Transfer of Marketing Knowledge within Multinational Corporations and Its Impact on Performance: Moderating Effects of Absorptive Capacity, Socialization, and Local Knowledge

  • Knowledge1 is considered to be a key element of understanding how organizations gain and sustain competitive advantages. But very few firms are capable of creating the requisite knowledge and thus, firms should acquire and exploit new knowledge through knowledge transfer processes. The empirical part of this study involves examining relationships among adaptability of knowledge and knowledge transfer and marketing performance and testing the moderating roles of absorptive capacity, socialization and local marketing knowledge. This study is organized as follows: (1) Previous literature on knowledge, knowledge transfer and absorptive capacity is summarized, followed by the development of hypotheses derived from the knowledge-based view and absorptive capacity. (2) The hypotheses are tested with data collected from MNCs' subsidiaries performing marketing activities in Korea.Thestudyisclosedwithfindings,implications,andconclusions. Following six research hypotheses are drawn from literature review in related areas: H1: Adaptability of knowledge transferred from the MNCs' headquarters and other subsidiaries is positively associated with knowledge inflows into the receiving subsidiary. H2: The level of marketing knowledge transferred from the MNCs' headquarters and other subsidiaries is positively associated with marketing performance of the receiving subsidiary. H3: Increases in potential absorptive capacity will enhance the relationship between adaptability of knowledge and the level of marketing knowledge transfer. H4: Increases in realized absorptive capacity will enhance the relationship between the level of knowledge transfer and marketing performance of the receiving subsidiary. H5: Increases in socialization activity among the headquarters and subsidiaries will enhance the relationship between adaptability of knowledge and the level of marketing knowledge transfer. H6: Increases in the level of locally developed marketing knowledge will enhance the relationship between the level of knowledge transfer and marketing performance of the receiving subsidiary. The research framework that illustrates the proposed hypotheses is presented in figure 1. The unit of analysis for this study is knowledge transfer from the MNCs' headquarters and other subsidiaries to their subsidiaries operating in South Korea. The population for this study consists of subsidiaries established either as joint ventures or as wholly-owned subsidiaries. A group of 603 foreign firms were drawn from diverse industry organizations and business societies. After personal contact, telephone, fax, and e-mail to request that the respondents complete the questionnaire, 282 valid questionnaires from 133 initial sample companies were collected. The results of the empirical analyses significantly support all of the proposed hypotheses except hypothesis 3. Adaptability of external knowledge promotes knowledge transfer and the relationship is moderated by a firm's potential knowledge absorptive capacity. On the other hand, knowledge transfer improves a firm's marketing performance and a firm's realized knowledge absorptive capacity and local marketing knowledge moderate the relationship. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings in this study are as follows: (1) firms must take seeking, transferring, sharing and exploiting of external knowledge into serious consideration, while simultaneously creating knowledge to support the necessary business operations, remain competitive, and achieve superior performance. (2) Firms should continuously seek to develop their knowledge absorptive capacity (both potential and realized capacity) to absorb, learn and utilize valuable external knowledge. (3) Firms should emphasize not only absorptive capacity, but also development of local knowledge. Firms with strong absorptive capability and local knowledge can learn and transfer more external knowledge, which can be translated into greater levels of competence and performance.

국내 인터넷 비즈니스의 전략적 제휴의 특성 (A Study on the Strategic Alliance of Domestic Internet Businesses)

  • This study investigated the current status and characteristics of strategic alliances attempted by domestic internet businesses. Specifically, this study surveyed competitive environmental characteristics of partner companies involved, alliance period, types of partner companies, motives of alliances, types of alliances, success and failure factors and satisfaction toward the alliances. Major findings were: first, alliances between portal companies and content producers; portal companies and internet services; e-commercial sites and internet services were the most frequent partnerships engaged. Second, the most important motive for and type of the strategic alliance were: 'the commercialization and marketing of new product' and 'joint distribution and marketing agreement' respectively. Third, the most important factor for the successful alliance was 'a close examination of partners' core business value and competence'; and the factor most hindering the successful alliance was 'a discrepancy on capabilities of partners' core personnel. Finally types of internet business were significantly related to perceived satisfaction toward strategic alliance.

Impacts of E-Intermediary Use on Export Performance: A Resource Based View Perspective

  • The Internet has motivated firms to participate in electronic commerce. With the development of electronic commerce, SMEs (small- and medium-sized enterprises) may be forced to use e-intermediaries in export marketing. This study aims at assessing e-intermediaries in various aspects. Empirical and theoretical studies are conducted to investigate determinants and effects of eintermediary use in export marketing. Based on resource-based view (RBV), the study develops a conceptual model that can address the question of which international competence and export performance are closely related to e-intermediary use by SMEs. Based on literature review and theoretical foundations, this study made four hypotheses. With AMOS, structural equation modeling (SEM) was used for testing four hypotheses. The empirical findings support all hypotheses. Last, this study suggests examining comprehensive internal and external factors in terms of e-intermediary use as an interesting topic for future research.

신제품 개발조직의 지식역량 향상에 관한 연구

  • 지식사회, 지식경제의 등장과 더불어 기업의 자원으로서 지식(knowledge)의 중요성이 부각됨에 따라 마케팅 전략의 한 분야로서의 신제품 전략에서도 신제품 개발과정에 있어 기업(혹은 신제품 개발 팀)의 지식과 지식의 활용 능력을 어떻게 확장할 것인가가 중요한 전략적 이슈(issue)가 된다. 신제품 개발 과정에서는 필연적으로 불확실성-시장 불확실성과 기술 불확실성-이 존재하며 불확실성을 해소하기 위하여 정보와 지식의 중요성이 부각되고 기업내의 다양한 조직-특히 R&D, 생산, 마케팅-과의 지식공유·통합과정이 중요시된다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 첫째, 기업이 가지고 있는 지식을 제품으로 구체화하는 과정이 신제품 개발(New Product Development; NPD)과정이며 구체화 과정에서 개발의 효율성과 효과성을 어떻게 달성할 것인가에 관한 문제를 다루고자 한다. 둘째, 기존의 신제품 성과 요인으로 제시되고 있는 많은 요인들을 '지식역량(knowledge competence)'의 개념으로 정리하고 이러한 지식 역량과 신제품 경쟁우위 간의 인과적 관계를 살펴봄으로써 신제품 경쟁우위에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가에 대한 분석을 하고자 한다. 셋째 신제품 개발조직의 지식역량을 향상시키기 위한 전략적 방안을 제시하고자 한다. 이론적 배경으로 기업을 지식의 결집체로 인식하고 있는 지식거점관점(knowledge based perspective)과 이러한 지식자원의 활용에 초점을 맞춘 조직학습(organizational learning) 이론 그리고 심리학에서 다루고 있는 분산된 인지이론(distributed cognition theory)을 활용한다.

영업사원의 필요역량 도출을 위한 실증적 연구: B2B, B2C 영업사원을 구분하여 (An Empirical Study on Eliciting a Competency Required by Salespeople: Differentiating B2B Salespeople and B2C Salespeople)

  • Purpose - Our research started out with an assumption that a further study about the competency of B2B and B2C salespeople is needed, and has thus focused on enhancing their abilities throughout various fields. It seems that the ability of sales representatives has a positive influence on the image and revenue of the company. Since businesses find it apparent that the role of salespeople will become significant in the future, our research aims to provide a foundation for future research on exploring the necessary competencies for salespeople by conducting an in-depth interview as well as survey. Research design, data, and methodology - The methods of our research can be broken down into four steps - an interview on salespeople, eliciting salespeople's potential competency, surveys, and analysis. First, our research team conducted interviews on forty subjects. Second, we strived to elicit potential competency of salespeople based on data gained from previous studies and in-depth interviews. And Third, we came up with our own survey templates. Last but not least, our research team analyzed the results from the surveys to elicit necessary capabilities for the salespeople. Results - The results of our research show a clear distinction between B2B and B2C salespeople on all categories that we measured such as the character fitness, competence of emotion and sales marketing. As for B2B salespeople, the results indicated openness(M: 3.8265) in character fitness, and self-motivation(M: 4.1887), group cognition(M: 3.8735), teamwork(M: 3.9956) in competence of emotion, and previous research(M: 3.8735), proposal of values(M: 4.3873), cooperation with other team(M: 4.0441) in competence of sales marketing. The difference in capability required between B2B salespeople and B2C salespeople was very pronounced. Conclusions - For future studies, enhanced pool of subjects with various backgrounds is needed in order for our research to reach a wide range of population. The results from our research are advised to be used for eliciting the competency required by salespeople and for a practical application to further enhance their competency. Companies need continuous efforts to develop the skills of salespeople based on competence analysis and research of sales representatives.

생명공학 혁신의 시장확산 -Venture 기업을 중심으로- (Diffusion of Innovations for Bio-technology Ventures)

  • 본 연구는 인간 유전자를 해독하려는 경주가 어떻게 전개되어왔는가에서 시작하여 생명공학 혁신들이 나타나고 시장 창출이 이루어지고 있는 분야들이 어떠한 것이 있는가에 대한 연구를 하였다. 의학/의약 분야, 농업/식품 분야, 화학/공정 분야, 환경분야, bioelectronics 분야 등에서 혁신 창출이 이루어지고 거대한 시장이 창출되어가고 있음을 탐색하였다. 그리고 나타나는 생명공학 혁신의 시장확산의 성공에 관한 연구 분야를 경쟁력에 관한 이론, 혁신의 소비자 수용과 확산에 관한 문헌들을 중심으로 하여 제시하였다. 클러스터를 잘 형성할 수록, 제휴를 통한 보완관계를 잘 형성할수록 혁신 창출과 확산에서 성공가능성이 높을 것 이다. 그리고 생명공학 분야는 기술과 시장의 양 측에서 벤처 창업에서 시간이 경과함에 따라 기술에서 시장으로 무게 중심이 점차적으로 옮겨갈 것이라고 제기하였다 생명공학과 같은 첨단기술 분야에서 혁신 확산이 제대로 이루어지려면 핵심역량을 창출하는 과정에서 기업가의 전략적 의도를 제대로 형성하는 것이 중요한 것이라는 것을 제기하였다. 생명공학 분야에서 나타나는 혁신의 소비자 수용과정에서 저항이 예상되며, 이는 기존의 습관과 지각된 위험이라는 변수에서 지각된 위험이라는 변수가 더 강하게 작용할 것이라고 제기하였다. 생명공학 분야에서 혁신의 소비자 수용과 확산에 관한 조사에서는 양적 조사보다 질적 조사가 중요하며 이는 앞으로 창출되어야하는 시장조사이기 때문이다. 생명공학에서의 혁신에 대한 소비자 수용과 확산은 소비자들이 형성하고 있는 사회네트워크의 성격이 영향을 미친다. 소비자들이 약한 연결로 많은 네트워크를 가지고 있는 소비자집단 사이로 혁신이 전달 될수록 확산이 빠르게 나타난다. 글로벌 혁신확산 영역에서는 생명공학과 같은 첨단기술 분야에서는 문화적인 영향을 적게 받을 것이라는 명제를 제기하였다. 이러한 이론적 연구가 앞으로 실증적 연구로 나타나 보다 일반화된 이론으로 발전하는 것은 미래의 연구로 돌린다.

  • 글로벌 기술협력은 파트너 간 이해관계 불일치와 기술수준, 문화, 언어 및 각종 거시적 환경여건의 차이로 국내 기업 간 협력보다 훨씬 더 어려운 것이 사실이다. 본 연구는 국제 기술협력에서 제기되는 여러 어려움을 극복하고 성공적인 성과를 도출한 한국전자통신연구원(이하 ETRI)과 Microsoft사의 글로벌 기술협력 사례를 조사 분석하였다. 이를 위해 자원기반이론, 네트워크 이론, 관계마케팅 이론 등의 기술협력 이론을 검토하였다. 아울러 시장지배력 관점에서 두 기관의 협력 동기를 살펴보았다. 양 기관 간 기술협력 심층조사 과정에서 도출된 주요 성공요인들로서 명확한 협력목적, 신뢰에 기반한 소통, 파트너가 의존할 수 있는 핵심역량, 사회문화적 요소 등 환경요인이 도출되었다.

한류연예인에 대한 브랜드애착의 선행 및 후행변수들에 대한 연구 (Investigating Antecedents and Consequents of Brand Attachments to Celebrities in Korean Wave)

  • 본 연구는 휴먼 브랜드로서 한류연예인에 대한 애착을 형성하는 요인 및 그 애착이 가져오는 결과에 대해 심도 있게 분석함으로써 휴먼브랜드에 대한 연구에 대한 심층적 연구의 필요성을 제기하는 동시에 한류의 효과 및 앞으로 마케팅 전략에 대한 시사점을 제시하는 목적을 가지고 있다. 특히, 사람 대 사람의 관계에서는 충성도보다 애착(attachments)이라는 표현이 적합하다고 판단되어 많은 마케팅 연구자들이 해당 브랜드의 마케팅 성과를 평가하는데 중요한 변수로 활용하고 있다. 본 연구의 결과는 한류연예인의 능력보다는 자아일치성과 신뢰가 더욱 브랜드 애착에 영향을 미치는 중요한 요인임으로 나타났다. 이는 소비자의 감성적인 부분이 연예인 평가에서 더 크게 작용해서 그런 것이 아닌지 유추해 볼 수 있다. 특히, 자아일치성의 개념은 아무래도 이성적 보다는 감성적 측면에서 해당소비자에 대한 평가를 나타내는 측면이라도 볼 수 있기 때문에 대체로 연예인에 대한 평가에서는 감정적 측면의 평가가 더욱 크게 기여할 수 있음을 유추해볼 수 있는 것이다. 둘째, 한류연예인의 확장제품으로 가치에 대한 영향 및 국가 이미지 개선효과를 검증한 결과, 해당 과거 일반 브랜드에서 수행된 연구들과 마찬가지로 광고모델이 좋으면 광고되는 제품에 긍정적 영향을 미치고, 해당브랜드의 차기 후속모델에 대한 관심을 높이며, 새로운 분야로의 브랜드 확장을 용이하게 하였으며 국가이미지에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다는 것을 확인하였다.

The Assessment Method for the Strategic Potential of Personnel with the Example of JTI Kazakhstan

  • Purpose - The purpose of this article is to review the key features and benefits with different methods which is suitable for a particular organization (in this article JTI Kazakhstan) as well as for assessing the capacity of a staff and identification. Research design, data and methodology - Current approaches were used to assess a staff capacity and classify groups. By comparing each other and marked different application methods, this article developed the method for the employment of personal potential and control management process. Results - Through this analysis, assessing labor capacity functioned as an evaluation and assessment for employee competence. Examples suggested practical recommendations for assessing employees' labor potential. Conclusions - It is important not just to bring together several techniques but adapt the conditions with existing organization with the professionalism and experience of specialists in managing the evaluation process. In terms of the implementation of this task, it is necessary to have knowledge in the field of psychology as well as business processes, objectives, and specificities of companies including the relevant personal qualities.

소상공인의 자기결정성 특성이 창업의지에 미치는 영향 (Impact of Self-Determination Characteristic of Small Business Start-Up on Entrepreneurial Intention)

  • Micro small business start-ups are receiving financial and marketing support from government or public authority, but business closure rate is very high and it causes a hugh burden to households and national economy. This study aims to verify the causal relationship between the self-determination characteristic of small business start-ups and entrepreneurial intention through learning orientation and innovation ability. The man's intrinsic motivation of self-determination theory is expected to have an impact on the entrepreneurial intention of small business start-ups. The self-determination theory includes perceived autonomy, perceived competence, perceived relationship as independent variables. This study presented a research model for explaining the entrepreneurial intention of small business start-ups, and collected 260 survey responses from the small business start-ups In order to validate the proposed research model, PLS analysis is performed with valid 246 questionnaires. By PLS technique, the measurement reliability and validity of research variables are tested and the path analysis is conducted to do the hypothesis test. Path analysis shows that perceived autonomy does not significantly affect the learning orientation and innovation ability. On the other hand, perceived competence significantly influences learning orientation and innovation ability. Perceived relationships had significant influence on learning orientation. It is found that the parameters of learning orientation and innovation ability significantly influence the dependent variable of entrepreneurial intention. Based on the results, a policy and strategy for supporting small business start-up are presented.
