  • The autoxidation reaction of L-ascorbic acid(AsA), and, particularly, the oxidation rates of AsA in the presence of Fe(III) or Cu(II) ions were determined in water and methanol. UV spectral measurement (at 265 nm) and HPLC were used to determine the remaining amounts of AsA in water and methanol, respectively. It was found that, in the presence of metal ions, the autoxidation rate of AsA was significantly affected by the kinds of solvents used, and also by the kinds of metal ions present. Moreover, the first-order rate constants for the oxidation of non-dissociated AsA compared with dissociated-AsA were investigated. It was confirmed that the oxidation of AsA was more accelerated in the dissociated form of AsA than in the non-dissociated form of AsA in either with Fe(III) or Cu(II). It was also found that the Cu(II) at a concentration of 0.1 $\mu$M had a more significant effect on the first-order rate constants for the autoxidation of AsA than Fe(III) at 5 $\mu$M.

  • Methylophaga aminisulfidivorans $MP^T$, a restricted facultative marine methylotrophic bacterium, was able to utilize methanol as a sole carbon and energy source, and possessed a methanol dehydrogenase (MDH) that is a key enzyme in the process of methanol oxidation. During purification of MDH, three types of MDH (MDH I, II, and III) were obtained in the cell free extracts from $MP^T$ cells grown on methanol. When analyzed by SDS-PAGE and ESI-FT ICR MS, MDH I was confirmed to consist of two subunits and with molecular masses of ~66 and ~10 kDa, respectively, in a form of ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2$. While MDH II and MDH III contained an additional ~30 kDa protein, designated ${\gamma}$, in a form of ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2{\gamma}$ and ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2{\gamma}_2$, respectively. MDH III showed 1.5.2.0 times higher activity than MDH II, while MDH I remained the lowest activity. Based on these observations and experimental data, it seems that the original MDH conformation is ${\alpha}_2{\beta}_2{\gamma}2$ within $MP^T$ growing on methanol, and subunit ${\gamma}$ keeps MDH in an active form, and/or makes MDH easily bind to the substrate, methanol.

  • The physical and rheological properties of thermoplasticized irradiation-crosslinked polyethylene foam using supercritical methanol treatment were investigated by GPC, FTIR, DSC, WAXS, DMTA and UDS. The polyethylene foam was selectively decrosslinked into thermoplasticized polyethylene in an appropriate supercritical methanol condition without any undesirable side reactions such as oxidation and disproportionation. The thermoplasticization was promoted with increasing reaction temperature to reach completion above $380^{\circ}C$. The supercritical reaction condition affected the crystallization behavior, and mechanical and rheological properties of the decrosslinked polyethylene foam, but not its crystallographic structure or crystallinity.

  • Cobalt oxygen carrier complex N,N'-ethylenebis(3-methoxysalycylideneiminato)cobalt(II), Co(3MeOsalen) was prepared at $25{\circ}C$. UV and visible absorption spectra of the complex and hydrazobenzene were studied in non-aqueous solvent methanol in the range of wavelength 200-600 nm. The oxidation of hydrazobenzene by oxygen in non-aqueous solvent is catalysed by Co(3MeOsalen). In the presence of triphenylphosphine($PPh_3$), the rate decreases in methanol. This is presumably attributable to the coordination of $PPh_3$ to the Co(3MeOsalen), resulting in the catallytically inactive compound. The initial rates of the oxidation of hydrazobenzene with the ligand triphenylphosphine were measured by the theoretical values of the rates, Rate=$k_1+k_2K_1[P]/1+K_1[P]+K_1K_2[P]^2$. This fact would be a poorer σ-donor ligand than methanol.

  • We report on the electrocatalytic activities at Pt nanostructure surfaces electrodeposited with different deposition charges on indium tin oxide electrodes for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reactions. The surface properties of Pt nanostructures depending on deposition charges were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical surface area measurement, X-ray diffraction, and CO stripping analysis, which were correlated to the electrocatalytic activities. Pt nanostructures with deposition charge of 0.03 C exhibited the highest electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation. The sharp sites of Pt nanostructure and the presence of highly active facet play a key role, whereas the electrochemical surface area does not significantly affect the electrocatalytic activity. The results obtained in this work with regard to the dependence of electrocatalytic activity on the variation of the Pt nanostructures will give insights into the development of advanced electrocatalytic systems.

  • Direct methanol fuel cell based on a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte was investigated. 60% Pt-Ru/C and 60%Pt/C catalysts were employed for methanol oxidation and oxygen reduction, respectively. Morphologies of the catalysts were investigated by x-ray power diffraction, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and transmission microscopy. Electrochemical characteristics of the catalysts were tested by using cyclic voltametry technique. I-V characteristics of the fuel cell were tested by changing methanol concentration, temperature, and Nafion type as a proton-exchange membrane electrolyte. AC impedance technique was used to investigate the electrochemical performance of the fuel cell. The performance of single cell was enhance with increasing cell temperature. High operation temperature attributed to the combined effects of the reduction of ohmic resistance and polarization. High cell voltage was obtained from the concentration of 205M methanol. With Nafion 112, a current density of $230mA/cm^2$ at 0.55V was obtained from the concentration of 2.5M methanol.

  • Pt-Sn with various ratios was supported on carbon black after pretreatment in an acidic solution by a reduction method. The Pt/Sn ratio was controlled by varying the concentration of each component in the solution, and the influence of the composition on the electrocatalytic activities was investigated. The crystallinity of the synthesized materials was investigated by XRD (X-ray Diffraction), and the oxidation states of both the platinum and tin were determined by XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy). SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy)-EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) was utilized to examine the morphology and composition of the synthesized electrode, and the particle size of the Pt-Sn was analyzed by TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy). The electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction was evaluated in a 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution using a rotating disk electrode system. The activity and stability were found to be strongly dependent on the electrode composition (Pt/Sn ratio). The catalytic activity and stability for methanol oxidation were also measured using cyclic voltammetry (CV) in a mixture of 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ and 0.5 M $CH_3OH$ aqueous solution. The addition of proper amount of Sn was found to significantly improve both catalytic activity and stability for methanol oxidation.

  • Isatis indigotica is commonly used as traditional chinese medicine for antipyretic, antiviral, and detoxifying purpose in China. In order to examine whether it prevents lipid peroxidation, root of Isatis indigotica was extracted with methanol and fractionated with hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water. The activity was evaluated by DPPH method and lipid peroxidation in rat liver homogenate and C $u^{++}$ -induced oxidated LDL. The results showed that ethyl acetate fraction and indigo, which is known as its constituent, had significantly anti-lipid peroxidative effects.s.
