K-factor Prediction in Import and Export Cargo Trucks-Concentrated Expressways by Short-Term VDS Data (단기 VDS자료로 수출입화물트럭이 집중하는 고속도로의 K-factor 추정에 관한 연구)

  • Gyeongbu and Namhae expressways in the country, are the major arterial highways which are connected with the Busan port in the north-south and east-west directions, respectively, and required to study the traffic characteristics about the hourly volume factors(K-factor) by concentrated midium-size and large-size cargo trucks of 20% or higher in expressways. We therefore attempted to predict the K-factor in expressways through the correlation analysis between K-factor and K-factor estimates on the basis of the short-term VDS data collected at the basic segments of the above major expressways. As a result, power model appeared to be appropriate in predicting K-factor by the K-factor estimate based on VDS data for 7 days with a high explanatory power and validity.

Construction of experimental data to calculate the arrival time of the rescue ship (구조선의 도착시간 산출을 위한 실험 데이터 구축)

  • The arrival time of rescue ships is very important in the event of distress. This paper presents the development of experimental data to calculate the arrival time of rescue ships. The ship's traffic probability distribution was used. Mokpo Port was selected as the area of study, and AIS data for a 1 year period were used. For the ship's traffic probability distribution, a gateline was established. The lateral range distribution was calculated and fitted to the normal distribution and two Gaussian mixture distributions (GMD2), and each parameter was extracted. After the locations of ${\mu}$, ${\mu}{\pm}1{\sigma}$ of the normal distribution and ${\mu}_1$ of the two Gaussian mixture distribution(GMD2) were set as waypoints, the location and probability were determined. A scenario was established in relation to each type of parameter. Thus, the arrival time can be calculated.

  • Since the routes within VTS areas include harbour limit of major ports, there are sections where the traffic volume increases and the routes are normally narrow according to the geographical conditions. In the case of ports and VTS areas located on the west coast of Korea, it is affected by strong current due to large tidal differences. In this paper, we propose a method to produce useful information according to the change of navigation environment by analyzing the characteristics of ship's movement according to tidal stream or current. The SVR seaway model, support vector regression, and grid search were conducted in order to extract models.

A Study on the Degree of Collision Risk with Relative Bearing at CPA (최근접점 상대방위에 따른 선박충돌위험알고리즘 개발에 관한 연구)

  • When VTSOs(Vessel Traffic Service Operators) determine the degree of collision risk of two vessels, they consider comprehensively information about each vessel's course, speed, DCPA, TCPA and encountering situation. In this study, we proposed an algorithm in which two relative bearings as information about two vessel's encountering situation are used to evaluate the degree of collision risk. In order to verify whether the proposed algorithm is reasonable, we set twenty encountering situations and conducted a survey of collision risk on fifty three VTSOs about those situations. By comparing the degrees of collision risk with the proposed algorithm to the results of the survey, we found that relative bearing at CPA is very important factor for VTSO to recognize the level of collision risk when two vessels are in encountering situation.

  • As the number of passenger ship users increases each year, the importance of traffic safety for passenger ship routes is becoming more prominent. A passenger ship is a multi-use vessel frequented by numerous individuals, and special attention to safety is imperative. To prevent and mitigate large-scale damage, preparedness for marine traffic accidents is crucial. Although significant efforts are being made to reduce accidents caused by floating objects in the ocean, such incidents have not significantly decreased. This study presents the results of a theoretical review on the technology for identifying floating objects using hyperspectral cameras. The effectiveness and usability of drone technology were also assessed. Additionally, the functionalities of polarization filters and hyperspectral cameras were evaluated. The study concluded that hyperspectral imaging technology is applicable for identifying floating objects and that future research should measure the degree of light reflection at sea level and further explore the inherent light wavelength emissions from these objects.

Study on the Risk Assessment of Collision Accidents Between Island Bridge and Ship Using an Image Processing Method (영상처리기법을 활용한 연도교와 선박간의 충돌사고 위험성 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Tourism projects through islands in the waters of Sinan-gun became active, and as a result, a total of 13 marine bridges connecting islands were completed. However, the marine bridge constructed in the fairway is dangerous for traffic. Particularly, in the case of the marine bridge connecting two islands, the width of the fairway is extremely narrow, therefore the risk is higher. In this study, we evaluated the risk of collision between marine bridge piers and ships using the IALA Waterway Risk Assessment Program (IWRAP), a risk assessment model for port waterways, based on a maritime traffic survey on the coastal bridge in Sinan-gun. The results, indicated that No.1 Sinan bridge had the highest probability of collision and most of the transit ships were coastal passenger ships. In addition, No.1 Sinan bridge was the place where the most collision accidents occurred among the marine bridge piers in the target sea, and the cause this study was analyzed. An analysis of the satellite images of the sea environment of No.1 Sinan bridge using an image processing method, confirmed that obstacles that could not be seen in the chart existed nearby the bridge. As a result, traffic was observed to be concentrated in one direction, unlike two-way traffic, which is a method of inducing traffic of bridges to avoid obstacles. The risk cause analysis method using the image processing technique of this study is expected to be used as a basic research method for analyzing the risk factors of island bridge in the future.

A Study on the Standard Ship's Length of Domestic Trade Port (국내 무역항의 표준 선박길이에 관한 연구)

  • With the introduction of increasingly large-sized ships, the conditions of main domestic port facilities remain the same as in the past. So, there is high probability that marine traffic congestion can occur at the certain ship's routes. The standard ship's length used to assess the marine traffic congestion of domestic trade port is 70 meters. It has been in use for the last 30 years, so, its usefulness is highly recommended for review. This study deeply analyzes the tendency of ship's dimensional changes according to recent enlargement of ship's size by utilizing the particulars of 60,000 ships saved in domestic Port-MIS database and suggests the standard ship's length by figuring out the correlation between length of ship and gross tonnage. In addition, the basis of statistical data on the ship's tonnage in domestic trade over the last five years suggests the standard ship's length by deriving the reference point of cumulative incidences that occupy more than over 50 %, except for small vessels. It is necessary to consider the characteristic of each domestic trade port before the actual application of suggested standard ship's length.

A Study on Application of ARIMA and Neural Networks for Time Series Forecasting of Port Traffic (항만물동량 예측력 제고를 위한 ARIMA 및 인공신경망모형들의 비교 연구)

  • The accuracy of forecasting is remarkably important to reduce total cost or to increase customer services, so it has been studied by many researchers. In this paper, the artificial neural network (ANN), one of the most popular nonlinear forecasting methods, is compared with autoregressive integrated moving average(ARIMA) model through performing a prediction of container traffic. It uses a hybrid methodology that combines both the linear ARIAM and the nonlinear ANN model to improve forecasting performance. Also, it compares the methodology with other models in performance for prediction. In designing network structure, this work specially applies the genetic algorithm which is known as the effectively optimal algorithm in the huge and complex sample space. It includes the time delayed neural network (TDNN) as well as multi-layer perceptron (MLP) which is the most popular neural network model. Experimental results indicate that both ANN and Hybrid models outperform ARIMA model.

A Study of Multi-channel AFS for Marine Traffic Facilities (해양교통시설물용 다채널 AFS에 관한 연구)

  • After some period of time, the marine traffic facilities find problems caused by shellfish adhered to inside and inlet of the water column. Therefore, single-channel AFS(Anti-Fouling System) has been applied in order to minimize the deposition of shellfish. However, imbalance phenomenon of ionization of copper electrodes that are used for single-channel AFS appeared. This problem resulted in frequent replacement of anode. In this paper, multi-channel current control system has been developed, as well as the related hardware has been designed and fabricated. Further, experimental study has been undertaken to compare the application of single and multi- channel AFS. Through the sea experiments, it was possible to confirm that the copper electrode used for multi-channel AFS is uniformly ionized.

The Development of a Collision Warning System for Small-Sized Vessels Using WAVE Communication Technology (WAVE 통신을 이용한 소형선박 충돌경보시스템 개발 연구)

  • Wireless communication technology (WAVE) for vehicles, which is the core technology behind the next-generation intelligent transport system (C-ITS), is used to deliver information about vehicles to prevent traffic accidents and traffic situations that may arise between vehicles and infrastructure. Similar traffic issues often arise in marine scenarios. Currently, AIS is being used as a means of transmitting information such as the status of relative vessels, but research is being carried out to solve problems with AIS such as overloading by applying wireless communication technology for vehicles to the sea. In this study, a collision warning system suitable for small-sized vessels was developed based on the marine application of WAVE for vehicles verified through prior research, and the adequacy of this collision warning system was reviewed through a practical test. It is expected that this system will contribute greatly to future e-Navigation applications or self-driving ships as well as to preventing marine accidents.
