  • Spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were successfully prepared from petroleum or coal pyrolysis residues. After pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO), slurry oil, and coal tar were simply filtered to eliminate the solid impurities, the characteristics of the raw materials were evaluated by elemental analysis, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF-MS), and so on. Spinnable pitches were prepared for melt-spinning carbon fiber through a simple distillation under strong nitrogen flow, and further vacuum distillation to obtain a high softening point. Carbon fibers were produced from the above pitches by single-hole melt spinning and additional heat treatment, for oxidization and carbonization. Even though spinnable pitches and carbon fibers were processed under the same conditions, the melt-spinning and properties of the carbon fiber were different depending on the raw materials. A fine carbon fiber could not be prepared from slurry oil, and the different diameter carbon fibers were produced from the PFO and coal tar pitch. These results seem to be closely correlated with the initial characteristics of the raw materials, under this simple processing condition.

  • Ti and Ti based hydrogen storage alloys have been thought to be the third generation of alloys with a high hydrogen capacity, which makes it difficult to handle because of high reactivity. In order to solve the problem, the activation of a wide range of hysteresis of hydriding/dehydriding and without degradation of hydrogen capacity due to the hydriding/dehydriding cycle have to be improved in order to be aplied. Ti-Cr alloys have a high capacity about 0.8 wt.% in an ambient atmosphere. When the Ti-Cr alloys are added to Nb and Ta elements, they formed a laves phase in the alloy system. The Nb element was expected to make easy diffuse hydrogen in the Ti-Cr storage alloy, which was a catalytic element. In this study, the Ti-Nb-Cr ternary alloy was prepared by melt spinning. As-received specimens were characterized using XRD (X-ray Diffraction), SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) with EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) and TG/DSC (Thermo Gravimetric Analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry). In order to examine hydrogenation behavior, the PCI (Pressure-Composition-Isotherm) was performed at 293, 323, 373 and 423 K.

  • In this study, the properties of polypropylene(PP) non-woven fabric spun under various conditions by the Melt-blown method were verified, and the deodorant content and deodorization of PP non-woven fabric after deodorant-treatment were investigated. PP non-woven fabrics are manufactured by varying the temperature of spin beam, hot air temperature and amount, the RPM of collector R/O and the distance between collector and spinneret, which affects the structure of the non-woven fabric. After that, the structural characteristics and air permeability of the non-woven fabric were measured. The experimental results show that the amount of air, the distance between the collector and the spinneret significantly affect the structural characteristics and air permeability of the PP non-woven fabric. And, regardless of the weight of the PP non-woven fabric, the deodorizing effect of UiO-66 MOF deodorant add-on ratio and content was higher.

  • The sensitivity of the final filament to the ongoing sinusoidal disturbances has been Investigated in the viscoelastic spinning using frequency response method. Amplification ratios or gains of the spinline cross-sectional area at the take-up to any disturbances show resonant peaks along the frequency regime, where the frequencies at theme points directly correspond to the imaginary parts of the successive leading eigenvalues from the linear stability analysis. As shown in Jung et al. (1999) and Lee et al (2001), the sensitivity results on the effect of various process conditions such as spinline cooling and fluid viscoelasticity, obtained by dynamic transient simulation have been corroborated in this study. That is, increasing spinline cooling makes the system less sensitive to disturbances, thus stabilizes the spinning. Also, an increasing viscoelasticity for extension-thickening fluids decreases the sensitivity of the spinning. i.e., stabilizing the system, where, as it increases the sensitivity of the spinning of extension-thinning fluids. Furthermore, it has been found in the present study that the inertia force as one of secondary forces causes the system to be more stabile or less sensitive to process disturbances.

  • TLCP/polyester composite fibers (TPCFs) based on melt blends of PEN, PET, and TLCP were prepared by melt blending and spinning process to achieve high performance fibers. Reinforcement effect and TLCP fibrillar structure resulted in improvement of mechanical properties for TPCFs. The increase in the apparent crystallite size was attributed to the development of larger crystallites and more ordered crystalline structures in the annealed TPCFs. Molecular orientation was an important factor to determine mechanical property of TPCFs.

  • High-speed melt spinning of syndiotactic polystyrene was carried out using high and low molecular weight polymers, HM s-PS and LM s-PS, at the throughput rates of 3 and 6 g/min. The effect of take-up velocity on the structure and properties of as-spun fibers was investigated. Wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) patterns of the as-spun fibers revealed that the orientation-induced crystallization started to occur at the take-up velocities of 2-3 km/min. The crystal modification was a-form. Birefringence of as-spun fibers showed negative value, and the absolute value of birefringence increased with an increase in the take-up velocity. The cold crystallization temperature analyzed through the differential scanning calorimetry (OSC) decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity in the low speed region, whereas as the melting temperature increased after the on-set of orientation-induced crystallization. It was found that the fiber structure development proceeded from lower take-up velocities when the spinning conditions of higher molecular weight and lower throughput rate were adopted. The highest tensile modulus of 6.5 GPa was obtained for the fibers prepared at the spinning conditions of LM s-PS, 6 g/min and 5 km/min, whereas the highest tensile strength of 160 MPa was obtained for the HM s-PS fibers at the take-up velocity of 2 km/min. Elongation at break of as-spun fibers showed an abrupt increase, which was regarded as the brittle-ductile transition, in the low speed region, and subsequently decreased with an increase in the take-up velocity. There was a universal relation between the thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers and the birefringence of as-spun fibers when the fibers were still amorphous. The orientation-induced crystallization was found to start when the birefringence reached -0.02. After the starting of the orientation-induced crystallization, thermal and mechanical properties of as-spun fibers with similar level of birefringence varied significantly depending on the processing conditions.

  • Ternary blend fibers (TBFs) based on melt blends of PEN, PET, and TLCP were prepared by melt blending and spinning to achieve high performance fibers. The reinforcement effect and the TLCP fibrillar structure resulted in the improvement of mechanical properties for TBFs. Molecular orientation was an important factor in determining the tensile strength and modulus of TBFs. Another part of this research is silica nano-particle filled PEN composites were melt-blended to improve mechanical and physicalproperties, and processability. The tensile modulus and strength were improved adding silica nano-particles to the PEN. The decreased melt viscosity by the fumed silica resulted in the improvement of the processability. The fumed silica may act as a nucleating agent in the PEN matrix.

  • The hyper-eutectic Mg-33.5%Ni alloy was rapidly solidified by melt spinning process. The melt-spun Mg-33.5%Ni has amorphous structure and crystallization occurred above $162^{\circ}C$. The hydriding and dehydriding rates of melt-spun Mg-33.5%Ni increased with cycle and high rate of hydrogen storage occurred at 3rd cycle. The maximum hydrogen amount absorbed in melt-spun Mg-33.5%Ni at $300^{\circ}C$ is about 4.5%.
