  • This paper deals with introduction of testing equipments for the evaluation of dynamic tensile characteristics of auto-body steel sheets and the crashworthiness of auto-body members. The servo-hydraulic high speed material testing machine was developed for tensile tests at the intermediate strain rate to obtain the tensile material properties at the strain rate under 500/sec. The split Hopkinson bar apparatus using the elastic wave was developed for dynamic material characteristics at the high strain rate ranged from 1,000 to 10,000/sec. The servo-hydraulic high speed crash testing machine is the equipment for the evaluation of the collapse load and crashworthiness of auto-body members. High speed carrying truck crashes to specimen with the maximum velocity of 17 m/sec.

  • Since the late 1990's, FAA, NASA and the aerospace industry have worked together to develop the sharing system of the composite material qualification databases which were obtained through the standardized fabrication and testing procedures. The result was what is now known as the AGATE(Advanced General Aviation Transport Experiments) or NCAMP(National Center for Advanced Materials Performance) methodology, a more cost-effective concept that shifts the major responsibility for qualification and testing from the aircraft manufacturer to the material supplier. The properties of composite materials are largely dependent on the testing as well as the raw material properties and the manufacturing process including the process control parameters. Thus it is important in the composite material qualification to comply with the standardized testing procedures. In this paper, I will describe the standardized witness methodologies of certification engineers to reduce the effect of testing variability within the qualification data.

  • European Material Test Reactors (MTRs) have provided essential support for nuclear power programs over the last 40 years. MTRs are now ageing in Europe and they cannot ensure the securing of experimental capability for the next decades. In this context, a new Material Testing Reactor, named Jules Horowitz Reactor -JHR-, operated as an international user-facility, is under development in Europe. The European MTRs context and the JHR objectives and status will be presented. Emphasis will be put on experiments in the field of nuclear fuels and materials irradiation which are developed in the framework of European and international collaboration.

  • In the hope of realizing carbon neutrality, Korea has established the goal of expanding the supply of hydrogen electric vehicles through a roadmap to revitalize the hydrogen economy. A prerequisite for successful supply expansion is securing the safety of hydrogen electric vehicles. Certain parts, such as the hydrogen transport pipe and tank, in hydrogen electric vehicles are exposed to high-pressure hydrogen gas over long periods of time, so the hydrogen enters the grain boundary of material, resulting in a degradation of the parts referred to as hydrogen embrittlement. In addition, since the safety of parts utilizing hydrogen varies depending on the type of material used and its environmental characteristics, the necessity for the enactment of a hydrogen embrittlement regulation has emerged and is still being discussed as a Global Technical Regulation (GTR). In this paper, we analyze a hydrogen compatibility material evaluation method discussed in GTR and present a direction for the development of Korean-type hydrogen compatibility material evaluation methods.

  • When no extensometer is available in a generic tensile-compression test carried out by a universal testing machine (for instance the model BIONIX from Material Testing Systems (MTS)), the test results only provide the relative displacement between the machine grips. The test does not provide any information on the local behaviour of the material. This contribution presents the potential of an application of Digital Image Correlation (DIC) toward the reconstruction of the behaviour along the specimen. In particular, the authors test a Ni-Ti shape memory alloys (SMA) specimen with emphasis on the coupling of the two measurement techniques.

  • Material damping is an important parameter to evaluate the site response by a dynamic loading. Currently the material damping of the subgrade is mainly determined by a resonant column testing. Typical methods to evaluate material damping include half-power bandwidth method and free-vibration decay method. In the large strain range, the half-power bandwidth method gives an erratic damping factor, because the method is based on the assumption of the linear behavior of a specimen. The free-vibration decay method has also limitations in that the damping factors vary with the range of cycles in calculation, and also in that the specific shear strain can not be designated for the free vibration. In this study, the frequency-phase method, which was developed to evaluate material damping of a beam simply supported, is introduced to evaluate the material damping by the resonant column testing. Also, the comparison among half-power method, free-vibration decay method and the frequency-phase method is provided for a remolded sand.

  • By using numerical analysis methods, through transmission type pulsed eddy current (PEC) testing is modeled and PEC signal responses due to varying material conductivity, permeability, thickness, lift-off and pulse width are investigated. Results show that the peak amplitude of PEC signal gets reduced and the time to reach the peak amplitude is increased as the material conductivity, permeability, and specimen thickness increase. Also, they indicate that the pulse width needs to be shorter when evaluating the material conductivity and the plate thickness using the peak amplitude, and when the pulse width is long, the peak time is found to be more useful. Other results related to lift-off variation are reported as well.

  • This article presents a newly developed equipment system for computer-aided, magneto-inductive testing of metals for material properties. The advantages of ultramodern computer technology over conventional test mothods are illustrated, in particular the greatly simplified equipment adjustment and the extended possibilities of test data evaluation. The characterisitics of the new system of equipment are demonstrated by way of practical testing examples.
