Mechanism of Crack Formation in Pulse Nd:YAG Laser Spot Welding of Al Alloys (Al합금 펄스 Nd:YAG 레이저 점 용접부의 균열 발생기구)

  • This study was performed to investigate types and formation mechanism of cracks in two Al alloy welds, A5083 and A7N01 spot-welded by pulse Nd : YAG laser, using SEM, EPMA and Micro-XRD. In the weld zone, three types of crack were observed : center line crack({TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX}), diagonal crack({TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX}), and U shape crack({TEX}$C_{U}${/TEX}). Also, HAZ crack({TEX}$C_{H}${/TEX}) was observed in the HAZ region, furthermore, mixing crack({TEX}$C_{M}${/TEX}) consisting of diagonal crack and HAZ crack was observed. White film was formed at th hot crack region in the fractured surface after it was immersed to 10% NaOH water. In the case of A5083 alloy, white films in {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} crack and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} crack region were composed of low melting phases, {TEX}$Fe_{2}SiAl_{8}${/TEX} and eutectic phases, $Mg_2$Al$_3$ and $Mg_2$Si. Such films observed $CuAl_2$, {TEX}$Mg_{32}(Al,Zn)_{3}${/TEX}, MgZn$_2$, $Al_2$CuMg and $Mg_2$Si were observed in the whitely etched films near {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} crack and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} crack regions. The formation of liquid films was due to the segregation of Mg, Si, Fe in the case of A5083 alloy and Zn, Mg, Cu, Sim in the case of A7N01 alloy, respectively. The {TEX}$C_{C}${/TEX} and {TEX}$C_{D}${/TEX} cracks were regarded as a result of the occurrence of tensile strain during the welding process. The formation of {TEX}$C_{M}${/TEX} crack is likely to be due to the presence of liquid film at the grain boundary near the fusion line in the base metal as well as in the weld fusion zone during solidification. The {TEX}$C_{U}${/TEX} crack is considered a result of the collapsed keyhole through incomplete closure during rapid solidification.

Joining Foil-typed Pd-Cu Membranes to Collect CO2 Gas (이산화탄소 포집용 극박형 Pd-Cu 멤브레인 접합)

  • We present a new joining method for Pd-Cu membrane foils used as permeation tubes to collect $CO_2$. Since foils have poor mechanical strength, joining should be done at low temperatures to reduce residual stresses and without joining pressure. This contradicts the well known conditions for good contact between base materials that determines joint qualities. We selected Sn-Ag-Cu alloys that are highly reactive with Pd and Cu as a filler metal. As the filler melts at joining temperatures as low as $220{\sim}280^{\circ}C$, Pd and Cu are dissolved into the melt and react with the filler elements, which raises the melting temperature of the filler based on eutectic structures among the elements. Then, isothermal solidification progresses for the rest of the joining time. Intermetallic compounds (IMC) in the joints, one of the main factors for brittle joints, are inevitably formed. However, by optimizing both joining time and temperature, we balanced the wettability with IMC. Sealing test results confirmed that the joints are mechanically reliable during operation.

Current Status of Zinc Smelting and Recycling (아연의 제련 및 리사이클링 현황)

  • Global production of zinc is about 13 million tons and zinc is the fourth-most widely used primary metal in the world following iron, aluminum and copper. When zinc is recycled to produce secondary zinc, it can save about 75 % of the total energy that is needed to produce the primary zinc from ore, and in therms of $CO_2$ emissions reduced by about 40 %. However, since zinc is mainly used for galvanizing of steel, the recycling rate of zinc is about 25 %, which is lower than other metals. The raw materials for recycling of zinc include dusts generated in the production of steel and brass, sludge in the production process of non-ferrous metals, dross in the melting of zinc ingots or hot dip galvanizing, waste batteries, and metallic scrap. Among them, steelmaking dust and waste batteries are most actively recycled up to now. Most of the recycling process uses pyrometallurgical methods. Recently, however, much attention has been given to a combined process of pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes.

Hot and average fuel sub-channel thermal hydraulic study in a generation III+ IPWR based on neutronic simulation

  • The Integral Pressurized Water Reactors (IPWRs) as the innovative advanced and generation-III + reactors are under study and developments in a lot of countries. This paper is aimed at the thermal hydraulic study of the hot and average fuel sub-channel in a Generation III + IPWR by loose external coupling to the neutronic simulation. The power produced in fuel pins is calculated by the neutronic simulation via MCNPX2.6 then fuel and coolant temperature changes along fuel sub-channels evaluated by computational fluid dynamic thermal hydraulic calculation through an iterative coupling. The relative power densities along the fuel pin in hot and average fuel sub-channel are calculated in sixteen equal divisions. The highest centerline temperature of the hottest and the average fuel pin are calculated as 633 K (359.85 ℃) and 596 K (322.85 ℃), respectively. The coolant enters the sub-channel with a temperature of 557.15 K (284 ℃) and leaves the hot sub-channel and the average sub-channel with a temperature of 596 K (322.85 ℃) and 579 K (305.85 ℃), respectively. It is shown that the spacer grids result in the enhancement of turbulence kinetic energy, convection heat transfer coefficient along the fuel sub-channels so that there is an increase in heat transfer coefficient about 40%. The local fuel pin temperature reduction in the place and downstream the space grids due to heat transfer coefficient enhancement is depicted via a graph through six iterations of neutronic and thermal hydraulic coupling calculations. Working in a low fuel temperature and keeping a significant gap below the melting point of fuel, make the IPWR as a safe type of generation -III + nuclear reactor.

Preparation of n-type Bi-Te-Se-based Thermoelectric Materials with Improved Reliability via hot Extrusion Process (열간압출을 이용한 고신뢰성 n형 Bi-Te-Se계 열전소자 제조)

  • Herein we developed the hot extrusion technology to prepare n-type Bi-Te-Se-based thermoelectric materials with high reliability. Starting ingot was fabricated via melt-solidification process, then pulverized it into powders (${\sim}30{\mu}m$) by using high energy ball milling. By optimization of mold design and temperature-pressure conditions for hot extrusion, dense extrudate of 1.8 mm in diameter with high 00l orientation could be obtained from disc-shape compacted powders (20 mm in diameter). High power factor ${\sim}4.1mW/mK^2$ and enhanced mechanical strength ~50 MPa were simultaneously observed at 300 K.

  • This study characterized the reforming of methane with carbon dioxide, which is a major cause of global warming. The methane decomposition reaction with carbon dioxide was carried out using transition metal catalysts. The reactivity of tin was lower than that of a transition metal, such as nickel and iron. Most of the decomposition reaction occurred in the solid state. The melting point of tin is 505.03 K. Tin reacts in a liquid phase at the reaction temperature and has the advantage of separating carbon produced by the decomposition of methane from the liquid tin catalyst. Therefore, deactivation due to the deposition of carbon in the liquid tin can be prevented. Methane decomposition with carbon dioxide produced carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Ni was used to promote the catalyst performance and enhance the activity of the catalyst and lifetime. In this study, catalysts were synthesized using the excess wet impregnation method. The effect of the reaction temperature, space velocity was measured to calculate the activity of catalysts, such as the activation energy and regeneration of catalysts. The carbon-deposited tin catalyst regeneration temperature was 1023 K. The reactivity was improved using a nickel co-catalyst and a water supply.

  • Fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites are applied to transport industries to lightweight of body, and applications will be expanded gradually. In this study, the impregnation and mechanical properties of continuous glass fiber (GF) reinforced polycarbonate (PC) composites were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The continuous GF reinforced PC composite were prepared by using GF fabric and PC film via continuous compression molding method. The melting flow index and tensile strength of PC matrix were evaluated with different molecular weights. Mechanical properties (tensile, flexural, and compressive) and pore rate of GF/PC composite were evaluated with different molecular weights of PC. The fracture behavior was analyzed to fracture surface of GF/PC composite using FE-SEM images. As these results, it was condition of representing the best mechanical property that the GF/PC composite was prepared by using PC of 20,000 g/mol as matrix.

  • Melting and icing process of the PCMTCU(Phase Change Material Thermal Control Unit) installed on the NEXTSat-2, which is scheduled to be launched in the second half, was investigated through the results of satellite-level TVT(Thermal Vacuum Test). As a result of the test, it was confirmed that the latent heat of PCM contributes to the temperature stabilization of the heating components. The thermal model for numerical analysis of the PCMTCU was correlated to acquire a reasonable degree of accuracy using the collected temperature measurements during TVT. The periodic temperature variation of the PCMTCU in normal on-orbit operation was predicted with the correlated thermal model, and the quantitative contribution of the PCM on the thermal energy management was evaluated with the liquid fraction. It will receive flight telemetry from the NEXTSat-2 after the launch, and complete the space verification of the PCMTCU.

  • Conventionally, metal materials are produced by subtractive manufacturing followed by melting. However, there has been an increasing interest in additive manufacturing, especially metal 3D printing technology, which is relatively inexpensive because of the absence of complicated processing steps. In this study, we focus on the effect of varying powder size on the synthesis quality, and suggest optimum process conditions for the preparation of AlCrFeNi high-entropy alloy powder. The SEM image of the as-fabricated specimens show countless, fine, as-synthesized powders. Furthermore, we have examined the phase and microstructure before and after 3D printing, and found that there are no noticeable changes in the phase or microstructure. However, it was determined that the larger the powder size, the better the Vickers hardness of the material. This study sheds light on the optimization of process conditions in the metal 3D printing field.

Petrological Study on the Mantle Xenolith from Dongsuak Crater, Jeju Island (제주도 동수악 분화구에서 산출되는 맨틀포획암의 암석학적 연구)

  • Dongsuak crater, located in the mid-mountainous region of Jeju Island, is located at an altitude of about 700 m, and the newly discovered Dongsuak spinel peridotites was enclosed in Dongsuak alkaline basalt. The Dongsuak spinel peridotites are composed of olivine, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, and spinel with porphyroclastic texture under the an equilibrium state. The variations of mineral major and trace compositions indicates that the Dongsuak spinel peridotites originate at depth from 66 to 88 km under an equilibrium temperature of about 960℃~1068℃. The Dongsuak spinel peridotites have been undergone about 1~3% fractional melting. The LREE-enriched characteristics indicate that the Dongsuak spinel peridotites have been undergone cryptic metasomatism by silicate melt without new minerals.
