This paper presents the optimal redundant actuation of parallel manipulators for complicated robotic applications such as cutting grinding drilling and digging that require a high degree of operational stiffness as well as the balance between force applicability and dexterity. First by taking into account the distribution(number and location) of active joints the statics and the operational stiffness of a redundant parallel manipulator are formulated and the effects of actuation redundancy are analyzed, Second for given task requirements including joint torque limit task force maximum allowable disturbance and maximum allowable deflection the task execution conditions of a redundant parallel manipulator are derived and the efficient testing formulas are provided. Third to achieve high operational stiffness while maintaining moderate dexterity the redundant actuation of a parallel manipulator is optimized which determines the optimal distribution of active joints and the optimal internal joint torque, Finally the simulation results for the optimal redundant actuation of a planar parallel manipulator are given.

This paper presents an optimum design of herringbone grooved journal bearing for spindle motor of hard disk drive (HDD) system. In addition to the conventional “rectangular” groove, various groove profiles are designed. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the oil film and frictional torque are calculated and compared for tile various groove profiles. The “circular”, “valley”, and “reversed saw tooth” grooves do not produce high direct stiffness, since they partly increase the groove depths in the direction of lubricant flow, causing to reduce the pumping action of the bearing. The maximum direct stiffness can be obtained by the “rectangular”, “saw tooth”, and “step” grooves. With the same cross sectional area of the grooves, these three grooves have the same maximum stiffness, damping coefficients, and frictional torque. Among these recommendable grooves, the saw tooth groove may keep its original profile for long, enduring metal-to-metal contact during startup and shutdown.

A six-degree-of-freedom dynamic model with time-varying mesh stiffness/damping and friction has been developed for the dynamic analysis of a gear driving system. This model includes a spur gear pair, bearing, friction and prime mover. Using Newton???s method, equations of motion for the gear driving system were derived. Two computer programs are developed to calculate mesh stiffness, transmission error and friction force and analyze the dynamics of the modeled system using a time integration method. The influences of mesh stiffness/damping, bearing, and friction affecting the system were investigated by performing eigenvalue analysis and time response analysis. It is found that the reduction of the maximum peak magnitude by friction is decided according to designing the positions of pitch point and maximum peak in the responses.

The functional external fixator system fur bone deformity near joints in legs using the worm gear was developed for curing the difference angles in fracture bone and the lengthening bar for curing the difference length in fracture bone. Both experiments and FE analysis were performed to compare the elastic stiffness in several loading modes and to improve the functional external fixator system for the bone deformity. The FE model using the compressive and bending FE analysis was applied to the FE analysis due to the angle differences. The results show that the compressive stiffness value in experiment was 175.43N/mm; the bending stiffness value in experiment was 259.74N/mm; compressive stiffness value in FEM was 188.67N/mm; bending stiffness value in FEA was 285.71N/mm. The errors between experiments and FEA were less than 10%. The maximum stress (157MPa) to the angle of clamp was lower than the yield stress (176.4MPa) of SUS316L. The stiffnesses in both axial compressive and bending of the new fixator are about 2 times higher than other products except EBI (2003).

This paper presents the effect of a reflective force computed from a first-order-hold method on the stability of a haptic system. A haptic system is composed of a haptic device with a mass and a damper, a virtual spring, a sampler and a sample-and-hold. The boundary condition of the maximum virtual stiffness is analytically derived by using the Routh-Hurwitz criterion and the condition shows that the maximum virtual stiffness is proportional to the square root of the mass and the damper of a haptic device and also is inversely proportional to the sampling time to the power of three over two. The effectiveness of the derived condition is evaluated by the simulation. When the reflective forces are computed by using the first-order-hold method, the maximum available stiffness to guarantee the stability is increased several hundred times as large as when the zero-order-hold method is applied.

Although pipelines are composed of segmental tubes commonly connected by rubber gasket or push-in joints, current studies mainly simplified pipelines as continuous structures. Effects of joints on three-dimensional deformation mechanisms of existing pipelines due to tunnel excavation are not fully understood. By conducting three-dimensional numerical analyses, effects of pipeline burial depth, tunnel burial depth, volume loss, pipeline stiffness and joint stiffness on bending strain and joint rotation of existing pipelines are explored. By increasing pipeline burial depth or decreasing tunnel cover depth, tunneling-induced pipeline deformations are substantially increased. As tunnel volume loss varies from 0.5% to 3%, the maximum bending strains and joint rotation angles of discontinuous pipelines increase by 1.08 and 9.20 times, respectively. By increasing flexural stiffness of pipe segment, a dramatic increase in the maximum joint rotation angles is observed in discontinuous pipelines. Thus, the safety of existing discontinuous pipelines due to tunnel excavation is controlled by joint rotation rather than bending strain. By increasing joint stiffness ratio from 0.0 (i.e., completely flexible joints) to 1.0 (i.e., continuous pipelines), tunneling-induced maximum pipeline settlements decrease by 22.8%-34.7%. If a jointed pipeline is simplified as a continuous structure, tunneling-induced settlement is thus underestimated, but bending strain is grossly overestimated. Thus, joints should be directly simulated in the analysis of tunnel-soil-pipeline interaction.

A simple method of on-line stiffness measurement using the wrinkling behavior of paper web between rollers was developed. The theory and calculating equation were presented, and the theoretical maximum error associated with the equation was also presented. We called the stiffness measured by Taber tester as 'Taber stiffness', and by wrinkling behavior as 'wrinkle stiffness', respectively, for comparison. By using this method, on-line complete control of paper stiffness will be possible in near future. Special care about shear wrinkle and paper dimensional effects were addressed.

The Taguchi method is applied to obtain the optimal design of an automotive pedal arm in consideration of the stiffness test specification. Design parameters are defined to describe shape of the pedal arm. Volume, maximum Von-Mises stress and maximum displacement of the pedal arm are established as the smaller-the-better characteristics. Optimal parameters are determined on the basis of the analyzed level averages of the characteristics.

The seismic behaviors of a bridge system with several simple spans are examined to see the effects of the longitudinal stiffness degradation due to abutment-soil interaction. The abutment-backfill system is modeled as one degree-of-freedom-system with nonlinear spring and linear damper. various soil-conditions surrounding the abutment such as loose sand, medium dense sand, and dense sand are considered in the bridge seismic analysis. The idealized mechanical model for the whole bridge system is modeled by adopting the multiple-degree-of-freedom system, which can consider components such as pounding phenomena, friction at the movable supports, rotational and translational motions of foundations, and the nonlinear pier motions. The stiffness of the abutment is found to be rapidly reduced at the beginning of the earthquakes, and to be converged to constant values shortly after the displacement approaches to the Predefined critical values. It is observed that the maximum relative distanced an maximum relative displacements are generally Increased as the relative density of a soil decreases As the peak ground acceleration increases, the response ratio of the case considering stiffness degradation to the case considering constant stiffness decreases.
