International oil prices are expected to increase from $85 a barrel this year to up to $100 a barrel in the second half of the year; this is likely to increase orders for offshore plants in the global market. One main characteristic of offshore plants is that a large helideck is located on the top side, and aluminum alloys are used as the basic material of the structure for weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Shipowners are increasing the size of helicopters to quickly evacuate lives in the event of an emergency, and the safety use load of devices that can stably secure helicopters to the deck is also required to increase. Owing to the nature of the aluminum material, the structural strength caused by welding is greatly reduced; therefore, the fixing device must be designed by embedding it in the deck and fixing it with bolts. In this study, a model applying aluminum alloy 6082-T6 was developed to develop a helicopter fastening device that can be used for large helidecks (diameter = 28 m). The developed item was verified through nonlinear structural strength calculation to satisfy the load used for the actual fastening condition. The load condition with a 45° showed a lower ultimate strength than the 90° case owing to local plastic collapse. The nonlinear structural collapse behavior showed a result similar to that of the experimental test. The main contents derived from this study are considered to be reference materials when evaluating the structural strength of similar aluminum equipment.

Recently, development of maritime autonomoust surface ships and eco-friendly ships, production and evaluation research considering various marine environments is needed in the field of optimal routes as the demand for accurate and detailed real-time marine environment prediction information expands. An algorithm that can calculate the optimal route while reducing the risk of the marine environment and uncertainty in energy consumption in smart ships was developed in 2 stages. In the first stage, a profile was created by combining marine environmental information with ship location and status information within the Automatic Ship Identification System(AIS). In the second stage, a model was developed that could define the marine environment energy map using the configured profile results, A regression equation was generated by applying Random Forest among machine learning techniques to reflect about 600,000 data. The Random Forest coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.89, showing very high reliability. The Dijikstra shortest path algorithm was applied to the marine environment prediction at June 1 to 3, 2021, and to calculate the optimal safety route and express it on the map. The route calculated by the random forest regression model was streamlined, and the route was derived considering the state of the marine environment prediction information. The concept of route calculation based on real-time marine environment prediction information in this study is expected to be able to calculate a realistic and safe route that reflects the movement tendency of ships, and to be expanded to a range of economic, safety, and eco-friendliness evaluation models in the future.

Ship capsize accidents are common in coastal waters, particularly involving small fishing boats. To prevent there overturing accidents in small fishing boats, their stabilities must be assessed at the initial design step. However, the available information during the initial design step is limited, posing challenges in performing a reliable stability evaluation. Therefore, this study presents a plan to estimate the transverse metacenter (GM) of small fishing boats using parameters such as KM, KG, and TRIM that can be determined at the initial design step. Stability was evaluated by comparing GM with the minimum transverse metacenter (GMmin) specified in the standard safety evaluation criteria for fishing boats. To calculate the required trim value for hydrostatic characteristics using K-SHIP, a stability assessment program provided by the Korea Maritime Safety and Transportation Corporation, the initial trim state is estimated based on the ship lines using the commercial CFD program STAR-CCM+. GM is then calculated by assessing the hydrostatic characteristics in relation to the boat lines using K-SHIP. Furthermore, the stability of the fully loaded state is compared by subtrcating GM from GMmin. One constructed ship is designated as the standard ship, and the stability assessment method proposed in this study is applied to evaluate stability and validate its effectiveness. Consequently, the representative line of a 4.99-ton fishing boat and nine modular lines models derived from it were evaluated, ultimately identifying a relatively superior stability.

For safe mooring and towing between the ship and port, the equipment must be designed in accordance with the relevant international regulations. However, some small shipyards and engineering companies often do not fully comprehend the core contents. Therefore, the international regulations regarding towing and mooring equipment are reviewed and the bollard and chock are newly developed based on the Mooring Equipment Guideline 4 (MEG4) standards. A bollard is a mooring equipment used to fix a mooring rope to the hull. It has two columns and is mostly used in a figure eight pattern knots under the mooring condition. The chock, which is used to change the mooring rope direction coming into the ship from outside, is manufactured using a casting with curvature. The two mooring equipment are widely used in the stern, bow, and mid-side. Owing to the increase in the size of container vessels and LNG ships, the mooring rope load has increased and the safe working load of the mooring equipment must be revised. This study summarizes and examines the results of the allowable stress method obtained using finite element analysis modelling. To consider the mesh size effect, a reasonable criteria was suggested by referring the existing class guidance. Additionally, the safe working load was verified through nonlinear collapse analysis, and the elastic region against load increments was confirmed. Furthermore, the proposed evaluation method can be used to develop similar equipment in the near future.

A study using numerical analysis techniques was conducted to examine the scour effect of pier-type dolphin structures installed in the domestic marine environment, and the effect of scour on horizontal bearing capacity was examined. In this study, we designed the berthing structures, taking into account the environmental and ground conditions of the target maritime area, and after calculating the predicted scour area, stability evaluation was performed by removing the ground elements of the area. The increase in scour depth was found to induce a direct decrease in horizontal bearing capacity due to soil loss in contact with the foundation, establishing a relationship that increases horizontal displacement. However, in the foundation designed to withstand the design load by reflecting the safety rate, the increase in horizontal displacement formed by possible scour is not large, which did not have a dominant effect on the horizontal bearing capacity of the foundation. In the future, research is required to analyze the impact of each factor and formalize evaluation and design techniques to evaluate the scour safety of marine foundations and pier-type structures installed in various ground conditions and structural formats.

In systems like the combat management system of a naval ship or smart city of civilians, where many sensors and actuators are connected, the middle-ware DDS (Data Distribution Service) is mainly used to transmit large amounts of data. It is scalable and can effectively respond to the increase in sensors or equipment connected to the system in the future. The engineering control system (ECS), which plays an important role similar to the combat management system of a naval ship, still uses Server-Client model with industrial protocols such as Modbus and CAN (Controller Area Network) bus, to transmit data, which is unfavorable in terms of scalability. However, as automation and unmanned systems advance, more sensors and actuators are expected to be added, necessitating substantial program modification. DDS can effectively address such situations. The purpose of this study is to confirm the development possibility of an integrated monitoring and control system of a ship by using OpenDDS, which follows the OMG (Object Management Group) standard among the middle-ware DDS used in the combat management system. To achieve this goal, field equipment simulators and an ECS server were configured to perform field equipment data input/output and simulation using DDS was performed. The ECS prototype successfully handled data transmission, confirming that DDS is capable of serving as the middle-ware for the ECS of a ship.

Previous studies on zooplankton in Asan Bay were mostly based on samples collected seasonally with three months intervals. Present study was aimed to know the temporal variation of meso-zooplankton distribution using the data collected monthly. Relationships between zooplankton abundances and environmental factors such as seawater temperatures, salinities and chlorophyll-a contents were also studied. Seawater temperature showed typical pattern of seasonal variation found in temperate waters. The fluctuations of environmental factors ranged relatively wider In the inner part of the bay than those in outer part of the bay. Salinity was very low right after the summer rainy period due to the sporadic outflow of freshwater from the adjacent artificial lakes. Sudden changes in salinity seemed to have significant impact on zooplankton assemblages. Chlorophyll-a contents were increased in general when compared with previous reports probably due to the recent human exploitations in the coastal zone, which might enhance the nutrients level . The timing and duration of spring bloom showed geographical differences. In the inner part of the bay it began earlier (February) and last longer (three months) while in the outer part of the bay it began late (April) and last just one month. Zooplankton abundance, especially most abundant taxon Acartia hongi, showed weak but significant positive correlation with chlorophyll-a contents. The difference in temporal variation found with two different sampling intervals indicated the necessity of shorter time interval samplings.

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has been recognized as a provider for freshwater, nutrients, and dissolved constituents from continents to the oceans and paid more attention with regard to the mass balance of water or dissolved constituents on local and global scales. The submarine discharge of fresh groundwater (fresh SGD) through seepage or springs in coastal ocean may be especially important in aspects of water resource and marine environment managements in the future. Based on the worldwide compilations of observed fresh SGD, our review reveals that fresh SGD occurs in various marine environments along most shoreline of the world and the global estimates of fresh SGD were approximately 0.01-17% of surface runoff. In addition, the input of fresh SGD calculated and investigated in this study were about 50%, 57%, 89%, and 420% of total river discharge in Jeju Island, Yeongil Bay, Masan Bay, and Yeoja Bay, respectively. These inputs from fresh SGD along the shoreline of Korea Peninsula are much higher than those of the whole world, greatly vary with the region. However, since these estimates are based on the water balance method mainly used in coastal ocean, we have to perform continuous monitoring of various parameters, such as precipitation, tide, evapotanspiration and water residence time, which have an impact on the water balance in a lot of areas for evaluating the precise input of fresh SGD. In addition, since the method estimating the input of fresh SGD has brought up many problems, it is required to make an intercomparison between various methods such as hydrogeological assumption, numerical modeling, and seepage meter.

Phytoplankton community structure is one of the indicators that can explain the enviromnental characteristics of coastal waters. In this study, phytoplankton community structure and water quality of aquaculture area were investigated for understanding regional enviromnental characteristics. Thirty stations in aquaculture areas of Tongyeong, southeast coast of Korea, were investigated monthly from January to December, 2009. Phytoplankton community, meteorologic dada and enviromnent factors including temperature, salinity, transparency, nutrients and chlorophyll a were also examined. Chaetoceros spp. and unidentified small flagellates were dominant species in all the year round. Pseudo-nitzschia spp., Dictyocha spp., and Nitzschia longissima were dominant in June to October being summer season, and Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira spp., Eucamphia zodiacus, Akashiwo sanguinea, Gymnodinium spp. and Asterionella japonicus appeared as dominant species in the rest of months. Dinoflagellate blooms occurred 3 times in near Hansan Bay and around Saryang-do, and the highest chlorophyll a was found in Hansan Bay. Species diversity of phytoplankton was lower in Hansan and Womnum Bay, and diatom was more abundant than dinoflagellates in Mireuk-do waters. These results showed that phytoplankton community varied by the seasonal and geographical characteristics, and recent increase of water temperature and heavy rain may affect on phytoplankton community structure.

Characteristics in distributions of T, S, nutrients, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations and meso-zooplankton abundances and the relations among these parameters were investigated with the data collected in Asan Bay around the rainy season from May 24 till August 25, 2006 at about 10 days interval. Freshwater input during the rainy season clearly affected the distributions of zooplankton and phytoplankton (chlorophyll ${\alpha}$). Freshwater discharge resulted in high nutrients decreased zooplankton abundances. On the contrary, chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations increased at the end of the rainy season. It seemed that the increase of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations was the result of the decreased zooplankton and enriched nutrients caused by freshwater discharges. Seawater temperatures were certainly the reason for the zooplankton succession. However, overall abundance of zooplankton and abundances of some zooplankton such as Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia pacifica, and Sagitta crassa seemed to be influenced by lowered salinity caused by heavy rain rather than seawater temperatures.
