  • This study investigated how elementary students with different spatial ability constructed spatial thinking process about on volcanoes and earthquakes with GeoMapApp-based materials. Students' spatial thinking process was analyzed in terms of spatial concept recognized, tools of spatial representation, and their spatial reasoning to construct topographic structure. The student group with high-scored spatial ability showed the spatial reasoning based on internal representation of building mental images through sectional division of horizontal distance, directly connected with spatial concept, or distorting spatial concept. The student group with low-scored spatial ability built the spatial reasoning directly connected with spatial concept instead of transforming into internal representation, and partially recognized spatial concept on either distance or depth. Based on the results, we argued identifying spatial concepts such as distance, height, or depth from the GeoMapApp data would be funda- mental for the better spatial thinking.

  • Various web browsers offer mouse gesture functions because they are convenient input methods. Mouse gestures enable users to move to the previous page or tab without clicking its relevant icon or menu of the web browser. To maximize the efficiency of mouse gestures, they should be designed to match users' mental models. Mental models of human beings are used to make accurate predictions and reactions when certain information has been recognized by humans. This means providing users with appropriate information about mental models will lead to fast understanding and response. A cognitive response test was performed in order to evaluate whether the mouse gestures easily associate with their respective functional meanings or not. After extracting mouse gestures which needed improvement, those were redesigned to reduce cognitive load via sketch maps. The methods presented in this study will be of help for evaluating and designing mouse gestures.

  • In this study, tests of brain waves were carried out to investigate the physiological characteristics of drivers during a change of headlight brightness. The participants were 20 males in their 20s. Twenty-three different conditions combining the waveform of light, voltage, and alteration time were used. The measurement of brain waves was performed by an internationally standardized 10-20 method using LXE3232-RF. The results were as follows. 1. From the results of the brain wave map analysis, it was suggested that waveform A increases mental stress and waveform B affects mental and visual stress. The longer the stimulation time, the more stress level was detected. 2. The voltage alteration time of the B waveform should be kept to less than 1500msec, while the voltage should not fall below 11.5[V].

  • This study investigated the effect of generative concept maps according to learning achievements and cognitive load. A total of 78 students in the first grade of middle school participated in this study. Before the experimental treatment was implemented, students had to fill out a questionnaire assessing prior knowledge. The study was designed where all the students were presented the same learning contents regarding photosynthesis; however, the two experimental groups were provided with different concept map methods: a learner-generative concept map (GCM) and an instructor-provided concept map (PCM). GCM students were asked to make a concept map by themselves in small groups while they are reading material. PCM students were instructed to study in small groups in order to read the material; however, they were provided a concept map developed by their teacher. The control group (CG) had the teacher present the learning contents in traditional lecture format with no accompanying concept map. The results show that there were significant differences in the achievements among the groups. CG showed higher achievement than both the experimental groups. There was also a significant difference in cognitive load. Although the GCM group did not obtain higher achievement than the other groups, the GCM group showed higher mental effort and lower physical fatigue than the other groups. The GCM group might have invested more effort to find and connect ideas when drawing their concept map with peers which is unlike the conditions for the PCM group and CG. In conclusion, we should consider applying GCM in teaching and learning design in order to increase learning achievement and decrease extraneous cognitive load.

  • Hwaseong serial murders are not now having any significant concern either with Hwaseong City or Dongtan New Town, a region in Hwaseong City, both spatial and temporal manners. However, despite that, people have come to see Hwaseong City with negative ideas as the mass media drove the people to do so. In this study, how films and newspaper articles have created those negative images of Hwaseong City was investigated and afterwards, residents and students living in Dongtan New Town had interviews on what they think about the negative regional images. The study, then, worked on a mental map and others based on what it learned from the interviews. Regional identity confusion is now being discovered out of the people's resistance against the negative images of the city and through such research process described before, the study discussed this regional identity confusion caused by living as residents in Hwaseong and living as residents in Dongtan New Town. In addition, the study revealed sense of place of Dongtan New Town and aspects of the regional identity confusion with this Dongtan New Town growing both with symbolic meanings as a place of murders, an awful crime, and spatial meanings as another place of dynamic developments and improvements.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out users' preference of the shares community space(SCS) for the Community Design. For this, it was analyzed the residents' behavior characteristics of the current multi-family housing and the residents' needs of the SCS. This study focused on seeking out the user-oriented design criteria for the planning of the SCS. The survey was carried out with a structured questionnaire including sketch map from Aug. 13, 2001 to Sept. 14, 2001. The subjects were housewives who's living in Haeuondae of Busan, Korea. Total number of 650 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Especially 439 cases among them were used for analysis of mental map. The SPSS PC+ was used for the analysis of data. The results of this study are as follows : First, as to the users' behavior for the SCSs, there is a difference in the location of residents' activities by contents of them. And, the range of these locations categorized according to levels of spacial cognition for neighborhoods. Second, as to the analysis of the SCS through a mental maps, it was shown that the residents' pathway and the residents' location are main variables to be considered in the SCS planning. The preferred location of SCS is organized according to the character of the SCS; the one for most residents, is located the surrounding of main enterance or the center of the housing complex, and the one the neighbors living in the same or the near building is located in area of the block of resident buildings. Third, as the results of residents' needs analysis, the SCS has the meaning of community facilities. And there is a difference in the degree of necessity and in the preferred location according to character of the SCS. In detal, for the indoor SCS of a resident building, there is a difference in the preferred location according to the kinds of each SCS. And for the outdoor SCS, it is necessary to divide the planning zone of the SCS into 3 steps(the resident building, the block of resident buildings, and the housing complex).

  • Purpose: This study purposed to analyze the spatial accessibility of mental health institutions in Ganwon-Do using Geographic Information System and to suggest policy implications. Methodology: Network analysis was applied to assess the spatial accessibility of mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. To perform the network analysis, network data set was built using administrative district map, road network, address of mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. After building network data set, Two network analysis methods, 1) Service area analysis, 2) Origin Destination cost matrix were applied. Service area analysis calculated accessive areas that were within specified time. And using Origin Destination cost matrix, travel time and road travel distance were calculated between centroids of Eup, Myeon, Dong and the nearest mental health institutions. Result: After the service area analysis, it is estimated that 19.63% of the total areas in Gangwon-Do takes more than 60 minutes to get to clinic institutions. For hospital institutions, 23.08% of the total areas takes more than 60 minutes to get there. And 59.96% of Gangwon-do takes more than 30 minutes to get to general hospitals. The result of Origin-Destination cost matrix showed that most Eup Myeon Dong in Gangwon-Do was connected to the institutions in Wonju-si, Chuncheon-si, Gangneung-si. And it showed that there were large regional variation in time and distance to reach the institutions. Implication: Results showed that there were regional variations of spatial accessibility to the mental health institutions in Gangwon-Do. To solve this problem, Several policy interventions could be applied such as mental health resources allocation plan, telemedicine, providing more closely coordinated services between mental health institutions and community mental health centers to enhance the accessibility.

  • Deformation mechanism map of Langdon-Mohammed type for YBa2Cu3O7-x superconducting ceramic was constructed by considering mechanisms of Nabarro-Herring Coble and powder-law creep and grain boundary sliding (GBS) with an accommodation by grain boundary diffusion. The map was found consistent with experi-mental results not only of the creep the also of the superplastic deformation. It showed the transition from interface reaction-controlled to the grain boundary diffusion-controlled GBS mechanism at about 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ grain size and 100 MPa flow stress in agreement with the experimental results.

  • Constitutional interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 5 (5q) are quite rare, and the corresponding phenotype is not yet clearly delineated. Severe mental retardation has been described in most patients who present 5q deletions. Specifically, the interstitial deletion of chromosome 5q33.3q35.1, an extremely rare chromosomal aberration, is characterized by mental retardation, developmental delay, and facial dysmorphism. Although the severity of mental retardation varies across cases, it is the most common feature described in patients who present the 5q33.3q35.1 deletion. Here, we report a case of a de novo deletion of 5q33.3q35.1, 46,XY,del(5)(q33.3q35.1) in an 11-year-old boy with mental retardation; to the best of our knowledge this is the first case in Korea to be reported. He was diagnosed with severe mental retardation, developmental delay, facial dysmorphisms, dental anomalies, and epilepsy. Chromosomal microarray analysis using the comparative genomic hybridization array method revealed a 16-Mb-long deletion of 5q33. 3q35.1(156,409,412-172,584,708)x1. Understanding this deletion may help draw a rough phenotypic map of 5q and correlate the phenotypes with specific chromosomal regions. The 5q33.3q35.1 deletion is a rare condition; however, accurate diagnosis of the associated mental retardation is important to ensure proper genetic counseling and to guide patients as part of long-term management.
