  • Proactive relay selection in cognitive radio networks has recently received considerable attention. However, its outage probability analysis is limited to partially-identical fading distributions, uncorrelation among received signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), and no direct channel. This paper completes this literature deficiency by generalizing the existing analysis for non-identical fading distributions, correlation among received SNRs, and with direct channel. Numerous results demonstrate that relay selection with a direct channel achieves a higher diversity order and superior performance than that without a direct channel at virtually no cost of power and bandwidth. Further, proactive relay selection suffers an error floor at either a large maximum transmit power or large maximum interference power; however, the error floor level can be significantly remedied with an increase in the number of relays.

  • A new smart antenna receiver which incorporates the spatial fourier Transform and the maximal ratio combining(MRC) is proposed. By adapting the spatial fourier transform, the proposed method could separate the received signal into several spatial frequency components which correspond to the arrival angles of signal components, which means the beam focusing. By using the MRC, the proposed method could achieve the maximum signal to noise ratio for the signal of interest. The proposed algorithm is integrated to the CDMA reverse link receiver and simulations are performed to confirm the performance. As a result, the beam focusing effect is confirmed and the performance gain with the proposed algorithm is comparable to ordinary smart antenna receivers. The simulations are performed over the additive white gaussian noise (AWGN) environments and the results are obtained for the beam focusing capability according to the angle of arrival of a signal and the bit error performance improvement according to the number of combining branches in the MRC.

  • The performances of M-ary PSK(MPSK) systems using L-branch maximum ratio combining(MRC) diversity reception in frequency-nonselective slow Rician fading channels are derived theoretically. Especially we investigate the effect of number of symbols on the difference between the approximation to bit error probability and the exact bit error rate(BER) in evaluating the performance of MPSK signals through numerical analyses. On the other hand, when M-ary DPSK(MDPSK) signals experience the Rician fading channels, the general formula for evaluating BER of MDPSK signals in the independent branch diversity system is presented using the integral-form expressions.

  • The performances of M-ary signals using L-branch maximum ratio combining (MRC) diversity reception in correlated Nakagami fading channels are derived theoretically. The coherent reception of M-ary differential phase shift keying (MDPSK), phase shift keying (MPSK), and quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) is considered. It is assumed that the fading parameters in each diversity branch are identical. The general formula for evaluating symbol error rate (SER) of M-ary signals in the independent branch diversity system is presented using the integral-form expressions. Until now, results did not extend to the various M-ary case for a coherent reception. The numerical results presented in this paper are expected to provide information for the design of radio system using M-ary modulation method for above mentioned channel environment.

  • In this paper, two interference suppression schemes (LCCMA, HIC) applied to the MC-CDMA system were proposed. The proposed schemes have advantages that it don't requires the other's spreading code and can be used even in mobile. The proposed HIC combines the proposed interference suppressor with PIC. Simulation is performed in various environments using the Monte Carlo method. Simulation results show that there is 1.4~3 times capacity increase in corresponding simulation environments. Also this scheme can take advantage of path diversity whereas the system using EGC, MRC, and PIC cannot. Therefore, as the number of path increase, a considerable performance improvement can be attained.

  • In this paper, error performance of DS/CDMA GMSK system has been analyzed in a radio channel which is characterized by multi-user interference(MUI) and Nakagami fading. The DS/CDMA GMSK system adopts Maximum Ratio Combining(MRC) diversity and co-channel interference (CCI) to enhance system performance. Using the derived error probability equation, the error performance of DS/CDMA GMSK system has been evaluated and shown in figures to discuss as a function of PN code length(N), number of multi-user(K), number of diversity branch(L), and bit energy per noise power ratio ($E_b/N_0$), fading index(m). The results show that there is a substantial enhancement in performance by employing an MRC diversity or a CCI canceller. Additional improvement can be obtained when the MRC diversity and the CCI canceller are adopted in cascade form. Consequently, we expected that proposed system structure is reliable to the voice communication system in Nakagami fading, multi-user interferences and multipath channel.

  • Spectrum sensing is one of the most important functions in cognitive radio systems. In this paper, we focus on reducing the sensing time in a cooperative spectrum sensing paradigm. In the proposed scheme, a sequential detection technique is employed to provide a robust and quick detection system. Each of the secondary users measures the log-likelihood probability of the received signals and then sequentially reports to the base station. Here, the maximum ratio combining (MRC) technique is employed to reduce the average sample number (ASN) in order to reduce the sensing time. This proposed scheme is analyzed and simulated to illustrate the performance in comparison with the other given methods. Analysis and simulation are provided to validate the proposed method.

  • In order to extend cell coverage and to cope with shadow areas, a relay-assisted wireless communications system has been widely studied. In this paper, we propose new equalization method for single carrier (SC) frequency domain equalizer (FDE) in amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying multi-path networks to improve the performance at shadow areas. The performance of SC-FDE system in 3-slot based multi-path networks can be improved considerably with the diversity gain which we obtain by equalizing the combined signal from relays by means of the minimum mean square error (MMSE) criteria. We find the weighting coefficients of maximum ratio combining (MRC) and the tap coefficients of MMSE equalizer for SC-FDE in AF relaying multi-path networks. Simulation results show that the proposed system considerably outperforms the conventional SC-FDE system.

  • The paper considers a spectrum sharing cognitive radio (CR) network coexisting with a primary network under the average interference power constraint. In particular, the secondary user (SU) is assumed to carry delay-sensitive services and thus shall satisfy a given delay quality-of-service (QoS) constraint. The secondary receiver is also assumed to be equipped with multiple antennas to perform maximal ratio combining (MRC) to enhance SU performance. We investigate the effective capacity of the SU with MRC diversity under aforementioned constraints in Nakagami fading environments. Particularly, we derive the optimal power allocation to achieve the maximum effective capacity of the SU, and further derive the effective capacity in closed-form. In addition, we further obtain the closed-form expressions for the effective capacities under three widely used power and rate adaptive transmission schemes, namely, optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation (opra), truncated channel inversion with fixed rate (tifr) and channel inversion with fixed rate without truncation (cifr). Numerical results supported by simulations are presented to consolidate our studies. The impacts on the effective capacity of various system parameters such as the number of antennas, the average interference power constraint and the delay QoS constraint are investigated in detail. It is shown that MRC diversity can significantly improve the effective capacity of the SU especially for cifr transmission scheme.

  • In this paper, we analyze the block error performance of the CDMA system, whose information data are spread spectrum with PN sequences, and the chip signals are modulated with BPSK signal, combining MRC(Maximum Ratio Combine) diversity techniques with repetition transmission, FEC(Forward Error Correction) code in mobile communication channel which is characterized by Nakagami fading. As a results of study, the coding techniques provide more efficient improvement than a diversity techniques, but coding techniques are required the adding bandwidth as many coding rate. Also, when the system is combined MRC diversity techniques with coding techniques, the amount of improvement is dramatically increased.
