Boron is one of the most problematic inorganic pollutants and is difficult to remove in water. Strict standards have been imposed for boron content in water because of their high toxicity at high concentrations. Technologies using membrane processes such as reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) have increasingly been employed in many industrial sectors. In this work, removal of boron from model water solutions was investigated using polyamide reverse osmosis and nanofiltration membranes. RO-AG, RO-SG, NF-90 and NF-HL membranes were used to reduce the boron from model water at different operational conditions. To understand the boron separation properties a characterization of the four membranes was performed by determining the pure water permeability, surface charge and molecular weight cut-off. Thereafter, the effect of feed pressure, concentration, ionic strength, nature of ions in solution and pH on the rejection of boron were studied. The rejection of boron can reach up to 90% for the three membranes AG, SG and NF-90 at pH = 11. The Spiegler-Kedem model was applied to experimental results to determine the reflection coefficient of the membrane ${\sigma}$ and the solute permeability $P_s$.
Chitosan ($\beta$-D-glucosaminan) is chemically prepared from chitin (N-acetyl-$\beta$- D-glucosaminan) which is an unutilized natural resource. We now report on the suitability of the chitosan matrix for use as vehicles for the controlled release of drugs. Salicylic acid and aspirin were used as model drugs in this study. The permeation of salicylic acid in the chitosan membranes was determined in a glass diffusion cell with two compartments of equal volume. Drug release studies on the devices were conducted in a beaker containing 5% sodium hydroxide solution. Partition coefficient (Kd) value for acetate membrane (472) is much greater than that for fluoro-perchlorate chitosan membrane (282). Higher Kd value for acetate chitosan membrane appears to be inconsisstent with the bulk salicylic acid concentration. The permeability constants of fluoro-perchlorate and acetate chisotan membranes for salicylic acid were 3.139 ${\times}10^{-7}cm^2$ min up to 60 min and that of 30% aspirin in the devices was 4.739${\times}10^{-7}cm^2$sec upto 60 min. As the loading dose of aspirin in a chitosan device increased, water up-take of chitosan device increased, but in case of salicylic acid it decreased. The release rate increased with increase in the molecular volume of the drugs. Thses result suggest that the release mechanism may be controlled mainly by diffusion through pores.
PTMSP/LDH composite membranes were prepared by adding 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt% LDH contents to PTMSP. The gas permeability and selectivity for $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, $n-C_4H_{10}$ were investigated as a function of LDH content. As LDH content of PTMSP/LDH composite membranes increased to 5 wt%, the gas permeability for $H_2$ and $N_2$ gradually decreased, while $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability rapidly increased. The gas permeability for $CH_4$ and $C_3H_8$ was found to decrease for the membranes with LDH content range of 0~3 wt%, however increase in the range of 3~5 wt%. As LDH content of PTMSP/LDH composite membranes increased to 5 wt%, the selectivity of membranes gradually increased for $H_2$, $N_2$, $CH_4$, $C_3H_8$, $n-C_4H_{10}$ over $H_2$, $N_2$. However the selectivity for $C_3H_8$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ over $CH_4$ increased in the range of LDH content 0~3 wt% but decreased in the range of 3~5 wt%. The $CH_4$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ selectivity over $H_2$ and $N_2$ increased as $CH_4$ and $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability increased. The $n-C_4H_{10}$ selectivity over $CH_4$ increased with increasing $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability up to 182,000 barrer and decreased above 182,000 barrer of $n-C_4H_{10}$ permeability. The $C_3H_8$ selectivity over $H_2$ and $N_2$ was found to decrease as the $C_3H_8$ permeability increased from 46,000 to 50,000 barrer, but to increase with increasing permeability from 50,000 to 52,300 barrer and decrease again with increasing permeability from 52,300 to 60,000 barrer. The $C_3H_8$ selectivity over $CH_4$ was found to decrease with increasing $C_3H_8$ permeability up to 52,300 barrer but increase above 52,300 barrer.
The PDMS-chitosan composite membranes were prepared by addition of 0.02~0.60 wt% chitosan to PDMS. In order to investigate the characteristics of these membranes, we used the analytical methods such as SEM and TGA. Gas permeation experiments was performed in $30^{\circ}C$, $4kg/cm^2$, the permeability and selectivity of $H_2$ and $N_2$ according to content change in composite membrane were investigated. The permeability of $H_2$ and $N_2$ for the PDMS-chitosan composite membranes increased when 0~0.20 wt% chitosan was added, and then decreased at higher wt% as chitosan content increased. The selectivity ($H_2/N_2$) of PDMS-chitosan composite membranes decreased when 0~0.20 wt% chitosan was added, and then increased as chitosan content increased. In the case of PDMS-chitosan in which chitosan was inserted to PDMS, thermal stability of PDMS was enhanced. Based on SEM observation, as the chitosan content within PDMS increased, the surface of the composite membranes became coarse and began to form holes.
PEBAX[poly(ether-block-amide)-ZIF-8(zeolitic imidazolate framework) composite membranes were prepared with different amounts of ZIF-8; 0, 1, 3, 7, 10, and 20 wt%. Gas permeation experiment were performed by varying the temperature of 25, 35, $40^{\circ}C$ under condition $6kgf/cm^2$. Gas permeability of $C_3H_6$, $C_3H_8$ and selectivity ($C_3H_6/C_3H_8$) were investigated by increasing the amount of ZIF-8 in the PEBAX. The gas permeability of $C_3H_6$ and $C_3H_8$ increased as ZIF-8 content increased among 0 to 7 wt% range and decreased among 7 to 20 wt% range. When the ZIF contents of PEBAX-ZIF composite membrane were 7 wt%, the selectivity ($C_3H_6/C_3H_8$) was taken between 3.6 and 3.8 value and also had the lowest activation energy.
Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA-28)/Co-Al LDH nanocomposite membranes were prepared by solution intercalation using organically modified LDH. LDH was made organophilic by the intercalation of dodecyl sulfate (DS) anion in the interlayer. The prepared membranes were characterized using XRD, FT-IR and SEM. Gas permeability of EVA/LDH nanocomposite membranes with LDH content of 1, 3, and 5 w% was studied for $O_2$ and $CO_2$ at pressure of 3, 4, and 5 bar. The permeability of $O_2$ and $CO_2$ was minimum for nanocomposite membrane with 1 wt% LDH and increased with increasing LDH content, which is presumably due to aggregation of LDH filler. The selectivity of $CO_2$ for $O_2$ showed the maximum value at 1 wt% of LDH content and decreased thereafter.
PTMSP-silica composite membranes were prepared by addition of 0, 15, 20, and 30 wt% TEOS (tetraethoxysilane), TMOS (tetramethoxysilane), MTMOS (methyltrimethoxysilane), and PTMOS (phenyltrimethoxysilane) contents to PTMSP using sol-gel process. The gas permeability of the composite membranes for $H_2$, $N_2$ and ideal selectivity for $H_2$ over $N_2$ were investigated as a function of alkoxysilane content. The permeabilities for $H_2$ and $N_2$ increased in the range of alkoxysilane contents 0~20 wt%, however decrease the range of 20~30 wt%. The ideal selectivities for $H_2$ over $N_2$ decreased in the range of TEOS and PTMOS contents 0~15 wt%, but increased in the range of 15~30 wt%. When compared to the upper bound of Robeson, PTMSP-silica composite membranes with TEOS content of 30 wt%, MTMOS content of 20 wt% and PTMOS content of 30 wt% turned out to be a simultaneous improvement in ideal selectivity and permeability.

Functional defects in mitochondria are involved in the induction of cell death in cancer cells. We assessed the toxic effect of camptothecin against the human cervical and uterine tumor cell line SiHa with respect to the mitochondria-mediated cell death process, and examined the combined effect of camptothecin and anticancer drugs. Camptothecin caused apoptosis in SiHa cells by inducing mitochondrial membrane permeability changes that lead to the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, decreased Bcl-2 levels, cytochrome c release, caspase-3 activation, formation of reactive oxygen species and depletion of GSH. Combination of camptothecin with other anticancer drugs (carboplatin, paclitaxel, doxorubicin and mitomycin c) or signaling inhibitors (farnesyltransferase inhibitor and ERK inhibitor) did not enhance the camptothecin-induced cell death and caspase-3 activation. These results suggest that camptothecin may cause cell death in SiHa cells by inducing changes in mitochondrial membrane permeability, which leads to cytochrome c release and activation of caspase-3. This effect is also associated with increased formation of reactive oxygen species and depletion of GSH. Combination with other anticancer drugs (or signaling inhibitors) does not appear to increase the anti-tumor effect of camptothecin against SiHa cells, but rather may reduce it. Combination of camptothecin with other anticancer drugs does not seem to provide a benefit in the treatment of cervical and uterine cancer compared with camptothecin monotherapy.
Effects of butachlor [N-(butoxymethyl)-2-chloro-2', 6'-diethyl acetanilide] and 1,8-naphthalic anhydride (NA) on post-germination growth, mesocotyl and root anatomy and root-cell membrane permeability of rice (Orvza saliva L.) were investigated. Lengths of mesocotyl and radicle were markedly decreased as the application rates of butachlor increased from 0.1 to 100 ppmW and NA from 1 to 100 ppmW, but there was no effect on coleoptile elongation. Application of butachlor-NA resulted in increase in coleoptile elongation, but decrease in mesocotyl elongation. Partial breakdown of cortical cells in root and mesocotyl was caused by either trutachlor or NA treatments, resulting in increase in intercellular air space. Further increase in the intercellular air space of root and mesocotyl was obtained when butachlor was applied in combination with NA. Increase in root-cell membrane permeability occurred when either butachlor or NA was applied. However, butachlor-NA treatments resulted in reduction in the permeability.
