This paper is a study on the prevention of crevice corrosion for a stainless steel heat exchanger in various pH solutions and with Cl ion concentrations. The electrochemical polarization test and crevice corrosion test of STS 304 for a heat exchanger were carried out. The crevice corrosion aspect, a passive behavior, crevice corrosion behavior, and corrosion protection characteristics of STS 304 using Al-alloy and Mg-alloy galvanic anode were considered. The main results are as follows: 1. The crevice corrosion of STS 304 occurs in the crevice and this corrosion increases pitting according to depth direction. On the other hand, the exterior crevice becomes passive. 2. With changing from a neutral to acid environment and increasing Cl ion concentration, the pitting potential of STS 304 lowers, and thus the crevice corrosion of STS 304 is sensitive. 3. The cathodic protection potential of STS 304 in the crevice is cathodically polarized by increasing Cl ion concentration. Therefore, an Al-alloy galvanic anode is more suitable than a Mg-alloy galvanic anode to protect the crevice corrosion of STS 304.
For the purpose of applying a hot-dip Zn-6mass%Al-3mass%Mg alloy coated steel sheet (ZAM) to automotive body materials, a laboratory study of the general properties required for inner and outer panels of automotive bodies was performed. Even with only light coating weight, ZAM showed an excellent corrosion resistance in terms of both cosmetic and perforation corrosion compared to the currently used materials for automotive bodies, GI70 and GA45. In our study, it was confirmed that ZAM exhibits as good as or better properties than GI70 in terms of spot weldability and press formability. Furthermore, since the same corrosion resistance can be achieved with less coating weight by applying ZAM, laser weldability is better than GI and GA.
Aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with various amounts of SiC particles have been produced by rheo-compocasting followed by hot extrusion. A relatively uniform distribution of SiC particles in the composites was obtained. The amounts of pore and SiC particles cluster were relatively small in the composites. Particle free zones were observed in the hot extruded composites when the amount of SiC particles was less than 20 vol%. However, the width of particle free zone decreases with the increase of SiC particle content. Eutectic Si phase play an important role for improving bonding between SiC particle and matrix. Tensile and yield strength increased with the increase of SiC particle content. the strenthening effect of SiC particle addition was effective even at relatively high temperature of 573 K.

Pre-aging heat treatment after solution heat treatment (SHT) of Al-0.4 wt%Mg-1.2 wt%Si-0.1 wt%Mn alloy sheets for auto-bodies was carried out to investigate the effect of pre-aging and its conditions on the bake-hardening response. Mechanical properties were evaluated by a tensile and Vickers hardness test. Microstructural observation was also performed using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). It was revealed that pre-aging treatments play a great role in the bake-hardening response. In addition, it was found that the sphere-shaped nanosized clusters that can directly transit to the needle-shaped ${\beta}$" phase during the paint-bake process, not being dissolved into the matrix, are formed at 343 K. The result, reveals that the dominant factor of the bake-hardening response is the pre-aging temperature rather than the pre-aging time.
We report on the feasibility of producing 6xxx series Al alloy sheets using a combination of twin-roll strip casting and asymmetric rolling. The Al alloy sheets produced in this study exhibited an excellent formability ($\bar{r}=1.2$, ${\Delta}r=0.17$) and mechanical properties (${\sigma}_{TS}{\sim}260MPa$, ${\varepsilon}>30%$), which cannot be feasibly obtained via the conventional technique based on ingot casting and conventional rolling. The enhanced formability as evaluated in terms of $\bar{r}$ and ${\Delta}r$ was clarified by examining the evolution of textures associated with strip casting and subsequent thermo-mechanical treatments. The evaluation of the formability leads us to conclude that the combined technique based on strip casting and asymmetric rolling is a feasible process for enhancing the formability of Al alloy sheets to a level beyond which the conventional technique can reach.
Laser welding with AZ61 filler wire was carried out to improve formability though reduction of porosity and formation of under fill bead. Optimum welding condition and mechanical properties of butt joint for $400{\times}500{\times}1.3mm$ magnesium sheets were studied. Optimal welding conditions of laser power, welding speed, and defocusing length are 1000W, 3m/min, and 2mm, respectively. Results of tensile test indicated that both tensile strength and elongation of specimens welded with filler wire were improved at room temperature because of reduction of porosity and under-filled bead formation in addition to the precipitation hardening and microstructure refinement by Al-Mn and Mg-Al-Zn precipitates. At elevated temperature of $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$, fracture location of tensile specimen was shifted from weld metal to base metal, indicating less softening of weld metal than base metal.
Lanthanum aluminate($LaAlO_3$) film has been prepared on single crystal and metal substrates by dip coating method. Lanthanum acetate and aluminum were prepared via ligand exchange starting from lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate and aluminum nitrate hexahydrate in acetate glacial acetic acid solution after being refluxed. Coating solution was obtained by diluting the gel with methanol and 2-methoxyethanol to adjust the total cation concentration to 0.67 M. Precursor coated film was prepared by dip-coating with a speed of 25 mm/min on various substrates such as $LaAlO_3$ (001), MgO(001), $SrTiO_3$(001) single crystal, LMO/MgO/Ni-alloy. Thin films have been obtained by heat treating the precursor film at various temperatures from $600^{\circ}C{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ and various heating rate from $0.83^{\circ}C/min{\sim}1.25^{\circ}C/min$ under $Ar/O_2$ mixture containing 1000ppm oxygen. The films have been characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis for the prepared film showed that $LaAlO_3$ thin films with a preferred orientation of (100) plane parallel to substrate surface were obtained at $800^{\circ}C(1.11\;^{\circ}C/min)$ on LMO/MgO/Ni-alloy substrate, but the intensity decreased with the increase of heat treatment temperature.
In this study, the gravitating mechanical stir casting method was used to fabricating the Nb2O5/AZ31 magnesium matrix nanocomposites. Niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) used as reinforcement with two different weight percentages (3 wt % and 6 wt %). The influence of Nb2O5 on microstructure and mechanical properties has been investigated. The microstructure analysis showed that the composites are mainly composed of the primary α-magnesium phase and phase β-Mg17Al12 secondary phase. The secondary phase was dispersed evenly along the grain boundary of the Mg phase. The Nb2O5/AZ31 nanocomposites revealed that the grain size and its lamellar shape (β-Mg17Al12) were gradually refined. Different strengthening mechanisms were assessed in terms of their contributions. Results showed that composite material properties of hardness, yield strength, and fracture study were directly related to Nb2O5 as a reinforcement. The maximum values of the mechanical properties were achieved with the addition of 3 wt% Nb2O5 on the AZ31 alloy.
To evaluate anti-corrosion performance of high-frequency arc metal spray film in accordance with metal type and epoxy sealing coat application status, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) method was conducted in this study. As a result, in case of applying Al-Mg alloy metal spray film, it showed the best polarization resistance. In case of applying epoxy sealing coat, it showed increased polarization resistance of arc metal spray film. Through this experiment, it is judged that Al-Mg alloy arc metal spray film with epoxy sealing coat can increase the biggest anti-corrosion performance of high-frequency arc metal spray film on steel.
