  • A cylindrical constant volume combustion bomb is used to investigate the combustion characteristics and to analyze the heat quantity of homogeneous charge methane-air mixture under various initial pressures, excess air ratios and ignition times. As the overall pressure increase, the values of maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release have been increased. But it is not very meaningful to compare with some values such as maximum combustion pressure, maximum heat release rate and cumulative heat release for different overall pressure due to the different heat energy of supplied fuel. So the each value is needed to be compared with normalized value, which is divided by the entered fuel energy. To analyze the heat quantity, some definitions including the CHR ratio, the UHC ratio and the HL ratio are needed and are calculated. As the overall pressure increase, the CHR ratios and the UHC ratios have been decreased, while the HL ratios have been increased. The CHR ratio of 300 ms has the higher value than that of 10000ms, and the HL ratios of 300 ms have a lower value.

  • The plate reformer consisting of combustion chamber and reforming chamber for 25 kW MCFC stack has been operated and computational fluid dynamics was applied to estimate reactions and thermal fluid behavior in the reformer. The methane air 2-stage reaction was assumed in the combustion chamber, and three step steam reforming reactions were included in the calculation. Flow uniformity, reaction rate and species distribution, and temperature distribution were analyzed. In particular, temperature distribution was compared with the measurements to show good agreement in the combustion chamber, however, inappropriate agreement in the reformer chamber.

  • Solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) makes electric power using hydrogen or reformed from methane and emits high temperature products that contain flammable species like hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methane which varies with operation condition. SOFC/gas turbine integrated system which uses thermal and chemical energy of the discharges is more efficient than SOFC itself. Burning character of the SOFC products will affect the efficiency and stability of the system. Experiments were conducted to know the characteristics of the flame for two typical composition of SOFC products, i.e. start-up and steady state composition. When coflowing air temperature was higher than $600^{\circ}C$, auto-ignitin occurred for both fuels. Though start-up fuel has higher contents of hydrogen, it makes longer flame than steady state composition. It was inferred that the amount of oxidizer necessary to burn makes this phenomenon. Steady state composition fuel was unstable since it contains lots of water. Nozzle that had 6 holes, distance between each hole was 16.7 times of hole diameter, improved the stability of the flame.

  • Radiation effects on the partially premixed methane flames diluted with water vapor in the air stream were numerically investigated. OPPDIF code and GRI-v3.0 were used in the numerical simulation. Adiabatic condition was compared with two different radiation models, optically-thin and WSGGM models. It was found that the radiation effect on the flame structure for the equivalence ratio (${\Phi}$) of 2.5 was less than ${\Phi}=1.5$. Extinction limit was not affected significantly, however, local flame structure was markedly influenced by the radiation models as increasing the water vapor concentration.

  • The effects of velocity boundary conditions on the structure of methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames were investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulation. Two low global strain rates, 12 s$\^$-1/ and 20 s$\^$-1/, were considered for comparison with measurements. Buoyancy was conformed to have strong effects on the flame structure at a low global strain rate. It was shown that the location where a top hat velocity profile was imposed is sensitive to the flame structure, and that the computed temperature along the centerline agrees well with the measurements when plug flow was imposed at the inner surface of the screen nearest the duct exit.

  • To measure laminar burning velocity in methane/air/ethylene mixture flame, propagating centrally ignited spherical premixed flame to radial direction was measured by high-speed schlieren images with elevated pressure. In this study, The experimentally measured unstretched laminar burning velocities of methane was compared with GRI mech 3.0 to validate experimental data and choose the radius range, respectively. numerical prediction using the PREMIX code with GRI mech 3.0, USC mech II,, and Wang mech were evaluated through comparison with experimental burning velocity with consideration of extrapolation on linear/nonlinear model.

  • An experimental study was conducted to scrutinize the influence of the frequency of an ultrasonic standing wave on the variation in the behavior of a methane-air premixed flame. The evolutionary features of the propagating flame were captured by a high-speed camera, and the macroscopic flame behavior, including the flame structure and local velocities, was investigated in detail using a post-processing analysis of the high-speed images. It was found that a structural variation and propagation-velocity augmentation of the methane-air premixed flame were caused by the intervention of the ultrasonic standing wave, which enhanced the combustion reaction. Conclusive evidence for the dependency of the flame behaviors on the driving frequency of the ultrasonic standing wave and equivalence ratio of the reactants is presented.

  • Burning velocities of conventional methane flame and oxygen-enriched methane flame were determined by experimentally and numerically at atmospheric pressure in order to examine the validity of various detailed reaction mechanisms in oxygen-enriched flame. The schlieren system was adopted to obtain the burning velocity of flame stabilized on a circular nozzle. Premix code was employed to compute the burning velocity. Three reaction mechnisms were tested at several oxygen enrichment level, whose names are GRI 3.0, MB(Miller and Bowman) and LKY(Lee Ki Yong) reaction mechanism. Sensitivity analysis was also performed to discriminate dominantly affecting reaction on burning velociy. The results showed that conventional reaction mechanisms originally based on methane-air flame were underpredict the burning velocity at high oxygen-enrichment level. The modified GRI 3.0 reaction mechanism based on our experimental results was suggested and shows a good agreement in estimating the burning velocity and the NO number density of oxygen-enriched flame.

  • An experimental results on the dynamic characteristics of hydrocarbon/air premixed flames with ultrasonic standing waves are presented and compared. Images of the propagating flames were acquired by using a high-speed camera, and the flame behavior of methane/air and propane/air premixed flame were closely scrutinized through the image post-processing. At the fuel-lean conditions, the flame propagation velocity increased due to the intervention of the ultrasonic standing wave and vice versa at the fuel-rich conditions.

  • Burned gas of methane-air mixtures with water vapor have been analysed to study the exhaust emission using gas-chromatography and computation. The computations were carried out for the gas analysis using premix code of Chemkin program to compare the experimental results. The quantity of water vapor contained were changed 5% and 10% of total mixtures, and equivalence ratio of mixtures between 0.6 and 1.2 were tested under the ambient temperature 323K and 373K. The results showed CO, $CO_2$ decreased and $H_2$ increased by increasing the water contents. The CO increased and $CO_2$ decreased by increasing the ambient temperature. The $CO_2$ shows the maximum product at equivalence ratio 1.0, in otherwise the $CH_4$ produced the minimum values in the same range. The results showed little difference between these two methods.
