Normally, our ancestors traded with many countries, but they fought battles when they were on bad terms and many countries emerged and disappeared. In this history, a variety of cultures have been established and the traditional martial arts is a part of those cultures. Our martial arts has been almost severed because of the development of fire weapons in the late Chosun Dynasty, Japan's colonial rule, and 1950-53 Korean War. Fortunately, we can study the traditional martial arts from history books, the records on the martial art books and relics. Muyeadobotongji, the martial art book published in the late Chosun Dynasty, regrets the negligence of martial arts Giyae(arts) after Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 and the Manchu war of 1636 and accommodated the martial art skills from Chosun, China and Japan. It is useful for studying martial arts, because it contains detailed description and drawings, clothes and accessories, and the specification of the weapons. However, the problem is the level of Giyae of the martial arts organization and individuals based on Muyeadobotongji vary and some organizations are arguing about the numbers.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the views of Joseon held by Kano Jigoro, who was the creator of judo and spread the martial arts ideology across the world, to shed light on the fundamental essence of the martial arts ideology spread around Korea. Conducted in this perspective, the study generated the following results: first, Kano Jigoro grew up, receiving history education from classical scholars of Japan. He was accordingly influenced by the Seikanron, which argues that Empress Jingu, a mythical character, conquered Silla, Baekje and Gaya. The Seikanron became the basis of the Imna Ilbonbu theory during the Japanese rule and was projected onto martial arts ideas Jeongryeokseonyong and Jatagongyeong that were completed by Kano Jigoro and introduced into Joseon. Secondly, Kano Jigoro distributed and expanded the tale of statehood in the prism of martial arts ideology since the Meiji Restoration, which was possible because he connected his martial arts ideas to the statehood of Japan. As a result, they were used as the logic of Korea and Japan are One in Joseon unlike the rest of the world where they were applied as peace ideas. Finally, his martial arts ideology introduced into Joseon during the Japanese rule went through acculturation and showed the contradiction of being interpreted differently according to different individuals. Most Japanese people made use of his martial arts as a means of the Korea and Japan are One policy, whereas the pioneers of the Korean people excluded Kano Jigoro's view of state, included the nationalistic features in it, and trained their martial arts as a means of overcoming the national crisis.

  • This paper examines the history of karate, its utilization as military training, and its value as a national defense sport. Originating from Okinawa, karate was introduced into Japanese military training in the modern era and spread worldwide. During World War II, the Japanese military intensified karate training for close-quarters combat. Post-war, karate was introduced to Western society through the U.S. military presence in Japan. In contemporary militaries, various martial arts, including karate, are utilized in training programs such as the U.S. Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) and the Israeli military's Krav Maga. These programs integrate techniques from karate, judo, boxing, and other martial arts to create systems optimized for real combat. In military education, karate enhances individual physical and mental capabilities and improves unit combat effectiveness. Rigorous training develops physical fitness, mental resilience, and practical skills for close-quarters combat. Group training fosters camaraderie and unit cohesion. However, due to the changing nature of modern warfare, it is necessary to reconsider the proportion and methods of martial arts training in military education. With the advancement of high-tech weaponry, team operations have become more critical than individual combat skills. Rather than applying traditional karate techniques unchanged, it is essential to modify and develop them to suit modern warfare. Nevertheless, the value of martial arts training, including karate, remains significant in cultivating key soldier qualities such as physical strength, indomitable spirit, and camaraderie. It is anticipated that militaries worldwide will continue to evolve their martial arts training systems in line with changing times.
