The case report describes the occlusal rehabilitation of a male patient with Angle Class III malocclusion and its effect on maximum bite force. The main complaints of patient were masticatory difficulty and poor esthetic. The patient's expectations from the treatment were a good esthetic and function with a less invasive and relatively promptly way. Therefore, increasing of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) and then restoring the maxillary and mandibular teeth was chosen by the patient among the treatment options. At the beginning of treatment maximum bite force of patient was measured. Then an occlusal splint was provided to evaluate the adaptation of the patient to the altered OVD. Full mouth rehabilitation with metal ceramic restorations was made. After the completion of full mouth restoration, bite force measurement was repeated and patient exhibited increased maximum bite force. Full mouth restorative treatment in a patient with Class III malocclusion could be an effective treatment approach to resolve esthetic concern and to improve masticatory function related to maximum bite force.
A kinematical study of bite force during voluntary isometric contraction was investigated in 20 Korean men with TMJ dysfunction and 30 Korean men as normal subject, ranging from 20 to 27 years old. The author observed maximum bite force, slope of bite force graph, curve index and duration of maximum bite force with the use of the foil strain gauge (MPM-3000) and RS Dymograph (Beckman). The obtained results were as follows : 1. Maximum bite forces were 29kg and 29kg for left and right side of normal subject (p>0.05) and 19kg and 29kg for affected and non-affected side of TMJ dysfunction patient. 2. The slopes of bite force graph were $68^{\circ}$ and $68^{\circ}$ for left and right side of normal subject (p>0.05) and $59^{\circ}$ and $71^{\circ}$ for affected and non-affected side of TMJ dysfunction patient. (p<0.01) 3. The curve indices were 0.93 and 0.90 for left and right side of normal subject and 1.10 and 0.90 for affected and non-affected side of TMJ dysfunction patient. (p>0.05) 4. The durations of maximum bite force were 424 msec and 413 msec for left and right side of normal subject and 337 msec and 334 msec for affected and non-affected side of TMJ dysfunction patient. (p>0.05)
The masticatory function of tooth is maintained by the periodontal health, and periodontal health is also maintained by the masticatory function. Bite forces are withstanded by the PDL, and this thought to be through the viscoelastic theory. Mobility test and Bite force test are used to evaluate the viscoelastic theory of the PDL. In this study, the bite force test was used. In the same conditions of quantity of the supporting tissue, the maximum bite force according to the quality of the supporting tissue was evaluated. The study was conducted on 40 patients with moderate adult periodontitis, who were indications to the modified widman flap treatment. The maximum bite force in the premolar and molar regions were tested before treatment, 3weeks and 4 weeks after treatment. and the results were as follows. 1. In the premolar region, 3 weeks and 4 weeks after treatment showed higher maximum bite force than before treatment. And in the molar region the maximum bite force decreased 3 weeks after treatment, but increased after 4 weeks, compared to before treatment. 2. In the 1st premolar, there were only significant difference between before and 3 weeks after treatment, and between and 4 weeks after treatment. 3. In the 2nd premolar, there were only significant difference between before and 3 weeks after treatment, and between and 4 weeks after treatment. 4. In the 1st molar, there were no significant difference between before, 3 weeks after treatment, 4 weeks after treatment. 5. In the 2nd molar, there were no significant difference between before, 3 weeks after treatment, 4 weeks after treatment. From the results above, it shows that there were improvements in the maximum bite force through specific periodontal treatments, and thus it can be considered in clinical situations, that selection of the prosthodontic material, decisions of extraction, evaluation of the prognosis after periodontal treatment is a helpful method.
The author has synchronously recorded average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles and the maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the prferred chewing side. These activities were recorded in order to study the EMG activity pattern of the working side and the balancing side to maximum bete force and functioning state of muscle in 30 patients with TMD and in 30 healthy subjects as controls. The results were as follows : 1. The maximum bite force on the mandibular first molar on the preferred chewing side was 20.63kg in TMD patients and 53.30kg in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The maximum bite force in TMD patients was 38.7% of the healthy subjects. 2. The average electromyographic activities of temporalis anterioris and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side during maximum bite force were lower in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). The average electromyographic activities of each muscle in TMD patients were 61.0%-62.8% of the healthy subjects. 3. The proportionalities of average electromyographic activities of temporalis anteriors and masseter muscles on the working side and the balancing side to maximum bite force were greater in TMD patients than in the healthy subjects(p<0.01). 4. Between the working side and the balancing side, the proportionality of average electromyographic activity of temporalis anterior to maximum bite force on the working healthy subjects (p<0.01). The proportionality of average electromyographic activity of working side and the balancing side in both groups (p<0.05).
In order to evaluate the effect of signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders on the bite force of anterior teeth, the author estimated a feature of maintaining the maximum bite force on central incisors in Korean 34 adult females with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD group) and in Korean 31 adult females within normal masticatory function far from any sign or symptom of TMD (control group), and analyzed the data statistically. The obtained results were as follows: 1. There was not a significant difference of the maximum bite force on central incisors between TMD group and control group (P>0.05). 2. The duration of maintaining the maximum bite force on central incisors in TMD group was shorter than it in control group (P<0.01).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the maximum occlusal force implant prostheses to natural teeth. Material and Method: Fifty nine patients treated either with $Br{\aa}anemark$ implants and ITI implants during the recent ten years were involved in this study. The maximum occlusal force were measured with unilateral bite force recorder and dental prescale system. Results: 1. The maximum occlusal forces of the implant prostheses and natural teeth were not significantly different where measured with unilateral bite force recorder and dental prescale system. 2. The maximum occlusal forces were not significantly different between $Br{\aa}nemark$ implant and ITI implant prostheses. 3. The maximum occlusal forces of the implant prostheses had lower when compared with natural teeth during 1-6 months functional periods when measured with the unilareral bite force recorder(P<0.05) and 1-12 months functional periods when measured with the dental prescale system(P<0.05). After these periods there was not statistical significant difference between the implant prostheses and natural teeth. 4. The maximum occlusal forces of the wide diameter implant prostheses were higher than the maximum occlusal forces of the regular diameter implant prostheses when measured with dental prescale system(P<0.05), but there was no significant difference between the wide diameter and the regular diameter implant prostheses when measured with unilateral bite force recorder. 5. The maximum occlusal forces of the single implant prostheses were not significantly different with the splinting implants prostheses. 6. The maximum occlusal forces of the implant prostheses were not significantly different by age and sex. 7. There was significantly different between maximum occlusal forces measured with unilateral bite force recorder and dental prescale system(P<0.0001) but there was positive correlation(r=0.52. P<0.05). Conclusion: The maximum occlusal forces of the implant prostheses were not significantly different to natural teeth during clenching and unilateral maximum biting.

Bite force is created by the force of adjacent teeth accompanied with tension of masticatory muscle. The bite force value is greater in male than in female and ha maximum value at first molar. Masseter muscle is associated with bite force and during muscle contraction the electric signal is expressed in EMG form. The aim of the study is to assess recovery time for masseter muscle activity and according to each part of bite force after open reduction with internal fixation when mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture occurred. And to determine the appropriate period for mandibular fracture patients to have normal masticatory activity. 30 patients with normal bite condition was selected for control group and from April, 2007 to September, 2007, 20 patients who visited our department of oral and maxillofacial surgery of Dankook University, were selected for the study and were diagnosed as mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture. For control group, the bite force for incisors, canine, premolars and molars and activity of the masseter muscle was measured and compared for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 weeks. That was divided as fracture side and normal side. Mann-Whitney U test was performed for significant difference and the following result was obtained. 1. The maximum voluntary bite force for incisors, canine, premolars and molars portion were 0.113 kN, 0.182kN, 0.295kN and 0.486kN and the masseter muscle activity was 0.192 volts in the control group. 2. The maximum bite force at fracture side was recovered by 4th weeks for incisors, 6th weeks for canine and premolars and 8th weeks for molars and the masseter muscle activity was recovered by 6th weeks in the experimental group. 2. The maximum bite force at normal side was recovered by 4th weeks for incisors, 6th weeks for canine, premolars and molars and the masseter muscle activity was recovered by 3rd weeks in the experimental group. 3. The method for internal fixation by 2.0mm miniplates at both superior and inferior border had no complications according for twenty patients and had a satisfactory recovery. According to the result, patient with mandibular angle fracture and subcondyle fracture, 8 weeks was required for bite force recovery. Therefore, patients with open reduction and internal fixation under general anesthesis, it can be assumed that 8 weeks was needed after operation in order to have normal bite force and masseter muscle recovery.
The author performed the mearsurement of Korean male aging 20 to 25 years, at right and left molar teeth using statham strain gauge and RS Dymograph of Beckman. The conclusion obtained are as follow.
1. The maximum bite force at the thickness 20mm. of Korean male teeth was 27.58kg. 2.The minimum bite force at the thickness 20mm. of Korean male was 23.25kg. 3. The bite force on tje right side was stronger than the left side in average score. 4. The bite force on the left side were stronger than the right in 40 percent of the cases.

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the volume of pre- and post operative masseter muscle and bite force in mandibular prognathic patients treated with SSRO with the use of the 3D CT imaging technique and occlusal force meter. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 12 patients with mandibular prognathism (5 males and 7 females) who underwent mandibular setback surgery (BSSRO) in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Samsung medical center. Bite force was measured at pre op, post op 3, 6 and 12 months by occlusal force meter(GM10, Nagano Keiki, Japan) The preoperative CT examination of subjects was performed between one month prior to operation and one year after to operation. And muscle volume was measured. Result: As compared to preoperative measurements at 1 year postoperatively the masseter & internal pterygoid muscle volume were diminished (p<0.05) The bite force steadily recovered, so at postoperatively 6 months reached the preoperative level. And at 1 year after operation, the maximum bite force was significantly greater than preoperative levels. No significant correlation was presented between masseter muscle and bite force (p>0.05), internal pterygoid muscle and bite force (p>0.05). Conclusion: In this study, the results showed that volume and bite force of the masticatory muscles decreased significantly immediate after orthognathic surgery for mandibular set-back. However, reduction of maximum bite force disappears within 6 months after surgery.

Cantilever bridge is widely used by mny clinicians, but its worst mechanical character, so called Class I lever system, makes dentists hesitate to restore the missing tooth with it. Therefore it is important to study stress of the cantilever bridge. In this study, two models of cantilever bridges that restores the missing mandibular second molar with two abutment teeth were constructed. One model was a type of cantilever bridge supported by a normal alveolar bone, the other one was supported by an alveolar bone resorbed to its 1/3 of root length. Maximum bite force(550N) and funtional maximum bite force(300N) were vertically applied to the distal end of the pontic, distal 1/3, and distal half of the pontic. And each force was also applied to centric occlusal contacts as a distributed force. Total 16 loading cases were compared and analyzed with 3-dimensional finite element method. The results were as follows: 1. The stress was concentrated on the joint of the pontic and the retainer, grooves, and distal cervical margin of the posterior retainer. 2. In case of maximum bite force(550N) at the end of the pontic, the risk of fracture at the joint of the pontic and the retainer was high. 3. In case of distributed force in centric occlusion and functional maximum bite force(300N), the stresses were less than the yield strength of the type VI gold for any loading cases. 4. In case of alveolar bone resorption, the occlusal force to the cantilever pontic caused more stress on the root apex and less stress on the alveolar crest region of the distal surface of the posterior abutment. 5. In case of alveolar bone resorption, the displacement was larger than that of normal alveolar bone in all loading cases.
