『동과 서의 만남』에 나타난 이민자들의 로맨스와 혼종화 (Immigrants' Romance and Hybridity in Younghill Kang's East Goes West)

  • This paper focuses on how Younghill Kang internalizes whiteness ideology through interracial romance to build himself as an oriental Yankee and recover his masculinity in his autobiographical novel East Goes West. This paper also focuses on Kang's strategy of racial and cultural hybridity presented in this novel. The theoretical basis of my argument is a mixture of Fanon's psychoanalysis in his Black Skin, White Masks, Bhabha's notion of mimicry in The Location of Culture, and notions related to race and gender of some Asian critics such as Patricia Chu, Jinqi Ling, and Lisa Lowe. In East Goes West, white women appear as "ladder of success" of successful assimilation and serve as cultural mediators and instructors and sometimes adversaries who Korean male immigrants have to win to establish identities in which Americanness, ethnicity, and masculinity are integrated. However, three Korean men, Chungpa Han, To Wan Kim, George Jum, who fall in love with white women fail to win their beloveds in marriage. George Jum fails to sustain a white dancer, Jun' interest. Kim wins the affection of Helen Hancock, a New England lady, but Kim commits suicide when he knows Helen killed herself because her family doesn't approve their relationship. Han's love for Trip remains vague, but Kang implies Han will continue his quest for "the spiritual home" as the name of "Trip." In East Goes West, Kang also attempts to challenge the imagining of a pure, monolithic, and naturalized white dominant U.S. Culture by exploring the cultural and racial hybridity shown by June and the various scenes of Halem in the 1920s. June who works for a Harlem cabaret is a white woman but she wears dark makeup. Kang questions the white face of America's self-understanding and racial constitution of a unified white American culture through June's racial masquerade. Kang shows that like Asian and black Americans, the white American also has an ambivalent racial identity through June's black mimicry and there is no natural and unchanging essence behind one's gender and race identity constitution.

"Þat louely foode": Relationships between Mothers-and Daughters-in-law in Floris and Blancheflour and the Constance Romances

  • In this essay, I compare the ways in which the mid-thirteenth century English romance, Floris and Blancheflour, represents relationships of the Spanish pagan queen to her adoptive Christian daughter who becomes her daughter-in-law, with the ways in which Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale and other so-called Constance romances delineate relationships between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. What draws me into these romances is the fact that they both convey the intergenerational relationships of women. However, the texts become distinct from each other in the way in which each depicts women characters and their relationships with one another. In this paper, I argue that the level of intimacy that the mother-in-law figure has with the daughter-in-law figure plays a defining role in making the former perform her agency for or against the latter. In the Man of Law's Tale and other Constance romances, the daughter-in-law figure is in every sense an alien or 'outsider' to the mother-in-law figure. To the contrary, Blancheflour in Floris is a sort of 'insider' to the queen because they lived in the same household for fourteen years-ever since the girl's birth. The queen, therefore, should have a high degree of intimacy with Blancheflour. I argue that the pagan queen's intimacy to the daughter of a Christian-European captive has enabled the queen to protect the girl as her adoptive daughter first and as a daughter-in-law second, namely contributing to her unreserved endorsement of the inter-racial-religious-class union between her only son, Floris, and Blancheflour. This is one major factor that distinguishes the relationship of the queen and Blancheflour in Floris from the dysfunctional relationships of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law in the late medieval Constance romances, where women of different generations are strangers to each other, and no way is imagined for women of different races and religions to get along with each other.

한국어판 부부 만족도 측정도구 및 단축형의 타당도와 신뢰도 (Validity and Reliability of the Korean Version of the Couple Satisfaction Index)

  • Purpose: The study aimed to translate the Couple Satisfaction Index (CSI 32) into Korean, to evaluate the reliability and validity of CSI 32 and short-form (CSI 16, 4) in the Korean context, and to determine a cut-off score for Korean couples. Methods: Korean Versions of the Couple Satisfaction Index (K-CSI) 32 was translated, back-translated, and reviewed by five bilingual experts. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted with data from a sample of 218 couples (N = 436) to test construct validity. Validity and reliability were evaluated. The receiver's operating characteristics curve analysis was used to obtain the cut-off score. Results: The construct validities of K-CSI 32, 16, and 4 were verified using one-factor structures. The results of CFA showed a slightly better fit for K-CSI 16 and 4 than for K-CSI 32. Convergent validity was supported by significant positive correlations of K-CSI with Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale, Dyadic Adjustment Scale, and Family Relationship Assessment Scale. Moreover, the significant differences in K-CSI between normal and depressive group demonstrated known-group validity. Cut-off scores of 105.5 on K-CSI 32, 50.25 on K-CSI 16, and 13.25 on K-CSI 4 were validated to identify distressed couple relationships. Conclusion: For clinical practice, the reliable and valid K-CSI 32 has the potential to measure changes in couple satisfaction after couple therapy or interventions. Applying K-CSI 32 may facilitate research on couple and family relationships in nursing and contribute to the discussion on the role of couple satisfaction in mental health.

북한이탈주민의 고문으로 인한 외상 후 충격에 영향을 미치는 요인 (A Study on the recovery predictive factors for North Korean refugees with torture experience)

  • 본 연구는 고문을 경험한 북한이탈주민들을 대상으로 그들의 인구사회학적 요인, 정신건강·개인의 성격적 요인, 사회적·경제적 요인들이 고문으로 인한 외상 후 충격에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 밝혀 봄으로써 난민이주자를 접촉하는 정신건강전문가로서 인식해야할 치료적 요인들을 확인하고 실천적 기술을 제시하고자 하였다. 결과적으로 여성인 경우, 연령이 많을수록, 북한에 자녀가 있는 경우, 만성질병의 수가 증가할수록, 과거 북한이나 중국에서 결혼 경험이 있는 경우 고문으로 인한 외상 후 충격에 유의한 차이를 보였다. 또한 우울, 반추, 자기효능감, 탄력성, 안정애착, 남한사람의 사회적 지지, 경제적 걱정이 고문으로 인한 외상 후 충격에 영향을 미치는 예측요인으로 밝혀졌다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 정신건강전문가와 고문 외상을 경험한 북한이탈주민 클라이언트와의 치료적 관계 형성의 중요성과 치유과정을 함축적으로 제시하였다.

설명 가능한 인공지능을 이용한 지역별 출산율 차이 요인 분석 (Analysis of Regional Fertility Gap Factors Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence)

  • Korea is facing a significant problem with historically low fertility rates, which is becoming a major social issue affecting the economy, labor force, and national security. This study analyzes the factors contributing to the regional gap in fertility rates and derives policy implications. The government and local authorities are implementing a range of policies to address the issue of low fertility. To establish an effective strategy, it is essential to identify the primary factors that contribute to regional disparities. This study identifies these factors and explores policy implications through machine learning and explainable artificial intelligence. The study also examines the influence of media and public opinion on childbirth in Korea by incorporating news and online community sentiment, as well as sentiment fear indices, as independent variables. To establish the relationship between regional fertility rates and factors, the study employs four machine learning models: multiple linear regression, XGBoost, Random Forest, and Support Vector Regression. Support Vector Regression, XGBoost, and Random Forest significantly outperform linear regression, highlighting the importance of machine learning models in explaining non-linear relationships with numerous variables. A factor analysis using SHAP is then conducted. The unemployment rate, Regional Gross Domestic Product per Capita, Women's Participation in Economic Activities, Number of Crimes Committed, Average Age of First Marriage, and Private Education Expenses significantly impact regional fertility rates. However, the degree of impact of the factors affecting fertility may vary by region, suggesting the need for policies tailored to the characteristics of each region, not just an overall ranking of factors.

겨울왕국의 엘사 캐릭터에 나타난 젠더 정체성의 변화 -퀴어이론을 중심으로- (A Study on the Changes of Gender Identity Found in the Character of Elsa on Frozen -Focus on Queer Theory-)

  • 디즈니 애니메이션에서 여성 캐릭터가 등장하는 작품은 1937년 '백설공주와 일곱 난쟁이'로부터 시작된다. 그 후 2010년 '라푼젤'에 이르기까지 11명의 여성 캐릭터가 등장하였다. 여성 캐릭터들은 순종적, 가정적이고 왕자와의 결혼으로 인한 자신의 정체성을 들어내는 것에서 부터 시작하여 독립적, 개척적이고 때로는 나라를 구하고 남성을 이끄는 여전사의 캐릭터로 발전하기에 이르렀다. 하지만 여전히 디즈니 애니메이션의 결말은 제도적, 전통적 담론에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 남성 주인공을 만난 여성캐릭터는 키스와 결혼으로 결말 되거나 남성을 위한 희생의 미덕을 보여주는 것 이었다. 하지만 '겨울왕국'의 엘사는 지금까지의 디즈니에서 보여준 남성주의적, 가부장중심의 이성애적 이분법 담론의 캐릭터와는 구분되는 주체적 정체성을 가진 캐릭터이다. 본 고에서는 섹스와 젠더의 구분을 해체하고 젠더 개념을 수행적이며 유형화된 행동에 의해 구성된 것이고 남/녀, 이성애/동성애의 이분법적 자체를 해체한다는 개념인 퀴어이론을 통하여 엘사 케릭터의 젠더 정체성의 변화를 설명하고자 한다. 퀴어의 수행성은 레즈비언-게이 섹슈얼리티와 이성애 사이의 경계를 모호하게 만드는 것이며 이러한 패러디적 전략을 통해 지배담론에 대해 저항하는 정치성을 갖게 된다고 말할 수 있다. 엘사가 보여주는 수행성은 자매애와 이성애의 경계에 있음이다. 이성애적 관점에서 분석을 한다면 엘사의 정체성은 누이와의 친밀감이 단순히 자매의 사랑으로만 이해해야 한다. 반면, 여성들 간의 관계에 초점을 맞춘다면 엘사와 안나의 관계는 동성애의 관점으로 인식된다. 레즈비언 연속체의 개념으로 본다면 정체성의 제약을 가진 디즈니 여성 캐릭터의 동성애적 사랑은 여성들 간의 유대처럼 보이기 때문에 이성간의 사랑보다는 쉽게 성적 욕망이 은폐될 수 있다. 엘사는 퀴어적 정체성의 억제와 발현을 통하여 수행적 정체성으로 발전해나가고 있다. 그녀가 가지고 있는 마법은 초기의 금기시되고 두려움의 존재에서 레즈비언적 팔루스의 존재가 되고 이성애적 가부장 제도에서의 특권에 대항하는 의미화된 팔루스로 비추어지면서 아렌델의 세계관에서 인정받게 됨을 볼 수 있다. 엘사는 디즈니가 선보이는 새로운 여성 캐릭터이며 이 캐릭터를 퀴어이론으로 분석함으로써 다양한 캐릭터 분석 방법의 영역을 확장하고자 하였다.

강릉(江陵) 오죽헌(烏竹軒)의 조선시대 사회사(社會史)적 의미 (The social historic meaning of Gangneung-Ojukhen in Joseon Dynasty)

  • 보물 제165호인 오죽헌은 강원도 내에 남아있는 조선전기 가장 이른 시기 사대부 주택의 별당이다. 집의 형태적 측면은 건축사적으로 중요한 가치를 지닌다. 특히 신사임당이 율곡 이이를 낳은 집으로 유명하다. 강릉최씨 가문에 의해 처음 지어졌으나 자녀균분상속의 관행 속에서 사위에게 상속되었고, 최종적으로 신사임당의 어머니 용인이씨가 외손인 권처균에게 배묘조로 상속해 주었다. 권처균의 호가 '오죽헌'이었으므로 택호 또한 오죽헌이 된 것이다. 오죽헌은 조선시대의 상속과 봉사관행의 변화 양상을 조망해 볼 수 있는 문화유산이다. 오죽헌이 용인이씨, 신사임당, 그리고 이이, 권처균 등 직계가 아닌 외손들과 특별한 인연이 맺어지게 되는 것은 서류부가와 친정살이라고 하는 유습이 있었기 때문에 가능했다. 용인이씨, 신사임당은 친정인 오죽헌에서 태어나 자랐다. 용인이씨는 결혼 직후부터 사망할 때까지 친정인 오죽헌에서 살았다. 신사임당도 결혼 후 근친을 위해 친정을 자주 오가며 생활했고, 이이를 오죽헌에서 낳았다. 이이는 유년을 외조모 용인이씨 슬하에서 보냈고, 강릉을 떠나서도 어머니를 따라 외가를 자주 오갔으므로 외조모와의 정이 매우 각별하여 외조모의 봉사손이 된다. 권처균이 용인이씨 배묘손이 되는 것도 아버지 권화가 데릴사위로 들어갔기 때문이다. 오죽헌은 서류부가와 친정살이라고 하는 조선전기 혼인과 생활풍속을 엿볼 수 있는 집이다. 이이가 외가로 지칭했던 강릉 북평촌 최씨마을에는 권처균의 직계손인 안동권씨 추밀공파가 세거하는 동성마을이 형성되었다. 17세기부터는 부계친족집단을 중시하는 사회사적 변화가 일어난다. 오죽헌은 이러한 시점에 권처균에게 상속되었고, 최씨마을이었던 죽헌동에 안동권씨 집거지인 동성마을이 만들어지는 시발이 되었다. 오죽헌은 조선전기에서 후기로 변화되는 상속 친족 혼인제도 등과 같은 사회의 변화상을 한눈에 읽어낼 수 있는 중요한 문화유산이다.

공익연계마케팅과 명품브랜드태도 관계연구 - 한국의 체면중시문화를 중심으로 - (A Study on Relationship between Cause Related Marketing and Luxury Brand - On the Perspective of Financial Attitude -)

  • 삶의 수준이 높아지면서 명품의 대중화 성향이 강해지고 있다. 이에 따라 보편화된 고객관계를 위한 전략이 수반되어야 한다. 명품브랜드구매는 고객의 상징적 편익 추구와 관련되고 이러한 사회적 욕구에 우리나라 사람들이 보다 민감하게 반응할 수 있다. 이는 우리의 체면중시 문화와도 맞물려있다. 또한 공익과 소비의 관계도 고객들이 브랜드를 지속적으로 구매하고 호의적 이미지를 연상케 하는 중요한 대(對)고객 커뮤니케이션이다. 본 논문은 명품구매와 관련한 상징적 편익추구의 측면에서 공익과 연계하여 가치를 제고할 수 있고 여기에 한국인의 체면의식이 민감한 요인으로 작용할 수 있다고 판단하였다. 이러한 실질적, 심리적 고려를 통해 명품브랜드에 대한 고객과의 지속적 고객 관계를 형성할 수 있다. 본 연구는 한국인의 체면중시문화가 명품태도에 미치는 영향과 공익연계마케팅이 명품태도에 미치는 영향에 대해 실증하기로 한다.

성별에 따른 죽음에 대한 태도 비교 연구 - 남.녀노인들의 임종과 죽음에 대한 불안도 측정을 중심으로 - (Attitudes of male and female older adults concerning death)

  • The research is a comparative study of death attitudes between male and female elderly people. There is no doubt as to the inevitability of death. And yet, there is a vast conspiracy involved in the word of dead or death. The aged are considered to be nearer death than are people in other age groups. Kalish(1976) emphasized that for the aged two meanings of death have significance for evaluating their life ; first, that older people are known to have a limited life time and face death ; second that older people are known to have suffered many death-imposed losses that are often associated with the dying process. In considering these implications, the level of anxiety regarding death and dying is a crucial factor in determining mental health. In the study, 152 male elderly and 145 female elderly residing in Seoul, Korea was compared on the four dimensions of death anxiety and assigned personal variables. Therefore, the purpose the research was (1) to examine the characteristics of subjects on the independent variables(age, marital status, family relationship, social activities, religiousity etc.) ; (2) to examine the relationship between the independent variables and each dimension of death axniety ; (3) to determine the proportion of variance in the respective of death anxiety which is accounted for by the respective independent variables ; (4) to examine whether a significant difference between the respective independent variables and each dimension of death anxiety has ; (5) to determine the combination of variables which is the most successful in explaining the variance in death anxiety. Finding from this study support the following conclusions; 1. There was a significant differences between the male and female subjects in the level of death anxiety. In turn, the male older adults had lower death anxiety than did the female elderly. This implies that male tend to look forward to death rather than deny it. 2. As there was evidences from several studies, this research found that fear of death decreases as age increases. 3. The following two variables that correlate best with dying anxiety of others in both male and female older adults : 'marriage life', 'social interaction'. 4. The variables 'age' and 'children' for both female and male elderly accounted for the most variance in death anxiety of self. The findings of the study lend this investigator several suggestions, implications and recommendations for future research. There can be no death without life, and conversely, no life without death. Psychologists and health-related professionals may be learn as much about death as they can in order to develop more healthy attitudes and in order to be able to better aid and comfort dying people and their familities. Perhaps most importantly, professionals may be help those who are not faced with death at present to develop an understanding of it and healthy attitudes toward it. The programs of death education are needed for dedication to the evitability of death and the preparation of life for the older adults. More seminars, symposiums and research on death attitudes are needed. Finally, study for female older adults has been negelected topic in the areas of women's study and health education. Future study, for female elderly, have to deeply investigate where those problems come from and how to cope with in order to the female elderly segment can live the rest of their lives in satisfaction with well-being.

남성노인의 성생활인식도와 우울과의 관계연구 (A Correlational Study on Perceived Sex life and Depression in Old Men)

  • Purpose: Sexuality is important for the quality of life in old men, but this issue has been less explored due to social prejudice. Therefore, this study was carried out to describe a correlation between sex life and depression perceived by old men. Method: The subjects were 370 old men who were aged over 60 and lived in a city and three provinces. Instruments used in this study were Perception of Sex life Scale 01 items) and Depression Scale (20 items). The data was collected from December 2001 to February 2002 by written responses of the subjects to the questionnaire as well as one-to-one interview by research assistants for subjects. Statistical analysis for the data was done using SPSS and the level of significance was tested at 95% of confidence interval. Result: 1) Mean age of the subjects was $69.35{\pm}5.70$. A total of 253 subjects (68.6%) had spouse, and 191 of the subjects (52.3%) had sexual intercourse as frequently as 3 times per month. The average score for perception of sex life was $21.25{\pm}5.06$, out of the total score of 44, and that of depression was $35.08{\pm}9.29$ out of the total score of 80. 2) Perception of sex life was statistically significant by age, education, disease, medication, living arrangement, marital status, presence of girlfriend, pattern of inter-coitus, pocket money age of last coitus, subjective health state, and relationship (P<0.05). 3) Depression was statistically significant by age, education, disease. medication, living arrangement, marital status, satisfaction for marriage life, pattern of inter-coitus, feeling for change of sex life, pocket money, subjective health state, and relationship (P<0.05). 4) The correlation between perception of sex life and depression was negative, showing that depression tended to decrease as perception of sex life increases. Conclusion: It is concluded that depression in old men is closely related to their sex life. Positive sex life may have an important effect on the quality of life in old men.
