A numerical study has been conducted to investigate the effect of an inlet flow pulsation on mixing of two solutions with different concentrations in a micro conduit. We treat an unsteady, incompressible and two-dimensional flow through a micro conduit by adopting the momentum equations with the electrostatic force due to streaming current and the concentration equation. The feasibility of the inlet flow pulsation to enhance the mixing process inside the micro conduit is carefully examined by varying the inlet pulsation frequency. When a low-frequency pulsation is induced at the inlet, the interface between two solutions with different concentrations becomes wavy, which results in mixing enhancement. As the pulsation frequency increases, the waviness of the interface becomes meager, and the concentration gradients at the interface approach the value for the non-pulsating steady flow.
This study is about how to lower the driving voltage that enables to move the micro droplet by the EWOD (Electro Wetting On Dielectric) mechanism. EWOD is well known that it is used ${\mu}-TAS$ digital micro fluidics system. As the device which is fabricated with dielectric layer between electrode and micro droplet is applied voltage, the hydrophobic surface is changed into the hydrophilic surface by electrical property. Therefore, EWOD induces the movement of micro droplet with reducing contact angle of micro droplet. The driving voltage was depended on the dielectric constant of dielectric layer, thus it can be reduced by increase of dielectric constant. Typically, very high voltage ($100V{\sim}$) is used to move the micro droplet. In previous study, we used $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ as the dielectric layer and driving voltage was 23V that reduced 24 percent compared with $SiO_2$. In this study, we used $BZN(Bi_{2}O_{3}ZnO-Nb_{2}O_{5})$ layer which had high dielectric constant. It was operated the just 12V. And micro droplet was moved within Is on 15V. It was reduced the voltage until 35 percents compare with $Ta_{2}O_{5}$ and 50 percents compare with $SiO_2$. The movement of micro droplet within 1s was achieved with BZN (ferroelectrics)just on 15V.
Recently, analyzing system is studying for applying to biomedical engineering field, actively. Micro fluidics control system has been manufactured using LIGA (Lithographie Galvanoformung und Abformung), Etching, Lithography and Laser etc. However, it is difficult that above-mentioned methods are applied to fabrication of precision mold master efficiently because of long processing time and rising cost of equipments. Therefore, in this study, micro EDM and micro WEDG system were developed to analyze machining characteristics with tool wear, surface roughness and process time. Then, optimal machining conditions could be obtained from the results of analysis. As the results, mold master of staggered herringbone mixer which has a high mixing efficiency, one of passive mixer of Lab-on-a-chip, could be fabricated from micro pattern(< 50um) using micro EDM successfully.
Micropump is very useful component in micro/nano fluidics and bioMEMS applications. Using the flexural vibration mode of PZT bar, a piezopump is successfully made. The PZT bar is polarized with thickness direction. The proposed structure for the piezo-pump consists of an input and an output port, piezoelectric ceramic actuator, actuator support, diaphragm. The traveling flexural wave along the bar is obtained by dividing two standing waves which are temporally and spatially phase shifted by 90 degrees from each other. Fluid is drawn into a forming chamber, eventually the forming chamber closes trapping the fluid therein.

Micro structures which are widely used at various fields are commonly fabricated by lithograph, etching and laser methods. Recently, with the emergence of micro tools and ultra-precision machine tools, fabrication of the micro structures obtained using end-milling are studied. However, there are some problems due to the diameter of the micro end-mill getting smaller below $100{\mu}m$. The micro run-out resulted from miniaturization of end-mills have influence seriously on accuracy of micro structures. The error of run-out with a tooling jig showed a decrease of about $9.3{\mu}m$. Furthermore, micro structures with width of $30{\mu}m$ could be applied through experiments of slot machining obtained using 30 and $50{\mu}m$ end-mill. Also, narrow angle structures with $30^{\circ}$ angle could be applied through analysis of machining acute angle structures. Based on basic experiments, micro fluidics channels and spiral patterns for air bearing were machined.
Micro trench structures are applied in gratings, security films, wave guides, and micro fluidics. These micro trench structures have commonly been fabricated by micro electro mechanical system (MEMS) process. However, if the micro trench structures are machined using a diamond tool on large area plate, the resulting process is the most effective manufacturing method for products with high quality surfaces and outstanding optical characteristics. A nonferrous metal has been used as a workpiece; recently, and hybrid materials, including polymer materials, have been applied to mold for display fields. Thus, the machining characteristics of polymer materials should be analyzed. In this study, machining characteristics were compared between nonferrous metals and polymer materials using single crystal diamond (SCD) tools; the use of such materials is increasing in machining applications. The experiment was conducted using a square type diamond tool and a shaper machine tool with cutting depths of 2, 4, 6 and 10 ${\mu}m$ and a cutting speed of 200 mm/s. The machined surfaces, chip, and cutting force were compared through the experiment.
There is a great demand to manipulate biological cell autonomously since biologist should spend much time to obtain skillful manipulation techniques. For this purpose, we propose a cell chip to control, carry, fix and locate the cell. In this paper, we focus on the cell rotator to rotate individual biological cell based on a micro fluidics technology. The cell rotator consists of injection hole and rotation well to rotate a biological cell properly. Under the variation of flow rate in injection hole, the angular velocity of a biological cell is evaluated to find the feasibility of the proposed rotation method. As a practical experiment, Zebrafish egg is employed. Based on this research, we find the possibility of non-contact rotation way that can highly reduce the damage of the biological cell during manipulation. To realize an autonomous biological cell manipulation, a cell chip with manipulation well and micro channel in this research will be utilized effectively in near future.

Components of piezopump were made, assembled, and tested to validate the concepts of the proposed pump and confirm the simulation results. The performance of the proposed piezopump the highest pressure level of 83.4kHz.

This paper reports the design, modeling, fabrication and measurement of passive microvalves, which are applicable to glaucoma implants. The proposed microvalves were designed using fluidic theory. The microvalves consisted of microchannels and chambers. The microchannels had a constant fluidic resistance generating a pressure difference. Six kinds of microvalves were designed using fluidic equations for laminar flow and fabricated to examine the influences of chamber size, channel length and the shape of channel cross section. The pressure difference between the designed microvalve and the fabricated microvalve was measured to be less than 4%.

Microsystem technology (MST) which originated from semiconductor processes has been widely spreaded into tile other industry such as sensors, micro fluidics and displays. The MST, however. has been troubled in spreading with its high cost and material limitations. So, in this paper, new process for micromolding technology using silicone rubber mold was introduced. Silicone rubber mold, which was fabricated by vacuum casting. can be transferred a master pattern to a final product with the same shape but different materials. In order to verify the possibility of application of silicone rubber mold to the MST, its transferability was evaluated. and then it applied to the fabrications of polishing pad and PDP barrier ribs.
