The Effect of Processing Parameters on HTS Tube Characteristics

  • High-temperature Superconductor(HTS) tubes were fabricated in terms of different chemical compositions and various SrSO$_4$additions by centrifugal forming method. For powder melting by induction the optimum range of melting temperatures and preheating temperature were 1050$^{\circ}C$, 1100$^{\circ}C$ and 550$^{\circ}C$ for 30 min, respectively. The mould rotating speed was 1000 rpm. A tube was annealed at 840$^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The plates like grains more than 20 $\mu\textrm{m}$ were well developed along the rotating direction of mould regardless of initial chemical compositions and the amounts of SrSO$_4$in Bi2212. The specimen with Bi2212 composition exhibited T$\_$c/ of 83 K, while the specimens fabricated with other compositions are lower than 60 K. The measured I$\_$c/ and J$\_$c/ at 77 K(B = 0 T) in Bi2212 with 7 % SrSO$_4$ composition were about 680 A and 380 A/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • High-temperature Superconductor(HTS) tubes were fabricated in term of different processing variables such as preheating temperature, speed of mold rotation and cooling rate by centrigugal forming method. For powder melting by induction the optimum range of melting temperatures and preheating temperature were $1050{\circ}C{\sim}1100{\circ}C\;and\;550{\circ}C\;for\;30\; min$, respectively The mould roating speed was 1000 rpm. A tube was annealed at $840 {\circ}C$ for 72 hours in oxygen atmosphere. The plate-like grains were well developed along the loafing direction and typical grain size was about more than $40{\mu}$. It was found that Ic values increased with increasing the Preheating temperature and speed of mold rotation. While Ic decreased with increasing the cooling rate. The measured Ic in $50mm{\times}70mm{\times}2.5mm$ tube was about 896 Amp.

  • High silicon cast irons(HSCI) with the high acid resistance have been used for the prevention of acid corrosion occurring in various structures under acid conditions. However, the HSCI is only known as one of materials which have high acid resistance, but few work has dealt with this material in domestic. Therefore, in this study, the acid resistance of various cast irons with alloying elements and melting conditions have been examined, and studied the influences of the matrix structures, mechanical properties and morphologies of graphite. The results obtained in this study are as follows : In case of melting temperature, the mechanical properties of specimen manufactured with high temperature of $1650^{\circ}C$ showed higher value because the inclusion and impurity were removed. In case of pouring temperature, the mechanical properties of specimen fabricated below $1350^{\circ}C$ of pouring temperature showed higher value because the amount of gas absorption from atmosphere decreased during the solidification time. The corrosion rate decreased with increase in Si content. On the other hand, Mn addition appeared an opposite trend with Si.

  • The powder manufacturing process using the gas atomizer process is easy for mass production, has a fine powder particle size, and has excellent mechanical properties compared to the existing casting process, so it can be applied to various industries such as automobiles, electronic devices, aviation, and 3D printers. In this study, a modified A4032-xSn (x = 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%) alloy with low melting point properties is investigated. After maintaining an argon (Ar) gas atmosphere, the main crucible is tilted; containing molten metal at 1,000℃ by melting the master alloy at a high frequency, and Ar gas is sprayed at 10 bar gas pressure after the molten metal inflow to the tundish crucible, which is maintained at 800℃. The manufactured powder is measured using a particle size analyzer, and FESEM is used to observe the shape and surface of the alloy powder. DSC is performed to investigate the change in shape, according to the melting point and temperature change. The microstructure of added tin (Sn) was observed by heat treatment at 575℃ for 10 min. As the content of Sn increased, the volume fraction increased to 1.1, 3.1, 6.4, and 10.9%.

국부용융성장법으로 제조된 Sm이 첨가된 YBCO 초전도체의 용융온도 및 성장 속도에 따른 미세구조 (Melt growth and superconducting properties of Sm-doped YBCO super-conductor by zone melting method)

  • Sm 원소가 첨가된 $(Sm/Y)_{1.8}Ba_{2.4}Cu_{3.4}O_{7-x}$[이하 (Sm/Y)1.8] 고온초전도체를 국부용융성장법을 이용해 대기 중에서 용융성장실험을 하였다. 초기 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체 시편은 rubber 몰드를 이용해 냉간정수압성형(CIP) 과정을 거쳐 길이 방향 원통형상으로 제조되었다. 이렇게 얻어진 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체는 용융온도 및 성장속도에 따라 광학현미경, TEM그리고 SQUID magnetometer를 이용해 미세구조 및 초전도특성을 평가하였다. 이 결과 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체의 최적의 용융온도 및 성장속도는 $1085^{\circ}C$에서 3.5mm/hr로 나타났다. 특히 일방향으로 용융성장된 (Sm/Y)1.8 초전도체의 광학현미경 및 TEM에 의하 미세구조 관측 결과, 초전도상인 (Sm/Y)123 matrix내에 비초전도상인 (Sm/Y)211 inclusions이 균질하게 분포되어 있는 것이 관측되었다. 초전도특성을 평가한 결과 용융성장된 (Sm/Y)1.8초전도체는 90K에서 임계온도가 시작되어 77K이상의 온도에서 포화되는 특성을 보였다.

Microstructural Change and Magnetic Properties of Nanocrystalline Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu Based Alloys Containing Minor Elements

  • The effect of minor element additions (Ca, Al) on microstructural change and magnetic properties of Fe-Nb-Cu-Si-B alloy has been investigated, in this paper. The Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu(-Ca-Al) alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon gas atmosphere. The alloy ribbons were fabricated by melt-spinning, and heat-treated under a nitrogen atmosphere at $520-570^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The soft magnetic properties of the ribbon core were analyzed using the AC B-H meter. A differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to examine the crystallization behavior of the amorphous alloy ribbon. The microstructure was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The addition of Ca increased the electrical resistivity to reduce the eddy current loss. And the addition of Al decreased the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy $K_1$ resulting in the increased permeability. The reduction in the size of the ${\alpha}$-Fe precipitates was observed in the alloys containing of Ca and Al. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the additions of Ca and Al notably improved the soft magnetic properties such as permeability, coercivity and core loss in the Fe-Nb-Cu-Si-B base nanocrystalline alloys.

  • We fabricated YBCO thick films by using a screen printing method with $Y_2$BaCuO$_{5}$(Y211) and BaCO$_3$ powders on Cu-substrate in $N_2$ atmosphere. Cu-sheathed YBCO thick film process is more simple and economic than YBCO coated conductor methods. The heat treatment is performed in the range of 860 - 875 $^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in the tube furnace of $N_2$ atmosphere. The flow rate of $N_2$ gas is fixed 60 $m\ell$/min. Microstructure and phases of thick films were investigated by optical microscope, X-ray diffraction(XRD) and SEM. At heat-treatment temperature, the thick films were partially melted by liquid reaction between CuO of oxidized copper substrate and the powders screen-printed on Cu-sheath. During the heat-treatment procedure, YBCO superconducting grains nucleate.e.

  • Hydrogen as a high-quality and clean energy carrier has attracted renewed and ever-increasing attention around the world in recent years, mainly due to developments in fuel cells and environmental pressures including climate change issues. In this processes for hydrogen production from fossil fuels, separation and purification is a critical technology. $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ alloy ingots were prepared by arc-melting the mixture of pure metals in an Ar atmosphere. Melt-spun ribbons were produced by the single-roller melt-spinning technique in an Ar atmosphere. Amorphous structure and thermal behavior were characterized by XRD and DSC. The permeability of the $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ amorphous alloy membrane was characterized by hydrogen permeation experiments in the temperature range 623 to 773 K and pressure of 2 bars. The maximum hydrogen permeability was $3.54{\times}10^{-9}[mol{\cdot}m^{-1}s^{-1}{\cdot}pa^{-1/2}]$ at 773 K for the $(Ni_{60}-Nb_{40})_{95}-Pd_5$ amorphous alloy.

Fe-30at.%Al-5at.%Cr계 합금의 공식특성에 미치는 플라즈마질화의 영향 (Effects of Plasma-Nitriding on the Pitting Corrosion of Fe-30at%Al-5at%Cr Alloy)

  • Effects of plasma-nitriding on the pitting corrosion of Fe-30at%Al-5at%Cr alloy containing Ti, Hf, and Zr were investigated using potentiostat in 0.1M HCl. The specimen was casted by the vacuum arc melting. The subsequent homogenization was carried out in Ar gas atmosphere at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 7days and phase stabilizing heat treatment was carried out in Ar gas atmosphere at $500^{\circ}C$ for 5 days. The specimen was nitrided in the $N_2$, and $H_2$, (1:1) mixed gas of $10^{-4}$ torr at $480^{\circ}C$ for 10 hrs. After the corrosion tests, the surface of the tested specimens were observed by the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). For Fe-30at%Al-5Cr alloy, the addition of Hf has equi-axied structure and addition of Zr showed dendritic structure. For Fe-30at%Al-5Cr alloy containing Ti, plasma nitriding proved beneficial to decrease the pitting corrosion attack by increasing pitting potential due to formation of TiN film. Addition of Hf and Zr resulted in a higher activation current density and also a lower pitting potential. These results indicated the role of dendritic structure in decreasing the pitting corrosion resistance of Fe-30Al-5Cr alloy. Ti addition to Fe-30Al-5Cr decreased the number and size of pits. In the case of Zr and Hf addition, the pits nucleated remarkably at dendritic branches.

The Synthesis of Vanadium-Doped Forsterite by the $H_2O_2$-Assisted Sol-Gel Method, and the Growth of Single Crystals of Vanadium-Doped Forsterite by the Floating Zone Method

  • Polycrystalline powder of vanadium-doped forsterite (Vδ $Mg_2SiO_4$) was synthesized by the $H_2O_2$-assisted sol-gel method. The vanadium dopant, which was added as VO$(OMe)_3$ in methanol, went through several redox reactions as the sol-gel reaction proceeded. Upon adding VO$(OMe)_3$ to a mixture of $Mg(OMe)_2$ and Si$(OEt)_4$ in methanol, V(V) reduced to V(IV). As hydrolysis reaction proceeded, the V(IV) oxidized all back to V(V). Apparently, some of the V(V) reduced to V(IV) during subsequent gelation by condensation reaction. The V(IV) remained even after heat treatment of the gel in highly oxidizing atmosphere. The crystallization of the xerogel around 880 ℃ readily produced single phase forsterite without any minor phase. Using the polycrystalline powder as feeding stock, single crystals of vanadium-doped forsterite were grown by the floating zone method in oxidizing or reducing atmosphere. The doping was limited in low level because of the high partitioning of the vanadium in liquid phase during melting. The greenish single crystal absorbed visible light of 700∼1100 nm. But, no emission was obtained in near infrared range.
