Fabrication of Artificial Crystal Architectures by Micro-manipulation of Spherical Particles

  • We newly designed and manufactured a new arranging system for a three-dimensional artificial crystal of monosized micro particles. In this system, a robotic micro-manipulator accurately locates the spherical particle onto the lattice point, and subsequently fiber lasers micro-weld the contact points between the neighboring particles. Actually, one- and two-dimensional arrays were constructed using monosized tin particles with the diameter of 400 m. Moreover, due to optimization of the process parameters, we successfully constructed the artificial crystals of simple cubic and diamond structures. In particular, the diamond structure which can represent a large photonic band gap is expected to progress toward a practical photonic crystal device.

산화 금속 입자 크기가 옥수수의 성장과 토양 미생물 군집에 미치는 독성 (Size-dependent Toxicity of Metal Oxide Particles on the Soil Microbial Community and Growth of Zea Mays)

  • 본 연구에서는 CuO와 ZnO의 입자 크기가 옥수수의 성장과 토양 미생물 군집에 미치는 독성을 microcosm 실험을 통하여 살펴보았다. 나노 입자는 micro 입자에 비해 옥수수의 biomass를 약 30% 감소시켜 나노 입자가 옥수수의 성장을 저해하는 것으로 나타났다. 토양 미생물 활성 지표인 Dehydrogenase activity는 CuO 나노 입자에서는 낮게 나타났으나 ZnO 나노 입자에서는 높게 나타났다. Biolog test 결과, CuO 나노 입자와 ZnO micro 입자에서 토양 미생물 다양성이 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로, metal oxide의 나노 입자가 micro 입자보다 항상 토양 미생물의 활성 및 다양성에 더 유해한 영향을 나타내는 것은 아니라고 판단된다.

기포를 이용한 미세 부유 폴리에틸렌 입자 포획에 대한 연구 (Study of capturing micro-sized floating polyethylene particles using a bubble)

  • Underwater environmental pollution caused by microplastic particles is considered to be one of the most serious problems in many oceans and countries nearby. Previous academic studies or field technologies tried to remove the micro-sized particles are often energy-consuming and costly, so it is hard to be employed for the actual uses. In this study, the mechanism of removal of micro-sized polyethylene spheres (size in order of 100㎛) using a rising bubble is experimentally investigated. It is found that the particles are either affected by bubble wake, thus translocated close to the water surface, or pushed far away by the surrounding fluid flow, depending on their initial position relative to the bubble. By scrutinizing the visualized behaviors of bubble-particle interaction, we draw the governing parameter, i.e., the polar angle between the particle and the bubble, to determine the effective capturing of the particles with a rising bubble.

Chemically Aged Asian Dust Particles Proven by Traditional Spot Test and the Most Advanced micro-PIXE

  • A change in chemical compositions of Asian dust (AD) particles can dramatically alter their optical properties, cloud-forming properties, and health effects. The present study was undertaken to evaluate this aging of AD particles by means of two complementary methods (i.e., the traditional spot test and the most advanced micro-PIXE analytical technique) for single particle analysis. Size-classified particles were sampled at the rural peninsula of Korea (Byunsan, 35.37N; 126.27E) during AD event and non-AD period in 2004. Sulfate was principally enriched on the particles in the size range of $7.65-10.85{\mu}m$ collected during AD event. The average number fraction of coarse particles ($>2.05{\mu}m$) containing chloride was 16.2% during AD event. Relatively low particles containing nitrate compared to those containing sulfate and chloride were found in AD event. Micro-PIXE elemental maps indicated that a large number of AD particles were internally mixed with man-made zinc. The highest peaks of EC and OC concentrations were appeared at $0.01-0.43{\mu}m$ particle aerodynamic diameter. High EC concentration in $PM_1$ was might be caused by the Saemangeum Seawall Project that was being conducted during our field measurement.

  • CCD(Charge-Coupled Device) wafer와 같이 표면이 polymer 성분의 micro lens로 구성되어있는 경우 passivation 막을 도포하지 않는 것이 보통인데, 이때 particle이 lens 표면에 쉽게 달라붙는 현상이 나타나게 된다. 특히 sawing 하면서 발생하는 particle은 치명적인 불량을 유발한다. 본 연구에서는 sawing에서 발생한 particle을 효과적으로 flushing하기위한 방안으로 측면노즐과 중심노즐의 분사위치, 분사각도, 퍼짐각도를 최적화 하고, 아울러 flushing 노즐을 추가한 새로운 형태의 wafer saw를 도입하였다. 개선된 saw를 적용하여 실험한 결과 particle로 인한 CCD chip의 불량률이 9.l%로부터 0.63%로 현격하게 개선되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

$n$-Dodecanol 용액에서 저밀도폴리에틸렌 마이크로 입자 결정화에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Crystallization of Low Density Polyethylene Microparticles in $n$-Dodecanol Solution)

  • In this study, we are crystallized to the low density polyethylene (LDPE) micro-particles in $n$-dodecanol solution by thermally induced phase separation(TIPS) method. The Low density polyethylene micro-particles is used in a wide variety of polymer coatings and industrial application. The utility of that for a particular application depends on a number of factors such as the particle size and distribution, and chemical composition of the materials. However, there are still needs for new methods of preparation which will provide the structure with unique sizes. The widely used processes for micro-size particles are crystallization method and thermally induced phase separation. TIPS process based on the phase separation mechanism was performed for the LDPE system which undergoes liquid-solid phase separation. Effects of various operating parameters were examined on the structure variation of the particles. Professionality, take-up speed and crystallization rate depended on temperature and concentration of polymer in solution.

  • Study for toner adhesion is known as an important role in electrophotography. In this research, a centrifugal detachment method was used to measure the adhesion force of several hundred particles simultaneously and to determine its sensitivity to particle size. For uncharged toner particles, we estimated the van der Waals force based on the centrifugal farce experiments. Then for charged toner particles, the centrifugal force experiments were carried out. The difference between the results for charged toner particles and the results for uncharged toner particles was compared with the image force calculated from a model which assumed that the toner charge was located at the center of the particle. In the calculations, experimental data obtained by E-SPART (Electrical- Single Particle Aerodynamic Relaxation Time) analyzer were used. The adhesion force of micro-sized toner particles deposited on the DR surface was found to be approximately 1${\~}$3 nN.

  • 본 연구에서는 마이크로 크기의 실리콘 입자와 탄소나노튜브를 활용하여 고용량을 갖는 실리콘/탄소나노튜브/탄소 복합입자를 제조하여 리튬이차전지용 음극활물질로서의 적용가능성을 확인하고자 하였다. 실리콘/탄소나노튜브/탄소 복합입자 제조를 위해 분무건조 방식을 이용하여 실리콘입자가 탄소나노튜브에 의해 균일하게 분산되어 비정질탄소로 결합된 구조를 갖는 구형의 복합입자를 제조하였다. 제조한 복합입자는 실리콘 입자 주변에 탄소나노튜브의 네트워크 구조를 형성하며 비정질 탄소에 의해 실리콘 입자와 탄소나노튜브의 입자들이 결합한 상태를 유지하는 구조로 이루어진다. 이러한 복합입자의 구조적인 특성으로 인해 계속적인 충방전 과정에서 실리콘의 부피팽창이 효과적으로 완충되고 이에 따라 전기적 접촉 손실 및 SEI 막 형성에 따른 비가역 반응이 제어되어 우수한 수명 특성 및 충전출력 특성을 갖는 것으로 나타난다.

나노-마이크로 크기 하이브리드 구조 텅스텐 분말특성에 미치는 분말혼합 공정의 영향 (Effect of Powder Mixing Process on the Characteristics of Hybrid Structure Tungsten Powders with Nano-Micro Size)

  • The effect of the mixing method on the characteristics of hybrid-structure W powder with nano and micro sizes is investigated. Fine $WO_3$ powders with sizes of ${\sim}0.6{\mu}m$, prepared by ball milling for 10 h, are mixed with pure W powder with sizes of $12{\mu}m$ by various mixing process. In the case of simple mixing with ball-milled $WO_3$ and micro sized W powders, $WO_3$ particles are locally present in the form of agglomerates in the surface of large W powders, but in the case of ball milling, a relatively uniform distribution of $WO_3$ particles is exhibited. The microstructural observation reveals that the ball milled $WO_3$ powder, heat-treated at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 h in a hydrogen atmosphere, is fine W particles of ~200 nm or less. The powder mixture prepared by simple mixing and hydrogen reduction exhibits the formation of coarse W particles with agglomeration of the micro sized W powder on the surface. Conversely, in the powder mixture fabricated by ball milling and hydrogen reduction, a uniform distribution of fine W particles forming nano-micro sized hybrid structure is observed.
