Nylon 6 was blended with a brominated epoxy resin, tetrabromobisphenol A diglycidyl ether (DGEBBA), to enhance flame retardant property. Thermal properties of the blends were analyzed by DSC. Melting point and crystallization temperature decreased as the amount of epoxy resin increased. Melt index and relative viscosity decreased as the amount of the epoxy resin increased. When the blended amount of the epoxy resin was below 5%, the melt index decreased while the relative viscosity slightly increased. The blend resin was successfully spun into fiber without swelling or drawing the resonance phenomena. However, both the tenacity and elongation of the fiber decreased by increasing the amount of the DGEBBA.

Melt grafting of citraconic acid (CCA) onto an ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) with various peroxide initiators was performed using a Haake Rheocorder. Finding the optimum running condition and concentration is critical for effective grafting and performance of grafted material. Therefore, this study focused on the effects of mixing (reaction) condition and monomer/initiator dosages on the grafting degree, grafting efficiency and crosslinking degree (gel content), melt flow index and mechanical properties of CCA-g-EPDM. As the grafting degree/crosslinking degrees increased, the tensile strength increased significantly, but elongation at break and melt flow index decreased. The initiator 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butyl peroxy)-hexane (T-101) appeared to meet for the best grafting(2.31%). The grafting degree increased markedly with increasing monomer CCA/initiator T-101 contents. The grafting degree also increased with increasing mixing temperature/time, and then leveled off or decreased/increased a little. The optimum monomer/initiator dosages and reaction temperature/time were found to be about 5/0.05 wt% and $180^{\circ}C$/15min, respectively.

Polypropylenes(PP) with different melt index values were mixed with ethylene-propylene rubber(EPR) or ethylene-propylene diene monomer rubber(EPDM) and an ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid group in a twin screw extruder. Then test specimens were prepared from the pellets of the blends with an injection molding machine. The mechanical properties and morphology of fractured surfaces were measured. Relative peak intensities of carboxylic acid group on the specimen surface were measured with an attennuated total reflection infrared spectrometer (ATR-IR) and compared with each other. The blend specimens were found to have the gradient morphology of rubber domains in PP matrix in the core region and PP skin layer. The blends containing PP of higher melt index showed greater content of ethylene copolymer containing carboxylic acid on the surface when the relative peak intensities of ATR-IR for carboxylic acid were compared. As the melt index values were increased, the decrease tendency in mechanical propeties such as tensile strength and impact strength was more significant for PP/EPR blends than PP/EPDM blends.
Today, plastic waste has become a critical social issue due to the increasing of plastic consumption. Korean annual per capita plastic consumption was 132 kg, the most plastic consuming country in the world. Internationally, Carbon Neutral Agreement is underway due to global warming, consumers' interest and needs for biomass-based plastics has also been increased. In this study, film was produced by adding composite use additives to the biomass-based plastics according to concentration, and the resulting changes in discharge volume, melt index, and tensile strength were investigated. Melt index (MI) was significantly higher in PLA and PBAT than in petroleum-based resin LLDPE and LDPE. Also, among the same resin or in the same treatment group, MI has been increased when the heating temperature is increased. The discharge volume and gravity of the BDP-2 to which 4% compatibilizer was added were found to be higher among all treatments, while the tensile strength of MD and TD was also higher. BDP-2 was suitable to the film producing methods for biodegradable film production.

In the injection molding process, the controlling stability of products quality is a very important factor in terms of productivity. Even when the optimum process conditions for the desired product quality are applied, uncontrollable external factors such as ambient temperature and humidity cause inevitable changes in the state of the melt resin, mold temperature. etc. Therefore, it is very difficult to maintain prodcut quality. In this study, a system that learns the correlation between process variables and product weight through artificial neural networks and predicts process conditions for the target weight was established. Then, when a disturbance occurs in the injection molding process and fluctuations in the weight of the product occur, the stability control of the product quality was performed by ANN predicting a new process condition for the change of weight. In order to artificially generate disturbance in the injection molding process, controllable factors were selected and changed among factors not learned in the ANN model. Initially, injection molding was performed with a polypropylene having a melt flow index of 10 g/10min, and then the resin was replaced with a polypropylene having a melt floiw index of 33 g/10min to apply disturbance. As a result, when the disturbance occurred, the deviation of the weight was -0.57 g, resulting in an error of -1.37%. Using the control method proposed in the study, through a total of 11 control processes, 41.57 g with an error of 0.00% in the range of 0.5% deviation of the target weight was measured, and the weight was stably maintained with 0.15±0.07% error afterwards.
MWNTs have been widely investigated due to unique properties of such as good electrical conductivity and thermal stability in polymer composites industries. This paper established the procedure to fabricate PMMA/MWNT composites by a modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The electrical properties of PMMA/MWNT composites with different content of MWNT have been investigated. A sheet resistance percolation was observed at 4 wt% of MWNT for the melt processed composites. Sheet resistance of PMMA/MWNT composite film containing 4 wt% of MWNT was nearby $10^4{\Omega}/sq$ and this shows the possibility of potential application to EMI (Electronic Magnetic Interference) shielding materials. The characteristics of composites were analyzed by TGA, DSC, and SEM. In addition, MFI (Melt Flow Index) has been measured to analyze the rheological property.
The branched polycarbonates (B-PCs) with two different branching agents were synthesized from melt polymerization. The contents of branching agent were in the range of 0.001~0.005 mol%. The chemical structure of the synthesized PC was determined by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR, and $^{13}C$ NMR, spectroscopy. The molecular weight, glass transition and degradation temperatures were determined by GPC, DSC, and TGA. The molecular weight of the phloro type B-PC had a lower value than the other one, and the glass transition temperature increased with molecular weight. Compared with linear PC, the rheological properties of the B-PC indicated an increase of complex viscosity in the low frequency region and shear thinning tendency. Power law index(n) representing shear thinning was calculated by linear regression and the values were in the range of 0.483~0.996. The rheological properties of the B-PCs were measured by a dynamic rheometer.
Phase change materials based on polypropylene blended with n-eicosane were studied in this paper. In addition, this paper reviews recent studies on the preparation of shape stabilized phase change materials (SSPCM), such as SSPCM from polypropylenes and n-eicosane, their basic properties and possible applications to latent heat storage. The preparation methods used were the melting method and absorption methods. Shape stabilized PCM(SSPCM) prepared for DSC, WAXD, FTIR spectroscopy, ARES, results of the analysis of shape stability heat capacity to improve were identified.
In this study, we focus on the improvement of the filling efficiency in injection molding by application of ultrasonic vibration. While studies about the filling efficiency of typical filling processes in the injection molding have been widely performed, there have been only few studies about the filling efficiency of an ultrasonic process. The effect of the ultrasonic vibration is an important process condition, which influences the flow characteristics of polymer melt. This new condition even affects well-known injection conditions such as cavity pressure, injection temperature and mold temperature. For this study, we carried out a numerical analysis by appropriate modeling and analysis of the ultrasonic process in the filling process. To verify this numerical analysis, we compared the numerical results with the experimental data. Also, we analyzed the filling process in a thin cavity using this numerical analysis. To understand the flow characteristics of polymer melt in the ultrasonic process, we substituted real and complex vibration conditions with simplified and classified conditions according to the position of vibrating cavity surfaces and the phase difference between two opposing cavity surfaces. We also introduced MFR (melt flow ratio) as a new index to estimate the filling efficiency in the ultrasonic process.
To estimate the recycling feasibility of high melt-indexed polycarbonate, 3.5 inch LGP, tensile, flexural and impact specimens were injection-molded and the LGP was shredded into scraps. The scraps were injection-molded again and this process was repeated for 4 times. Properties of the sample, i.e., optical properties, mechanical properties and number average molecular weight were measured at each cycle. Based on the results, as the number of reprocessing increased, transmittance decreased at low wavelength and color coordinate was changed systematically to yellow. Yellow index increased more than twofold during 4 recycling processes. On the other hand, the number average molecular weight decreased during recycling processes. Flexural and impact strength showed no tendency according to the number of recycling, but tensile strength decreased sharply after the third recycling process. Based on these properties, it was concluded that the number of recycling for high melt-indexed polycarbonate allowed in this study was one.
