  • In this paper, we deal with the uniqueness problem for the power of p-adic meromorphic functions. The results obtained in this paper are the p-adic analogues and supplements of the theorems given by Yang and Zhang [Non-existence of meromorphic solution of a Fermat type functional equation, Aequationes Math. 76(2008), 140-150], Chen, Chen and Li [Uniqueness of difference operators of meromorphic functions, J. Ineq. Appl. 2012(2012), Art 48], Zhang [Value distribution and shared sets of differences of meromorphic functions, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 367(2010), 401-408].

  • Based on moments inequalities new testing procedures are derived for testing exponentiality against new renewal better than used (NRBU) and renewal new better than used (RNBU). These classes play an important role in formulating repair or replacement policies. The asymptotic Pitman efficiency of (NRBU) and (RNBU) testes are studied. Selected critical values are tabulated for sample sizes n=5(1) 50. The power estimates for some commonly used life distributions in reliability are also calculated. Some set of real data is used as an example to elucidate the use of the proposed test statistic for practical reliability analysis. The problem in case of right-censored data is also handled.

  • We surveyed statistically the freshmen's achievement of the first year mathematics courses in Kwangwoon University, which were opened at the first semester of academic year 2006. In doing so, we classified the freshmen according to the Mathematical Area 'ga' or 'na' and the Natural Science or Social Science Area of Korean Scholastic Aptitude Test(KSAT) which they have chosen. We found that the freshmen who have chosen the Mathematical Area 'na' and the Social Science Area have the serious problem in studying the freshmen's math courses.

  • With the advent of the information society, image restoration technology has aroused considerable interest. Guided image filtering is more effective in suppressing noise in homogeneous regions, but its edge-preserving property is poor. As such, the critical part of guided filtering lies in the selection of the guided image. The result of the Expected Patch Log Likelihood (EPLL) method maintains a good structure, but it is easy to produce the ladder effect in homogeneous areas. According to the complementarity of EPLL with guided filtering, we propose a method of coupling EPLL and guided filtering for image de-noising. The EPLL model is adopted to construct the guided image for the guided filtering, which can provide better structural information for the guided filtering. Meanwhile, with the secondary smoothing of guided image filtering in image homogenization areas, we can improve the noise suppression effect in those areas while reducing the ladder effect brought about by the EPLL. The experimental results show that it not only retains the excellent performance of EPLL, but also produces better visual effects and a higher peak signal-to-noise ratio by adopting the proposed method.

  • In this study, contents of programming curriculum were designed as instrumental subjects for scientifically gifted students, not for IT gifted ones. Firstly, the programming curriculum consisted of 3 sections; Programming Understanding, Object-Oriented Programming, and Simulation Programming as a result of two semesters. Then, the lectures including project-based and problem-solving tasks were given to scientifically gifted students in a high school during one semester to verify whether they could apply the contents to studies and researches in math or science or not. As a result of this study, the students could improve numerical analysis and simulation program development capabilities in math or science as well as the problem-solving ability based on computational thinking. Moreover, it was proved that the students changed their perception about programing learning. They started to think that programing learning was necessary to studies and researches in math or science. The results of this study propose guideline to design programming curriculum as instrumental subjects for scientifically gifted students.

  • Currently, information society is rapidly changing and demands innovation and creativity in various fields. Therefore, the importance of mathematics, which can be the basis of creativity and logic, is emphasized. The purpose of this paper is to develop a math education application that can further expand the logical thinking of mathematics and allow voluntary learning to occur through the use of readily available teaching aid for children to form motivation and interest in learning. This paper provides math education applications using a smartphone and blocks for children. The main function of the application is to shoot with the camera and show the calculated values. When a child uses a block to make a formula and shoots a block using a camera, you can directly see the calculated value of your formula. The preprocessing process, text extraction, and character recognition of the photographed images have been implemented using OpenCV libraries and Tesseract-OCR libraries.

  • This study explores the impact of a STEM integration teacher professional development program focusing on teachers' perception of engineering and their attitudes toward integrating engineering into teaching. A total of sixty-eight teachers from ten schools participated in the program for five days. Data are collected from three main sources including (1) pre and post concept maps probing teachers' perceptions about the engineering discipline, (2) a pre and post survey measuring teachers' self-efficacy of teaching science/mathematics within the engineering context, and (3) engineering integrated science and (or) mathematics lesson plans and teaching reflections. This study utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research methods depending on the data we have collected. The results show that both science and math teachers thought that integrating engineering into teaching provided valuable outcomes, i.e., promoting students' learning about engineering and improving their interest in science or math through real-world problem solving exercises. Participants also felt more comfortable about integrating engineering in their teaching after the program. The results also imply that the teachers' understandings of engineering become more concrete after the program. This study also provides an overview of the challenges and advantages of teaching engineering in K-12 science and mathematics classrooms.

  • Clustering is widely used in various fields in order to investigate structural characteristics of the given data. One of the main tasks of clustering is to partition a set of objects into homogeneous groups for the purpose of data reduction. In this paper a simple but computationally efficient clustering procedure is devised and some statistical techniques to validate its clustered results are discussed. In the given procedure, the proper number of clusters and the clustered groups can be determined simultaneously. The whole procedure is applied to a practical clustering problem for the classification of reusable fuels in nuclear power plants.
