  • This experiment was carried out to select suitable organic matter in To-jik nursery (self soil nursery) for complement To-jik nursery's defects that are deterioration of raw material by poor quality of seed ginseng and reduction of the quantity in seed ginseng production. Organic matter used were Yacto, rice bean, defatted rice bran, soybean cake and their mixture. As follows, bulk density in soil physical property by treating organic composts was the greatest in soybean cake and the next was followed by mix, Yacto, defatted rice bran, and rice bran treatment in order. Soil pore space ratio was totally the opposite; that was rice bran the first and followed by defatted rice bran, Yacto, mix and soybean cake treatment. The incidence rate of damping off by treating organic composts was 1.5% in both soybean cake and mix while the others was 1.0%. Emergence time was the same among treatment on April 16 and Emergence rate was the highest at 73% in Yacto. There was no significant differences among treatment in the growth of aboveground part but it was a little better in defatted rice bran treatment. In Yacto treatment, the growth of underground part, total root number per kan, rate of first grade ginseng seedling, and rate of usable ginseng seedling etc. were entirely higher but there was little differences. Using defatted rice bran was slightly lower in productivity compared to Yacto, but the possibility was high as a alternative for Yacto in a view of managing cost down.

  • Objectives : The aim of this research is to produce information by gathering up the data on the interaction between medicinal herbs which lie scattered in oriental medical books, and to provide people with easy access to the information by visualizing it. Methods : For this purpose, this study established the fundamental data by organizing the patterns of interaction into some kinds after selecting a part of Bonchogangmok(本草綱目) and extracting its text. In addition, in an effort to visualize the data, the study converted the data into 'net' file and visualized the interaction between medicinal herbs on Pajek. The visualization was done targeting a total of three patterns, such as 1 medicinal herb, 2 medicinal herbs, and 1 prescription. With the data on 'Chinese Lacquer(乾漆)' for 1 medicinal herb, data on 'Licorice(甘草)' and 'Chinese Lacquer(乾漆)' for 2 medicinal herbs, and data on 'Iijin-tang(二陳湯)' for prescription, the research conducted the analysis of the network using 'Kamada-Kawaii Algorithm' on Pajek. Results : As a result of the analysis, it was possible to see the meanings at a single glance as the scattered and fractional meanings were integrated with focus on medicinal herbs, but the increasing number of analyzed medicinal herbs tended to more and more complicate their relationships, thus, requiring additional work like filtering. Conclusions : Such results are fairly applicable in on-line database, and it is judged that if further research expands its scope to include systematic classification of medicinal herbs or cover other medical books than Bonchogangmok, it will create more objective, abundant information.

  • This study analyzed surface-chemical transitions in manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture as proposed method by Dongeuibogam. The manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture from a used iron for a long time was divided by primary medicinal herbs treatment, secondary medicinal herbs treatment and tertiary treatment using by dog meat. The traditional acupuncture research process was measured according to the characteristics and changes of the specimens at each processing step of the manufacturing process. The following devices were used to Surface analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD). As a result, medicinal herbs removed impurities on the surface and raised the antibacterial effect in the manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture. Furthermore, the ingredients of medicinal herbs were coated on the surface of the iron. Dog meat influenced to prevent surface corrosion, reduce friction when the acupuncture was inserted. Although the process empirically obtained, a glimpse of the wisdom of our ancestors was revealed. These ancestral wisdom can be expected to apply today, when used in manufacturing process of a modern stainless steel acupuncture to compensate for the defective part.

  • Pectolinarin was isolated from the ethyl acetate fraction of Cirsium setidens using open column chromatography and was analyzed using spectrometry. Pectolinarin content in Cirsium spp. was determined using HPLC/UV. Pectolinarin content in the aerial part of Cirsium spp. was higher than that in the root and pappus. Pectolinarin content was highest in the aerial part of C. chlorolepis (110.65mg/g extract). Consequently, the aerial part of C. chlorolepis has potential for use in new natural medicinal products, health supplements, and beverages.

  • Background: Inflammation plays an important role in various diseases, including ulcerative colitis, Behcet's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of Morus alba L. extracts obtained using different extraction methods (water extraction or high temperature extraction) on RAW264.7 cells. Methods and Results: Extracts from the central part (including the heartwood, sapwood, cambiun, and phloem) and bark (including the periderm and cortex) of Morus alba L. were obtained using either water or high temperature extraction. The following extract were obtained: MA1, water extract from the central part of Morus alba L., MA2, high temperature extract from the central part of Morus alba L., MA3, water extract from the bark of Morus alba L., and MA4, high temperature extract from the bark of Morus alba L. None of these extracts was observed to be cytotoxic to RAW264.7 cells. The MA2 extract reduced the production of LPS-induced NO (nitric oxide), $PGE_2$ (prostaglandin $E_2$), $TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6, and $IL-1{\beta}$ production in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Conclusions: These results indicated that the inflammatory response was moderated by MA2. Treatment with MA2 could be used as a natural medicine for treating diseases involving inflammation. However, further experiments are required to determine how the high temperature extraction method alters the active ingredients in the extract and influences the anti-inflammatory effects of Morus alba L..

  • Comparative analysis of paeoniflorin, albiflorin and phenolic compound contents as bioactive components of peony was performed by Reverse Phase-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RPHPLC) using the four- year-old peony which were different plant parts and pretreatment, such as removing or unremoving the cork layer of peony root before drying. The contents of paeoniflorin, albiflorin, (+)-taxifolin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin were the highest in rhizome part, but those of gallic acid and benzoic acid in the leaves were higher than other parts. The contents of albiflorin, gallic acid, benzoic acid and (-)-epicatechin in the cork layer were higher than in those of the core, but the contents of paeoniflorin, (+)-taxifolin $3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$ and (+)-catechin in the core were higher than those in the cork layer. In general, the rhizome part of peony root has been used only propagation purpose, but this part contained high contents of bioactive component. Therefore, it is needed that medicinal application of rhizome part in peony root was firmly investigated. Also, In the use of peony root for medicinal purpose, the use of peony root with cork layer can be efficient way on the practical use of useful components and the reduction of labor for removing the cork layer.
