Carbon dioxide emission estimation methods consist of four tiers according to the IPCC guideline. In this study, estimated results by tier 3 and tier 4 were compared with the theoretically calculated $CO_2$ emissions based on the mass balance approach for a gas fired power plant between March and May 2011. It was found that the relative differences were upto 17% between the measured emissions by tier 4 and theoretically estimated emissions, while the results of tier 3 were similar to those from theoretically estimated ones. The comparisons suggested the possibility of misestimation due to replacing missing, abnormal, or invalid data in continuous emissions monitoring system. When using only the data without those missing, abnormal, or invalid data, the relative differences decreased somewhat but still showed consistent differences depending on the stack. It is suggested that this differences might be due to the accuracy of the measurement instruments for the tier 4, especially, for the flow rate measurement instrument.
Nitrogen budgets in Sihwa-ho in 2010 were estimated using a mass balance approach. Major nitrogen fluxes sources can be divided into three sections: cities, agricultural area, and forest. Surplus nitrogen 2,030~2,214 ton/yr (2,123 ton/yr in average) was discharged to Sihwa Lake. 20% of the surplus nitrogen is removed from the wetland and 60% is removed tidal flats. Therefore net nitrogen discharge from Sihwa basin is estimated to be 650~708 ton/yr (679 ton/yr in average). Wet and dry nitrogen deposition and load from non-point sources ware estimated to be 97 ton/yr and 69 ton/yr, deposition is using CAMx model. So estimated total nitrogen discharge into Sihwa-ho was 817~875 ton/yr (846 ton/yr in average). The atmospheric load explains 11.1~11.9% (11.5% in average) of the total nitrogen load Sihwa-ho.
Litterfall dynamics in forests are assessed by estimating biomass production and decomposition. However, there have been few studies on how litter dynamics impact the health and management of ecosystems. Here, a new approach to measure and assess ecosystem function is presented based on conventional methods using littertraps, litterbags, and the mass on the forest floor. To assess the status of litter dynamics, the decay rate (k) was estimated from a litterbag experiment, and removal rates ($k_i$) were determined from mass balance on the forest floor at 21 sites on three mountains in South Korea. The $k_3$ (organic mass ratio of $O_i$ and $O_e+O_a$ + A horizons in November) values in an equilibrium state in South Korea were within the range of $k{\pm}0.174$ when considering the annual variation of litterfall production. This study also suggests that sampling sites for these types of studies should be in the middle, not at the ends, of steady slopes on the forest floor.
Nitrogen budgets in Korea in 2005 were estimated using a mass balance approach. Major nitrogen fluxes were divided into three section: cites, agricultural area, and forest. It contains nitrogen input 21 precent more than the previous research in 2002. Especially the change of government plans affect nitrogen budget.

The dynamic stability of a single cam drive mechanism is investigated by an analytical approach. The nonlinear differential equation describing the motion of a single cam drive mechanism is linearized with respect to the imput power angle, and results a linear parametric differential equation. The instability region is examined by applying the harmonic balance method to linearized parametric equation having periodicity. Through the dynamic stability analysis of a single cam drive mechanism, it is observed that the parametric resonances exist and the instability regions tend to become wide as increasing the drive speed and follower mass.

The potential of ecosystem-based fisheries management is recently recognized to be very important to improve the sustainability of fisheries resources. Under the depressed condition of many fisheries resources, this recognition has been expanded and more effort has been taken to improve this approach. Taking ecosystem concept includes the use of other tools of management in addition to fisheries regulation, such as stock and productivity enhancement, provision of physical structure, or marine protected areas. In the ecosystem-based fisheries management approach, it would require to holistically consider ecological interactions of target species with predators, competitors, and prey species, the effects of climate on fisheries ecology, the complex interactions between fishes and their habitat, and the effects of fishing on fish stocks and their ecosystem. Fisheries management based upon the understanding of these factors can prevent significant and potentially irreversible changes in marine ecosystems caused by fishing. A useful approach for analyzing tropho-dynamic interactions and mass-balance in marine ecosystems is introduced to demonstrate the complexity and usefulness of the ecosystem approach, which was applied to a small ecosystem in Korea. Korea should seriously consider to take the ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management, since most major fish stocks are currently depleted due to many reasons such as overfishing, land reclamation and coastal pollution.

This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gasphase biofilters, and to propose a stoichiometric analysis approach to characterize biological reaction through carbon mass balance. The VOCs studied were toluene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as a single substrate for each biofilter. The critical loading rate was determined to be $46.9\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $25.8\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $96.3\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, and $66.5\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$ for toluene, styrene, MEK, and MIBK, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the critical loading rate was well correlated the octanol-water partition coefficient. In the analysis of carbon mass balance, carbon recovery to $CO_2$ became relatively lower as substrate loadings increased, but higher for carbon recovery to biomass. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that biomass yield increased as substrate loadings increased, and its coefficient (g biomass/g substrate) varied from 0.31 to 0.57 for toluene, 0.29 to 0.57 for styrene, 0.08 to 0.56 for MEK, and 0.14 to 0.53 for MIBK.
In two-fluid simulations of flow boiling, the modeling of the mean bubble diameter is a key parameter in the closure relations governing the intefacial transfer of mass, momentum, and energy. Monodispersed approach proved to be insufficient to describe the significant variation in bubble size during flow boiling in a heated pipe. A population balance model (PBM) has been employed to address these shortcomings. During nucleate boiling, vapor bubbles of a certain size are formed on the heated wall, detach and migrate into the bulk flow. These bubbles then grow, shrink or disintegrate by evaporation, condensation, breakage and aggregation. In this study, a parametric analysis of the PBM aggregation and breakage models has been performed to investigate their effect on the radial distribution of the mean bubble diameter and vapor volume fraction. The simulation results are compared with the DEBORA experiments (Garnier et al., 2001). In addition, the influence of PBM parameters on the local distribution of individual bubble size groups was also studied. The results have shown that the modeling of aggregation process has the largest influence on the results and is mainly dictated by the collisions due to flow turbulence.

Nitrogen budgets in Korea in 2005 were estimated using a mass balance approach. Major nitrogen fluxes were divided into three sections: cities, agricultural area, and forest. Nitrogen inputs were chemical and biological fixation, dry and wet deposition, imported food and feed, while crop uptake, volatilization, denitrification, leaching, runoff, and forest consumption were nitrogen outputs. Non-point source(NPS) pollution budgets were also estimated by mass balance approach. Annual total nitrogen inputs budgets were 1,442,254 ton$\cdot$yr$^{-1}$, and outputs were 814,415 ton$\cdot$yr$^{-1}$. Approximately 19.4% of nitrogen input leaked to river and seawater as NPS pollution. It contains nitrogen input 21 percent more than the previous research in 2002. Especially the change of government plans affect nitrogen budget. As a result, in the output field, the whole nitrogen amount due to landfill reduce from 20 percent to less than 1 percent.

A numerical study on swirling pulverized coal combustion in an axisymmetric enclosure is carried out by applying the 2-phase weighted sum of gray gases model (WSGGM) approach with the discrete ordinate method (DOM) to model the radiative heat transfer equation. In the radiative transfer equation, the same polynomial equation and coefficients for weighting factors as those for gas are adopted for the coal/char particles as a function of partial pressure and particle temperature. The Eulerian balance equations for mass, momentum, energy, and species mass fractions are adopted with the standard and RNG k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model, whereas the Lagrangian approach is used for the particulate phase. The eddy-dissipation model is employed for the reaction rate for gaseous mixture, and the single-step and two-step first-order reaction model for the devolatilization process for coal. Special attention is given to establish the thermal boundary conditions on radiative transfer equation By comparing the numerical results with experimental ones, the radiation model used here is confirmed and found to provide an alternative for simulating the radiative transfer.
