The rice's waste byproduct is known as a rice bran and produced annually about 400,000 to 600,000 tons. Most of the rice bran are used as a livestock feed or waste disposal, and needed to be used to produce high-added substances, such as bioactive materials. In this study, extraction conditions of the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of the rice bran were optimized using a statistically-based optimization. The influence of extraction variables including the extraction time ($X_1$), extraction temperature ($X_2$) and ethanol concentration ($X_3$) were investigated using the response surface methodology in order to determine optimum extraction conditions which maximize total phenolic compounds (TPC), total flavonoid compounds (TFC) and electron donating abilities (EDA). The optimal UAE from rice bran was achieved under the extraction temperature of $94.9^{\circ}C$, extraction time of 41.6 minute and ethanol concentration of 74.0% (v/v) with maximum yields of TPC 2.78 mg GAE/g DM, TFC 1.63 mg QE/g DM and EDA 42.86%. The UAE process shows its potential to the extraction of bioactive and antioxidant compounds from rice bran in a short extraction time and low temperature. Also, it is proposed that rice bran could be considered as food additives and cosmeceutical products.
Velvet antler (VA) is a historically traditional medicinal supplement and is well known in Asian countries for its pharmaceutical and health benefits. The objectives for this study were to optimize the hot water extraction (HWE) of VA for the Korean VA industry, and to determine the most effective pretreatment method among microwave (MW), ultrasonication (US), and enzymatic (EZ) techniques. Using response surface methodology, optimum extraction temperatures and times were determined by central composite design configuration based on extraction yield and sialic acid content. Various quality parameters of VA extract including yield, soluble solid, protein, and sialic acid contents were also compared with the conjunction of HWE and pretreatment. The yield and sialic acid content of VA extract were determined to be 40% and 0.73 mg/g, respectively, under an optimum temperature of 100℃ at 24 h of extraction time. The yields from VA extracts pretreated with MW, US, and EZ were 17.42%, 19.73%, and 29.15%, respectively. Among the tested commercial enzymes, pepsin was the most effective proteolytic enzyme and led to the highest yield (47.65%), soluble solids (4.03 °brix), protein (1.12 mg/ml), and sialic acid (3.04 mg/ml) contents from VA extract.
In this study, ginseng flower water extracts were analyzed to set up the ginsenoside content and quality optimization condition. The highest total ginsenoside content among the ginseng flower water extracts was 67.44mg/g which was extracted at $85^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. In addition, the ginsenoside content decreased according to the increased extraction temperature and time. The highest total content of $Rb_2$ and Re was 37.42mg/g at $75^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours. Total content of $Rb_2$ and Re decreased according to the increased extraction temperature and time. The highest prosapogenin ($Rg_2$ + $Rg_3$ + $Rh_1$) content among the total of ginseng flower water extracts was 18.58mg/g which was extracted at $95^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours. The sweetness, absorbance were increased according to the increased extraction temperature and time. But pH was decreased according to the increased extraction time.

The influence of extraction time on the fatty acid profile and the contents of calcium and magnesium in pig's shank were examined. The 9 kinds of fatty acid were identified in water extracts from pig's shank by GLC. The profiles of fatty acids from different extraction were similer to each other,. The content of linolenic acid was increased after two-hours extraction however the amounts of MUFA, PUFA and p/s ratio were decreased by the longer extraction time. The amount of calcium was 124.7mg% in raw materials but water extracts and bone powder samples showed higher values. in case of magnesium it was 138.4mg% in raw materials, but the extracts showed lower amount and bone powder exhibited higher values.
Anti-oxidative activities of Heracleum moellendorffii Hance extracts were measured after extraction with 50% (v/v) ethanol or water (at $80^{\circ}C$ or $20^{\circ}C$). The total polyphenol content was highest (64.73 mg GAE/g) in extract from 50% ethanol extraction at $80^{\circ}C$. In extracts obtained by water extraction at $80^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$, the total polyphenol contents were 39.78 mg GAE/g and 23.17 mg GAE/g, respectively. The antioxidant activities of the ethanol extract at $80^{\circ}C$ were highest, as assessed by DPPH radical scavenging activity (69.14% at 50 ppm), reducing power (OD 0.93), and $ABTS^+$ radical-scavenging activity (85.62% at 1,000 ppm). At $80^{\circ}C$, the antioxidant activity of the 50% (v/v) ethanol extract was 8-20% higher than that of the water extract. Also, the chemical composition of extract from ethanol extraction at $80^{\circ}C$ was analyzed. The levels of moisture, crude protein, crude fat, and crude ash were 6.38%, 4.35%, 0.67%, and 1.96%, (all w/w), respectively. The Na, K, Mg, Zn, Fe, Ca, and P contents of the extract were 53.41, 398.26, 5.80, 0.40, 5.27, 3.56, and 47.17 mg/100 g, respectively. The total levels of polyphenolic compounds and flavonoids in the ethanol extract were 64.73 mg GAE/g and 49.54 mg RE/g.
Crude papain was extracted from papaya latex under various conditions. Extraction conditions of crude papain were optimized by the response surface methodology (RSM). Extraction yield of papain was affected by concentration of $NaHSO_3$, extraction time and pH. Three independent factors were chosen to determine their effects on the various responses and the function was expressed in terms of a quadratic polynomial equation, which measures the linear, quadratic and interaction effects. According to the results of RSM, the stationary point for quantitatively dependent variable was found to be the maximum point for extraction yield. Optimum conditions of papain extraction were 4% of $NaHSO_3$, 120 min of extraction time and pH 7.6. Under these conditions, 793.16 mg of papain per g latex was extracted from papaya latex.
The objectives of this study were to calculate the radius of influence (ROI) of well for an air-sparging (AS)/soil vapor extraction (SVE) system and to evaluate the applicability of the system applied for the remediation of the petroleum contaminated rail site. For air permeability test, three monitoring wells were installed at a location of 1.3 m, 2.3 m, 3.0 m from the extraction well. And the pressure of each monitoring well was measured by extracting air from the extraction well with the pressure and flow of $(-)2,600mmH_2O$ and $1.58m^3/min$. The ROI for an extraction well was calculated as 4.31 m. Air was injected into the injection well with the pressure and flow of $3,500mmH_2O$ and $0.6m^3/min$ to estimate the radius of influence for oxygen transfer. Oxygen concentrations of air from three monitoring wells were measured. The ROI of an injection well for oxygen transfer was calculated as 3.46 m. The 28 extraction wells and 19 injection wells were installed according to the ROI calculated. The AS/SVE system was operated eight hours a day for five months. The rail site was contaminated with the petroleum and concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene were over the 'Worrisome Standard' of the 'Soil Environment Conservation Act'. The contaminated area was estimated as $732m^2$ and contaminants were dispersed up to (-)3 m from the ground. During the operation period, soil samples were collected from 5 points and analyzed periodically. With the AS/SVE system operation, concentrations of benzene, toluene, and xylene were decreased from 7.5 mg/kg to 2.0 mg/kg, from 32.0 mg/kg to 23.0 mg/kg, from 35.5 mg/kg to 23.0 mg/kg, respectively. The combined AS/SVE system applied to the rail site contaminated with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) exhibited a high applicability. But the concentration of contaminants in soil were fluctuated due to the heterogeneous of soil condition. Also the effect of the remediation mechanisms was not clearly identified.
The physiological properties of water extracts from Hizikia fusiformis extracted using different extraction methods (water extraction, WE; autoclave extraction, AE; high pressure extraction, HPE) were investigated. The freeze-dried powder yields from HPE, AE and WE were 29.33, 27.84 and 23.63%, respectively. The $L^*$ and $b^*$ color values were higher in WE, while the $a^*$ color values were higher in WE and AE. The total sugar content of AE (60.14%) was higher than those of WE (47.10%), HPE (40.97%). The reducing sugar content (7.88%) and protein content (42.83%) of AE was higher than those of WE, and HPE. The uronic acid (5.04%), total free amino acid (785.19 mg/g), taurine (19.16 mg/g), aspartic acid (66.63 mg/g), asparagine (204.84 mg/g), alanine (188.87 mg/g) and ammonium chloride (243.91 mg/g) contents, however, were the highest in HPE. Additionally, the crude polysaccharide yield was higher in HPE (4.75%) than in AE and WE, and the crude saccharide (fucose, galactose, glucose, xylose and fucose) yields were higher in AE. It can be concluded that optimum conditions for the efficient extraction of Hizikia fusiformis depending on components are high pressure and a lower temperature than in the typical process.

Five extraction conditions (AE, autoclave extraction; OE, oven extraction; HWSE, hot water and sonication extraction; HWASE, hot water acidified with 0.5% (v/v) acetic acid and sonication extraction; and BE, boiling extraction) were examined to compare the effects of different hot water extraction methods on the antioxidant properties of blueberries. The extraction yields of the AE, OE, HWSE, HWASE, and BE were 7.94%, 8.35%, 8.55% 9.15%, and 8.50%, respectively. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents of AE were 3.47 mg GAE/g and 1.59 mg RE/g, respectively, which were highest centents among others. Those of OE were ranked second to the highest. The total anthocyanin content of HWSE (5.29 mg/g) was significantly higher than that of others whereas that of AE showed the lowest content (0.96 mg/g). The order of ABTS radical and alkyl radical scavenging activities was as follows: AE > BE > OE > HWSE > HWASE. The antioxidant properties were considerably correspondent with the total polyphenol and flavonoid content. DPPH radical scavenging activity was quite high in HWSE, AE, and BE extraction, however, there were no significant differences among the five extraction methods in the aspect of $Fe^{2+}$ ion chelating activities. Moreover, AE showed the highest SOD activity, and protected the dermal fibroblast the best against $H_2O_2$-induced cytotoxicity. In conclusion, it was suggested that the autoclave extraction (AE) would be the most effective method for preparing blueberry hot water extracts with relatively high antioxidant activities.
