Field Programmable Gate Array Reliability Analysis Using the Dynamic Flowgraph Methodology

  • Field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based systems are thought to be a practical option to replace certain obsolete instrumentation and control systems in nuclear power plants. An FPGA is a type of integrated circuit, which is programmed after being manufactured. FPGAs have some advantages over other electronic technologies, such as analog circuits, microprocessors, and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), for nuclear instrumentation and control, and safety system applications. However, safety-related issues for FPGA-based systems remain to be verified. Owing to this, modeling FPGA-based systems for safety assessment has now become an important point of research. One potential methodology is the dynamic flowgraph methodology (DFM). It has been used for modeling software/hardware interactions in modern control systems. In this paper, FPGA logic was analyzed using DFM. Four aspects of FPGAs are investigated: the "IEEE 1164 standard," registers (D flip-flops), configurable logic blocks, and an FPGA-based signal compensator. The ModelSim simulations confirmed that DFM was able to accurately model those four FPGA properties, proving that DFM has the potential to be used in the modeling of FPGA-based systems. Furthermore, advantages of DFM over traditional reliability analysis methods and FPGA simulators are presented, along with a discussion of potential issues with using DFM for FPGA-based system modeling.

지능형 액추에이터와 제어면 재분배를 이용한 무인항공기 고장대처 제어시스템 (Fault-Tolerant Control System for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Using Smart Actuators and Control Allocation)

  • This paper presents a FTNCS (Fault-Tolerant Networked Control System) that can tolerate control surface failure and packet delay/loss in an UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle). The proposed method utilizes the benefits of self-diagnosis by smart actuators along with the control allocation technique. A smart actuator is an intelligent actuation system combined with microprocessors to perform self-diagnosis and bi-directional communications. In the event of failure, the smart actuator provides the system supervisor with a set of actuator condition data. The system supervisor then compensate for the effect of faulty actuators by re-allocating redundant control surfaces based on the provided actuator condition data. In addition to the compensation of faulty actuators, the proposed FTNCS also includes an efficient algorithm to deal with network induced delay/packet loss. The proposed algorithm is based on a Lagrange polynomial interpolation method without any mathematical model of the system. Computer simulations with an UAV show that the proposed FTNCS can achieve a fast and accurate tracking performance even in the presence of actuator faults and network induced delays.

임베디드 마이크로 프로세서의 전력 소비에 대한 연구 (A Study on Power Dissipation of Embedded Microprocessors)

  • 프로세서의 전력 소비량은 최근에 이르러 고성능 마이크로프로세서 및 멀티코어프로세서 뿐만이 아니라 임베디드 시스템 및 모바일 장치에 매우 중요하게 대두되고 있다. 이러한 전력 소비량은, 하드웨어 및 소프트웨어 설계자로 하여금 성능과 전력에 대한 올바른 타협점을 찾도록 하는 바탕이 된다. 대부분의 전력 분석 도구들은 반도체 칩 레이아웃이나 평면계획이 완료된 후에야 최소의 정확도를 갖게 되며 또한 느리다. 본 논문에서는 전력 분석기와 연동이 가능한 빠른 속도를 갖는 임베디드 마이크로프로세서 명령어 자취형 (trace-driven) 모의실험기를 개발하였다. 또한, MiBench 임베디드 벤치마크를 입력으로 모의실험을 수행하여 기존의 도구보다 훨씬 빠른 속도로 명령어 당 평균 전력 소비량을 측정하였다.

행렬구조 메모리 참조표를 사용한 페트리네트 제어기의 하드웨어 구현 (Hardware implementation of Petri net-based controller with matrix-based look-up tables)

  • This paper describes a hardware implementation method of a Petri Net-based controller. A flexible and systematic implementation method, based on look-up tables, is suggested, which enables to build high speed Petri net-based controllers. The suggested method overcomes the inherent speed limit that arises from the microprocessors by using of matrix-based look-up tables. Based on the matrix framework, this paper suggests various specific data path structures as well as a basic data path structure, accompanied by evolution algorithms, for sub-class Petri nets. A new sub-class Petri net, named Biarced Petri Net, resolves memory explosion problem that usually comes with matrix-based look-up tables. The suggested matrix-based method based on the Biarced Petri net has as good efficiency and expendability as the list-based methods. This paper shows the usefulness of the suggested method, evaluating the size of the look-up tables and introducing an architecture of the signal processing unit of a programmable controller. The suggested implementation method is supported by an automatic design support program.

  • 본 논문은 MCU에 내장된 플레쉬 메모리의 오동작 테스트를 shmoo 테스트 기법을 사용하고, 이 기능을 내장한 롬라이트 개발에 관한 논문이다. shmoo 테스트는 다양한 입력조건에 대한 응답을 도표로 나타내고 분석하는 기법으로, 마이크로프로세서, ASIC 및 메모리와 같은 집적회로 또는 컴퓨터 시스템의 성능분석의 기법으로 사용된다. 개발된 롬라이터는 Shmoo 검사를 수행하고 Flash 32K의 쓰기를 수행하였을 때 6.4s 정도의 시간이 소요되었으며, 이는 현재 사용하고 있는 ROM Writer의 속도에 비해 약 20% 정도 향상되었다.

40 채널 광 신호 레벨 제어기 (Level Controller On Optical Signal of 40 Channel)

  • 채널 레벨 컨트롤러는 DWDM(Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) 방식의 OXC(Optical Cross Connect), OADM(Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer), 광 증폭기(EDFA : Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) 등의 시스템에서 채널별 광 신호의 세기를 조절하여 시스템의 신뢰성을 높이는 중요한 제어기다. 본 논문에서는 12채널 VOA(Variable Optical Attenuator) 4개를 사용하여 40채널의 광 신호 레벨을 제어할 수 있는 컨트롤러를 구현하였다. 각 채널의 광 신호 레벨을 제어하는데 하나의 마이크로프로세서가 5개의 채널을 제어하고 총 8개의 마이크로프로세서로 40채널을 분산 제어하도록 구성하였다. 또한 외부와 통신을 하고 사용자로부터의 명령을 각각의 마이크로프로세서에 전달하기 위한 마이크로프로세서를 추가하였다. 출력 되는 광 신호의 세기를 측정하여 VOA를 제어하고 VOA 출력에서 바로 PD(Photo Detector)로 입력하였다. 일반적으로는 AWG(Arrayed Waveguide Grating) 출력에서 광 신호를 다시 분파하여 PD에 입력하는 방법으로 매우 복잡하다. 본 연구는 이를 개선하여 매우 간단한 방법으로 다 채널의 광 신호를 제어 할 수 있었다.

  • 도시차원의 분산전원 공급전력량과 수요측의 소비전력을 모니터링하고 제어 및 보호하기 위해서는 기존의 계통 운용 설비들로는 충족시키기 어려운 여러 가지 요구들이 발생하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 해양도시차원의 분산전원의 전력공급량 및 수요 측의 소비전력량을 모니터링하고 제어하는 전력 모니터링 센서 시스템을 설계하였다.

Study on analog-based ex-core neutron flux monitoring systems of Korean nuclear power plants for digitization

  • The analog-based Ex-core Neutron Flux Monitoring System (ENFMS) in Korean Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs) has been performing its intended functions successfully for a long time. On the other hand, the primary concern with the extended use of analog systems is the aging effect, such as mechanical failures, environmental degradation, and obsolescence. The transition to a digital-based Man-Machine Interface Systems (MMIS) in Korea and other countries has been accelerating, but some systems are still analog-based IC systems, such as the ENFMS in APR1400 NPPs. Digitalized ENFMS can become a reality using computers and microprocessors owing to the progress in digital electronics and information technology. This paper presents the result of the first phase of the research on the digitalization of the ENFMS signal processing electronics for NPPs operated or produced in Korea. It has two main parts: (1) review engineering bases of ex-core neutron flux monitoring system, including nuclear engineering, instrumentation techniques, and analog and digital signal processing techniques, and (2) analysis of analog signal processing electronics of ENFMS for OPR1000 and APR1400 power plants. They are prerequisite to the second phase of the research which is the detailed implementation of the digitalization.

유압식 구동장치의 서보밸브 오프셋 보정 방법에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Research of Servo Valve Offset Correction Method of Hydraulic Actuator)

  • Despite the development of electronic components and microprocessors, hydraulic actuators are still being applied in various applications. In some applications, there is a desire to apply a hydraulic actuator with a relatively small position error to the system. Various studies have been conducted to reduce the position error of hydraulic actuators. In this paper, the position error of the hydraulic actuator when the hydraulic oil pressure is supplied is defined as the offset generated by the servo valve, and the method for correcting the servo valve offset has been studied. A method for compensating the servo valve offset was proposed and it was verified through experiments that the position error of the hydraulic actuator was reduced. We also compared the servo valve offset correction method and controller using the PID control and disturbance observer used to reduce the position error of the hydraulic actuator. No-load test and load test were performed to confirm the performance of the servo valve offset correction method. The results of the study were compared with those obtained by using the disturbance observer and PID control.

차세대 사물인터넷에 대한 고찰 (Direction of Next-Generation Internet of Things)

  • The role of Internet of Things (IoT) has been evolving from connectivity to intelligent and autonomous functions. The increase in the number of connected things and the volume of data has revealed the limit of cloud-based intelligent IoT. Meanwhile, the development of microprocessors for the IoT has enabled their intelligent decision making and reactions without the intervention of the cloud; this phase is referred to as the "autonomous IoT era." However, intelligence is not the only function of the IoT. When a cyber physical system (CPS) is running on the cloud, the real-time synchronization between the real and virtual worlds cannot be guaranteed. If a CPS is running on the IoT, both the worlds can be synchronized closely enough for a zero- time gap, i.e., achieving the goals of autonomous IoT. ETRI implements intelligence into the role of IoT and collaborates their decision making and reactions without the intervention of humans. Then, we focus on the development of a new IoT computing paradigm that enables human-like discussions.
