  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to maternal nursing in early postpartum stage and to neonatal nursing. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires which were constructed to include parental role stress scale, state-trait anxiety scale, and perception of the newborn scale. The subjects consisted of 100 mothers in the early postpartum stage at three hospitals in the Kyoung-In area, from November 8 to December 26, 1997. The data were analyzed by an SPSS program. The results are as follows ; 1. The mean of parental role stress of mothers in the early postpartum stage was 10.70$\pm$2.63. The means of state anxiety and trait anxiety of mothers were 36.29$\pm$8.45 and 38.53$\pm$8.36. The mean of perception of the newborn was 2.65$\pm$5.05, and 59% of mothers rated their newborn as better than the average newborn. 2. The level of parental role stress correlated to the level of state anxiety and trait anxiety. The level of state anxiety and trait anxiety were also related. The level of perception of the newborn was related to the level of state anxiety and trait anxiety. 3. Mothers who did not want the pregnancy, whose newborns were girls, and who already had one child had higher state anxiety than those who did not. Mothers who already had one child, and whose newborn had no specific signs had higher trait anxiety than those who did not. Mothers who professed a religions had a higher perception of the newborn than those who did not. The above findings indicate that the levels of parental role stress, state anxiety, trait anxiety and perception of the newborn of mothers in early postpartum stage were correlated. Therefore nursing intervention for reducing stress and anxiety, and improving perception of the newborn should be provided for mothers in early postpartum stage.

  • This study was to examine the role for children's prosocial behavior in terms of maternal parenting behavior, smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors. The study sample was 537 children who had participated in the tenth wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. The data were analyzed for descriptive statistics, correlation, and serial multiple mediation analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that the direct effect of maternal parenting behavior on children's prosocial behavior was not significant. Second, in the relationship between the maternal parenting behavior and the children's prosocial behavior, the mediating effects of smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors were significant, respectively. Third, in the effect of maternal parenting behavior on children's prosocial behavior, it was found that smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors mediate it in series. These results provide to a better understanding of the process between maternal parenting behavior to children's prosocial behavior and especially emphasize the importance of smart-media addiction and ADHD-related behaviors.

  • The effects of conflicted teacher-child relation on conflicted or passive peer interaction and a moderation effect of mothers' interpersonal relation satisfaction on the associations were assessed. Children from 2- to 6-year-olds (184 girls, 185 boys) mostly from middle socioeconomic-status urban community in Korea and their teachers and mothers participated. Conflicted teacher-child relation predicted conflicted peer interaction but not passive peer interaction. Children, whose relationship with teachers were conflicted, engaged in conflicted play with peers more often than children who were in less conflicted relationship with the teachers. Teachers who were in conflicted relationship with the children, perceived the children having conflicted interaction with peers more often, if mothers of the children were less satisfying in relationship with significant others, especially boys. Children, whose mothers are in less satisfying interpersonal relation with others, were more passive in peer interaction than children whose mothers are in more satisfying interpersonal relationship.

  • This study was conducted to find some differences in infant feeding pattems between well educated Koreans and local populations living in Texas, USA. Initiation rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the hospital was 35.9% in Koreans and 60.4% in Americans. At 2, 4 and 6 months, exclusive breastfeeding rates were 34.0%, 20.8% and 13.2% for Koreans and 47.2%, 34.0% and 27.2% for Americans respectively. There was a significant difference in age of weaning from breast between these two groups(p<0.01). In Koreans the most common reason for the early termination before 4 months was maternal report of milk insufficiency. 55.6% of Koreans and 42.3% of Americans fed infants on scheduled rather on demand feeding. Primary sources of advice about feeding were medical professionals in Americans while baby's grandmother was the main source in Koreans. In Americans, choice of breastfeeding was not associated with ethnicity, maternal education, and family income in the study. Interventions to promote and support participants of Women Infants and Children(WIC) may play a role in Americans. It might be suggested that effective nutrition education programs targeting for Korean mothers to promote breastfeeding should be needed urgently and systematically.

  • Whole genome sequencing (WGS)-based noninvasive prenatal test (NIPT) is the first method applied in the clinical setting out of various NIPT techniques. Several companies, such as Sequenom, BGI, and Illumina offer WGS-based NIPT, each with different technical and bioinformatic approaches. Sequenom, BGI, and Illumina utilize z-, t-, and L-scores, as well as normalized chromosome values, respectively, for trisomy detection. Their outstanding performance has been demonstrated in clinical studies of more than 100,000 pregnancies. The sensitivity and specificity for detection of trisomies 13, 18, and 21 were above 98%, as reported by all three companies. Unlike other techniques, WGS-based NIPT can detect other trisomies as well as clinically significant segmental duplications/deletions within a chromosome, which could expand the scope of NIPT. Incorrect results could be due to low fetal fraction, fetoplacental mosaicism, confined placental mosaicism or maternal copy number variation (CNV). Among those, maternal CNV is a significant contributor of false positive results and therefore genome wide scanning plays an important role in preventing the occurrence of false positives. In this article, the bioinformatic techniques and clinical performance of three major companies are comprehensively reviewed.

  • In the early neonatal period, the neonate is challenged by the loss of the placental calcium transport and manifests a quick transition, from an environment in which PTHrP plays an important role to a PTH- and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D-controlled neonatal milieu. Disturbances in mineral homeostasis are common in the neonatal period, especially in premature infants and infants who are hospitalized in an intensive care unit. In many cases these disturbances are thought to be exaggerated responses to the normal physiological transition from the intrauterine environment to neonatal independence. Some disturbances in calcium and phosphate homeostasis are the result of genetic defects, which in many instances can now be identified at the molecular level. Although fetus develop remarkably normally in the presence of maternal calcium, PTH and vitamin D deficiency, the neonates demonstrate abnormalities that are consequences of the prior abnormal maternal calcium homeostasis. Evaluation and management of hypocalcemia and hypercalcemia in neonate requires specific knowledge of perinatal mineral physiology and the unique clinical and biochemical features of newborn mineral metabolism.

  • Multiple features of infant day-care are explored, including age of entry, quantity, quality and stability of day-care. And relative contribution of day-care and family factors on maternal behaviors are examined. Data were gathered from 299 mothers who have infants aged under 36 months using self-report questionnaires. Results show that more than 40% infants enter day-care before 6 months of their life and about 85% of infants have far more than 30 hours of care a week. Half of the infants experience different day-care arrangements more than once. Compared to the other types of day-care, frequency of day-care arrangement change and quality of care are highest in private child-care centers. A series of Hierarchical regression results reveal that quality of day care is negatively related to mothers' control behavior whereas positively related to mothers' responsive behavior. But in general, family and child characteristics play a greater role in mothers' parenting behaviors than infant day-care characteristics.
