As environmental regulations become more stringent, water, used either as drinking water or as industrial process water, becomes increasingly better in its quality. As a result, an increasingly more advanced water treatment technology is required. It is believed that membrane technology will be able to satisfy such a requirement. The heart of the membrane technology is membrane. The advancement in water treatment technology using membranes, therefore, depends on the development of novel membranes which are superior in performance to the currently available membranes. In this paper, a brief review will be made how the recent progress in surface science, such as surface modification and surface characterization, has aided to improve the performance of the membranes used for water treatment. Some suggestions will also be made regarding the future direction of the research in this area.
The membrane requires both high in selectivity and flux. However, the permselective membrane has low flux. In this study, the porous alumina membrane was coated with silane coupling agent in order to enhance the flux with proper selectivity. The contact angle of water to the surface-modified alumina membrane was greater than 90$^{\circ}$, which indicated the high hydrophobicity. The modified membrane was tested in vapor permeation for the concentration of aqueous ethanol, isopropanol, and n-butanol. With the increase of ethanol, isopropanol, butanol concentration in the feed, permeation flux increased due to the greater affinity of ethanol, isopropanol, butanol with surface-modified alumina membrane than that of water. The experimental results showed that the permeation tate of surface-modified alumina membrane was 20~1000 times greater than that of a polymer membranes.

A Pd-based hydrogen membranes for hydrogen purification and separation need high hydrogen perm-selectivity. The surface roughness of the support is important to coat the pinholes free and thin-film membrane over it. Also, The pinholes drastically decreased the hydrogen perm-selectivity of the Pd-based composite membrane. In order to remove the pinholes, we introduced various surface pre-treatment such as alumina powder packing, nickel electro-plating and micro-polishing pre-treatment. Especially, the micro-polishing pretreatment was very effective in roughness leveling off the surface of the porous nickel support, and it almost completely plugged the pores. Fine Ni particles filled surface pinholes with could form open structure at the interface of Pd alloy coating and Ni support by their diffusion to the membrane and resintering. In this study, a $4{\mu}m$ surface pore-free Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy membrane on a porous nickel substrate was successfully prepared by micro-polishing, high temperature sputtering and Cu-reflow process. And $H_2$ permeation and $N_2$ leak tests showed that the Pd-Cu-Ni ternary alloy hydrogen membrane achieved both high permeability of $13.2ml{\cdot}cm^{-2}{\cdot}min^{-1}{\cdot}atm^{-1}$ permation flux and infinite selectivity.

Membrane structure is a system that is stabilized by maintaining a tensile state of the membrane material that originally cannot resist the bending or pressure. Also, it is a system that allows the whole membrane structure to bear external loads caused by wind or precipitation such as snow, rain and etc. Tension relaxation phenomenon can transpire to the tension that is introduced to the fabric over time, due to the innate characteristics of the membrane material. Thus, it is important to accurately understand the size of the membrane tension after the completion of the structures, for maintenance and management purposes. The authors have proposed the principle of theoretically and indirectly measuring the tension by vibrating the membrane surface with sound waves exposures against the surface, which is compartmentalized by a rectangular boundary, and by measuring the natural frequency of the membrane surface that selectively resonates. The authors of this paper measured the tension of preexisting membrane structure for its maintenance by using the developed portable measurement equipment. Through analyzing the measurement data, the authors review the points that should be improved and the technical method for the new maintenance system of membrane tension.

With the rapid increase in seawater desalination, the importance of boron rejection is rising. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of hydrophilic compounds on surface modification to maximize water flux and increase boron rejection. First, polyamide active layer was fabricated by interfacial polymerization of polysulfone ultrafiltration membrane with M-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) to obtain Control polyamide membrane. Next, D-gluconic acid (DGCA) and D-gluconic acid sodium salt (DGCA-Na) were synthesized with glutaraldehyde (GA) and hydrochloric acid (HCl) by modifying the surface of Control polyamide membrane. XPS analysis was carried out for the surface analysis of the synthesized membrane, and it was confirmed that the reaction of surface with DGCA and DGCA-Na compounds was performed. Also, FE-SEM and AFM analysis were performed for morphology measurement, and polyamide active layer formation and surface roughness were confirmed. In the case of water flux, the membrane fabricated by the surface modification had a value of 10 GFD or less. However, the boron rejection of the membranes synthesized with DGCA and DGCA-Na compounds were 94.38% and 94.64%, respectively, which were 12.03 %p and 12.29 %p larger than the Control polyamide membrane, respectively.
High quality drinking water can be produced by membrane separation process. A major problem in the current system is a membrane fouling control. In order to investigate membrane fouling due to E.coll removal, lab scale experiment using MF and UF and semi pilot plant experiment using UV radiation or not was performed. AS a result, the possibility of membrane fouling control by repressing of micro-organism on the membrane surface was clearly verified. But it was not clearly verified in this experiment the combined effect with other factors such as Turbidity, organic and inorganic matters.
We report the novel thin film composite RO membrane modified by graphene oxide. The thin film composite RO membrane was exposed to 2000 mg/l sodium hypochloride; thereafter it was subjected to different graphene oxide concentration ranging from 50 mg/l to 1000 mg/l in water. The resultant membrane was crosslinked with 5000 mg/l N-hydroxysuccinimide. The performance of different membranes were analysed by solute rejection and water-flux measurement. It was found that 100 mg/l graphene oxide exposure followed by 5000 mg/l N-hydroxysuccinimide treatment resulted in the membrane with the highest solute rejection of 97.78% and water-flux of 4.64 Liter per sqm per hour per bar g. The membranes were characterized by contact angle for hydrophilicity, scanning electron micrographs for surface morphology, energy dispersive X-Ray for chemical composition of the surface, Atomic force microscope for surface roughness, ATR-FTIR for chemical structure identification. It was found that the graphene oxide modified membrane increases the salt rejection performance after exposure to high-fouling water containing albumin. Highly hydrophilic, antifouling surface formation with the nanomaterial led to the improved membrane performance. Moreover, the protocol of incorporating nanomaterial by this post-treatment is simple and can be applied to any RO membrane after it is manufactured.

The purpose of this study is to propose the method of determining the initial pneumatic membrane structures surface and stresses and displacements. Tension structure such as pneumatic membrane structures is stabilized by their initial prestress and air pressure. The process to find initial structural overall shape of tension structures produced by initial prestress called shape finding. One of the most important factor for the design of membrane structures is to search initial smooth surface, because unlike steel or concrete building elements which resist loads in bending, all tension structure forces are carried within the surface by membrane stress. The result for initial surface of pneumatic membrane element and maximum displacement in large deformation in analysis is compared with well-known nonlinear numerical method such as Newton-raphson method and dynamic relaxation method
This short review focuses on fouling by proteins and macromolecules in microfiltration/ultrafiltration. First, an experimental system that enables investigation of how the extent of the adsorption of proteins and macromolecules on membrane surfaces contributes to a decrease in filtrate flux in microfiltration/ultrafiltration is described. Using this system, a causal relationship - not a correlation - indicating that adsorption results in a decrease in filtrate flux could be clearly demonstrated in some cases. Second, a hydration structure at the membrane surface that can suppress adsorption is discussed, inspired by biomaterial research. In their hydrated states, polymers with low-fouling properties have water molecules with a particular structure. Finally, some successful examples of the development of low-fouling membranes via surface modification using low-fouling polymers are discussed.

The three main processes involved in the design of stressed membrane surface are surface form-finding, stress analysis and cutting pattern generation. The last process, cutting pattern generation, is considered as a very important procedure in the aspect of the practical design for the fabric membrane surface. In this paper, The cutting pattern generation technique using the geodesic line algorithms is first introduced. And the numerical examples resulting from this technique are presented. Cable elements are used for the approximating membrane surface and two kinds of model, square line and central line model, are used in pattern generation. Finally, a number of different cutting pattern generation for the same membrane surface is carried out and the numerical results are compared each
