAl$ alloy were investigated. In addition, additional heat treatment after hot forging was conducted to recognize change of the microstructure and texture evolution. The obtained microstructural features through dynamic recrystallization after hot deformed ${\gamma}-TiAl$ were quite different because two kinds of formation process were occurred depending on deformation condition. However, analyzed texture tends to be random orientation due to intermediate annealing up to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ region during the hot deformation process. After additional heat treatment, microstructure transformed into fully lamellar microstructure and randomly oriented texture was also observed due to the same reason as before. Tensile test at room temperature demonstrated that anisotropy of mechanical properties were not appeared and transgranular fracture was occurred between interface of ${\alpha}_2/{\gamma}$. As a result, it could be suggested that microstructural features influenced much more than texture development on mechanical properties at room temperature.
