This paper presents a 900 MHz zero-IF RF transceiver for IEEE 802.15.4g Smart Utility Networks OFDM systems. The proposed RF transceiver comprises an RF front end, a Tx baseband analog circuit, an Rx baseband analog circuit, and a ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ fractional-N frequency synthesizer. In the RF front end, re-use of a matching network reduces the chip size of the RF transceiver. Since a T/Rx switch is implemented only at the input of the low noise amplifier, the driver amplifier can deliver its output power to an antenna without any signal loss; thus, leading to a low dc power consumption. The proposed current-driven passive mixer in Rx and voltage-mode passive mixer in Tx can mitigate the IQ crosstalk problem, while maintaining 50% duty-cycle in local oscillator clocks. The overall Rx-baseband circuits can provide a voltage gain of 70 dB with a 1 dB gain control step. The proposed RF transceiver is implemented in a $0.18{\mu}$ CMOS technology and consumes 37 mA in Tx mode and 38 mA in Rx mode from a 1.8 V supply voltage. The fabricated chip shows a Tx average power of -2 dBm, a sensitivity level of -103 dBm at 100 Kbps with PER < 1%, an Rx input $P_{1dB}$ of -11 dBm, and an Rx input IP3 of -2.3 dBm.

This paper presents development of a small size LNA operating at 824 ∼ 849 MHz used for a receiver of a CELLULAR CDMA Base station and a transponder. Using resistive decoupling circuits, a signal at low frequency is dissipated by a resistor. This design method increases the stability of the LNA and is suitable for input stage matching. The LNA consists of low noise GaAs FET ATF-10136 and internally matched VNA-25. The LNA is fabricated with both the RF circuit and the self-bias circuits in aluminum housing. As a result, the characteristics of the LNA implemented here shows above 35dB in gain and below 0.9dB in noise figure, 18.6dBm P1dB power, a typical two tone IM3, -31.17dB with single carrier backed off 10dB from P1dB.

A power line coupler that can apply high-frequency power to a railway overhead line structure was analyzed. It is difficult to supply auxiliary power to an overhead line in a high-voltage environment, and doing so requires a long-distance transfer. A method is proposed that utilizes the resonance on the Rogowski coil, which does not use a magnetic core. A simple overhead line structure was fabricated that consisted of a contact wire, messenger wire, and dropper. Couplers of various sizes were fabricated and deployed on the messenger wire, and the transfer characteristics of the two couplers were compared at a distance. As a result of applying the matching circuit to the coupler, the transmission efficiency was 53% at a distance of 2.5 m. The proposed method shows that it is possible to apply the auxiliary power by using the existing conductor in a special structure, such as the overhead line.

We propose non-DC-free generalized PRML (GPRML) that are suppressed DC contents for matching to the response of perpendicular magnetic recording channel with a ring-head. In addition, DC-free encoding is considered to prevent low-frequency disturbances. The SNR performance is obtained by combining the various PRML channels with DC-free and non-DC-free codes during the normalized recording density increases from 2.5 to 3.5. The GPRML detections without using DC-free code get SNR gains more than 1dB compared to the conventional PRML systems at 10/sup -5/BER. We confirmed that the rate 127/136 DC-free coded GPRML systems show good performances compared with the 16/17 non-DC-free coded GPRML systems. In results, DC-free coded GPRML detections get gains about 1.4dB and 2.0dB at the density of 3.3 and 3.5, respectively.

A Simple equivalent circuit model is developed for a wireless energy transfer system via coupled magnetic resonances and a practical design method is also provided. Node equations for the resonance system are built with the method, expanding on the equations for a transformer, and the optimum distances of coils in the system are derived analytically for optimum coupling coefficients for high transfer efficiency. In order to calculate the frequency characteristics for a lossy system, the equivalent model is established at an electric design automation tool. The model parameters of the actual system are extracted and the modeling results are compared with measurements. Through the developed model, it is seen that the system can transfer power over a mid-range of a few meters and impedance matching is important to achieve high efficiency. This developed model can be used for a design and prediction on the similar systems such as increasing the number of receiving coils and receiving modules, etc.
Motion of object in a video clip often plays an important role in characterizing the content of the clip. A number of methods have been developed to analyze and retrieve video contents using motion information. However, most of these methods focused more on the analysis of direction or trajectory of motion but less on the analysis of the movement of an object itself. In this paper, we propose the shape sequence descriptor to describe and compare the movement based on the shape deformation caused by object motion along the time. A movement information is first represented a sequence of 2D shape of object extracted from input image sequence, and then 2D shape information is converted 1D shape feature using the shape descriptor. The shape sequence descriptor is obtained from the shape descriptor sequence by frequency transform along the time. Our experiment results show that the proposed method can be very simple and effective to describe the object movement and can be applicable to semantic applications such as content-based video retrieval and human movement recognition.

In this study, the plasma induced by $CO_2$ laser lap welding of 6t Zn coated steel used for ship building was measured using photodiodes and a microphone. Then, the welding phenomenon with gap clearance of lap joint was compared with RMS-treated signal. Thus, we found that intensity of the RMS-treated signal increased with Zn vaporization; further, the presence of defects results in rapid variations with the RMS value as a function of lap-joint parameters. Besides, the FFT value of the raw signal with variations of changing welding parameters was calculated, and then the calculated FFT frequency value was set as the bandwidth of digital filter for a more accurate in-process monitoring. The RMS values were acquired by filtering the raw signal. By matching the weld beads and the calculated RMS values, we confirmed that there is a strong relationship between the signals and the defects.
Normalized cross-correlation (correlation coefficient) is a useful measure for pattern matching in PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) analysis. Because it does not have a corresponding simple expression in frequency domain, several fast but inexact measures have been used. Among them, three measures of correlation for PIV analysis and the normalized cross-correlation were evaluated with a sample calculation. The test revealed that all other proposed correlation measures sometimes show inaccurate results, except the normalized cross-correlation. However, correlation coefficient method has a weakpoint that it requires so long time for calculation. To overcome this shortcoming, a fast and exact method for calculating normalized cross-correlation is suggested. It adopts Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) for calculation of covariance and the successive-summing method for the denominator of correlation coefficient. The new algorithm showed that it is really fast and exact in calculating correlation coefficient.
In the present study, a microstrip-fed monopole antenna is proposed for wireless local area network (WLAN) operations which cover dual band of 2.4 GHz (2.4 ~ 2.484 GHz) and 5 GHz (5.15 ~ 5.825 GHz). In order to obtain its compact structure and good omnidirectional radiation patterns, a modified inverted L-shaped slot separated from ground for impedance matching in 5 GHz band is etched on 2.4 GHz printed monopole antenna. The proposed antenna is designed and fabricated on a FR4 substrate with dielectric constant 4.3, thickness of 1.6 mm, and size of $30{\times}45mm^2$. The measured impedance bandwidths (${\mid}S_{11}{\mid}{\leq}-10dB$) of fabricated antenna are 270 MHz (2.22 ~ 2.48 GHz) in 2.4 GHz band and 890 MHz (5.08 ~ 5.97 GHz) in 5 GHz band respectively. In particular, high gain of more than about 4 dBi and good omnidirectional radiation patterns have been observed over the entire frequency band of interest.

This paper presents a bandpass filter using a current differencing transconductance amplifier (CDTA)s for application to low-voltage and low-power analog signal processing systems. The presented filter employs grounding and floating active inductors, which are composed of two or three CDTAs, and is capable of realizing all the standard functions of the filter without requiring any component matching criteria or extra active components. The HSPICE simulation result of the designed active bandpass filter showed that it had a 10MHz center frequency with -2.5dB attenuated bandwidth from 9.5 MHz to 10.5 MHz, and -50dB from 8 MHz to 17 MHz.
