  • The activity concentrations of $^{210}Po$ and $^{210}Pb$ within phytoplankton-zooplankton-anchovy-mackerel in the coastal water of the Jeju Island were determined to understand their distribution and bio-accumulation along the trophic level. In the surface water, the total activity concentrations of $^{210}Po$ and $^{210}Pb$ were $0.83{\pm}0.004mBq\;kg^{-1}$ and $1.27{\pm}0.03mBq\;kg^{-1}$. And the dissolved activity concentration of $^{210}Po$ and $^{210}Pb$ were $0.75{\pm}0.06mBq\;kg^{-1}$ and $1.22{\pm}0.09mBq\;kg^{-1}$ respectively. In the phytoplankton, the concentration factor (CF) of $^{210}Po$ and $^{210}Pb$ were $1.5{\times}10^5$ and $2.6{\times}10^4$ shows $^{210}Po$ is 5 times higher compared to $^{210}Pb$. The similar CF factor in the zooplankton of $^{210}Po$ was derived as $1.4{\times}10^5$. The CF of $^{210}Po$ in anchovy was increased twice compared to that in plankton. This is the evidence that there is $^{210}Po$ bio-magnification in the trophic level of plankton-anchovy. However the $^{210}Po$ activity concentration in the muscle tissue of mackerel was one-hundred times lower than that in anchovy. This reflects that in the trophic level of anchovy-mackerel, the bio-accumulation of $^{210}Po$ is decreased. The activity concentrations of $^{210}Po$ in the internal organs of anchovy and mackerel were 8 to 38 times higher than those in muscle tissues. In phytoplankton-zooplankton-anchovy, the CF of $^{210}Pb$ was decreased five times along the trophic level in order. In anchovy-mackerel it was decreased by 30-70%.

  • Hydroacoustic and open-closing zooplankton net survey were conducted to understand the characteristics of the sound scattering layer (SSL) and to estimate the density of an euphausiid (Euphausia pacifica) in the SSL, in the northwestern part of the East China Sea. The survey was carried out during July 6-9 2002 at 8 sampling stations for zooplankton. The virtual echogram technique was used to identify E. pacifica from all acoustic scatters. Mean volume backscattering strength difference $(MVBS_{120kHz-38kHz})$ and target strength equation for E. pacifica were derived from the Distorted-wave Born Approximation (DWBA) model. Although vertical migration of the SSL is similar to the general pattern, dispersion at night shows some differences. Estimated mean density using acoustic data ranged from $20.4-221.4\;mg/m^3$ over the whole depth, and $87.1-553.5\;mg/m^3$ in the SSL. The density using the zooplankton net ranged from $0.2-362.4\;mg/m^3$ and was not related to net deploying method. The results from the acoustic and net survey suggest that E. pacifica might be an important zooplankton community in the northwestern part of the East China Sea.

  • Zooplankton community in the major ports of Korea, which were characterized by a specific marine environmental condition during summer, was studied. Water temperature in the ports of western areas was higher and while those in the East Sea was lower. Contradictorily, the salinity was lowest in the western areas, while being highest in the eastern area. The Chl-a concentration was highest in the southern areas and lowest in the eastern one. Zooplankton taxa were most diverse in the western areas and simplest in the eastern one. Copepods predominantly occurred in the western areas, but their abundance relatively decreased in the southern and eastern areas. Cluster analysis revealed that copepod communities were classified into 3 summit groups, the western, southern and eastern areas. The results indicate that zooplankton communities in Korean ports may be affected by biological factors like Chl-a concentration in addition to environmental factor such as temperature and salinity.

  • Monthly variations of cirriped larvae near Oryuk islets off Busan were investigated at four stations from January 2012 to January 2013. Zooplankton was vertically collected, using NORPAC net (mouth 45 cm, mesh $200{\mu}m$), from the surface to 1 m above the bottom. 12 species belong to five genera of 4 families were identified including one unidentified species. Cirriped larvae occupied small portion of total zooplankton, ranging 0.02 to 4.1% of total zooplankton densities. The densities varied monthly from $1inds.m^{-3}$ to $715.1inds.m^{-3}$, which was highest in September and lowest in February. Chthamalus challengeri, Balanus glanula, B. improbisus, B. nubilus and Octomeris sulcata were dominant species and accounted for 70.1% of total cirriped larvae. Larval densities of cirripeds between stations were not significantly different (F=0.237, p=0.870). The larval communities were grouped into two groups by cluster analysis. We discussed the distribution patterns of cirriped larvae in relation to oceanographic characteristics in the study area.

  • The seasonal variations in the zooplankton community of the southern coastal waters of Korea were investigated seasonally in May, August, November 2005, and February 2006. A total of 74 taxa were sampled, with an average abundance ranging from 2,426~23,793 indiv./$m^3$, among which Noctiluca scintillans predominated. Noctiluca scintillans, Acartia omorii, Acartia erythraea, Paracalanus parvus s. l., Centropages abdominalis, Tortanus forcipatus, and Pseudevadne tergestina were the most abundant species detected. Zooplankton diversity was high around the inner regions during the summer, but it was relatively low in the stations located in the outer regions in the autumn. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) revealed significant differences in the structures of the zooplankton community among the three regions. Our results showed that the seasonal variations in zooplankton communities in the southern coastal waters of Korea were attributable to seasonal changes in temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a concentrations, and N. scintillans blooms; additionally, this particularly study area might have been specifically influenced by the appearance of the Tsushima Warm Current.

  • Zooplankton community structure and copepod production in Seomjin River estuary were investigated at 10 stations along the salinity gradients from May 2009 to February 2010. Total zooplankton taxa were identified to be 31 in the study area and seasonal average abundance of zooplankton was $4,151\;ind.{\cdot}m^{-3}$ during the study period. Zooplankton community was mainly composed of coastal species in dry season. However, brackish species dominated in upper or middle part of this estuary in flood season. This study showed that the growth rates of Acartia spp. and Paracalanus parvus s.l. measured from field experiments were regulated by the variations of Hater temperature and salinity; The annual copepod production estimated by dominant copepod species was $3.49\;g\;C{\cdot}m^{-2}yr^{-1}$, and the relatively high production value could be explained by the high phytoplankton standing stocks and the mass occurrence of coastal and brackish species with relation to various salinity gradients in Seomjin River estuary.

  • Data on squid catches by the Korean jig fishery in sea blocks ($30'{\times}30'$), water temperatures at depth(30m, 50m and 100m) and zooplankton biomass in the East Sea from 1980 to 1999 were analyzed to examine the mechanism of formation of the high density stock area. Japanese common squid (Todarodes pacificus) catch in the East Sea was low in 1980s, while the catch was high in 1990s. The five sea blocks (No. 76, 82, 83, 87, 88) of the southern part in the eastern coastal waters of Korea showed high levels of percentage of total catch (35.1%), whereas the four sea blocks (No. 65, 71, 72, 78) of the coastal waters of Uleung Island showed high levels of percentage of CPUE (61.2%) for 20 years. Squid catches showed monthly fluctuations according to the vertical distribution of optimum water temperature for fishing ($14^{\circ}C{\sim}19^{\circ}C$). High total catch and high CPUE area matched well with $10^{\circ}C$ isothermal lines at 100m depth indicating northern limiting of Tsushima Warm Current, and temporal and spatial change in $10^{\circ}C$ isothermal line caused the change in total catch and CPUE. Horizontal distribution of zooplankton biomass by sea block was not matched well with those of total catch and CPUE, however pattern of time-series change in total zooplankton biomass was similar to that in total squid catch.

  • The mixotrophic marine ciliate Mesodinium rubrum possesses a highly modified algal endosymbiont as a nutrition source for the species. Accordingly, we assumed that the species can reflect the ecotoxicity on marine producer (as phytoplankton) and consumer (as zooplankton) both. A series of experiments were conducted to identify the potential of the species as a standard test species for marine ecotoxicological study. The comparison of species sensitivity on reference toxic materials was made using potassium dichromate for phytoplankton and copper chloride for zooplankton. The ciliate revealed the highest sensitivity on both reference materials among the seven test species including phytoplankton, benthic copepod and rotifer species. The toxicity end point of the species was 72hr-$EC_{50}$=1.52 mg/L (as potassium dichromate) estimated by population growth inhibition (PGI), which is more sensitive than the most sensitive phytoplankton Skeletonema costatum (72hr-$EC_{50}$=3.05 mg/L). As comparison to rotifer, it also revealed higher sensitivity on copper chloride; 72hr-$EC_{50}$=0.38 mg/L for ciliate and 48hr-$EC_{50}$=0.48 mg/L for rotifer. Also, the elutriate toxicity test of various ocean disposal wastes were conducted to identify the potential of ciliate toxicity test application using industrial waste sludges. The toxicity of leather processing waste sludge was highest on the ciliate, followed by dyeing waste sludge and dye production waste sludge as an increasing order of toxicity. 72h-$EC_{50}$ of ciliate PGI test was 1.83% and that of S. costatum 3.84% for leather waste sludge which showed highest toxicity. The toxicity test results also revealed that the highest sensitivity was observed on ciliate species on ocean disposed sludge wastes. Also, ciliate toxicity test well discriminated the degree of toxicity between sludge sources; 72h-$EC_{50}$ values were 1.83% for leather processing waste sludge, 16.75% for dye production waste sludge and 27.75% for textile production waste sludge. Even the laboratory culture methods of the species were not generally established yet, the species has high potential as the standard test species for marine toxicity test in terms of the dual reflection of phyto- and zooplankton toxicity from single test, sensitivity and test replicability.

  • Multitrophic interactions among gelatinous planktivores, zooplankton, and phytoplankton were in vestigated in Reeves Bay. New York from mid-March to July in 1989 to evaluate the top-down effect by gelatinous macrozooplankton on the Gyrodinium aureolum bloom through cascading tropic interactions. Zooplankton abundances reached maximal density following a decrease in gelatinous macrozooplankton (hydromedusae and scyphomedusae) abundances, and phytoplankton biomass was low at this time. Subsequently, as ctenophore populations increased zooplankton abundances decreased sharply, and the cell concnetration of G. aureolum began to increase. This field observation supports that the top-down control by gelatinous macrozooplankton on grazers, resulting in low grazing pressure on phytoplankton, can cause an algal bloom. The minimal zooplankton grazing measured using /SUP 14/C tracer technique during the bloom period indicated that zooplankton did not prefer G. aureolum as a good source.

  • The impact of freshwater discharge on plankton was investigated in a semi-closed Cheonsu Bay during the rainy season. Field observations for environmental factors (seawater temperatures, salinities, chlorophyll a concentrations and nutrient concentrations) and zooplankton sampling were carried out from June 27 to September 1, 2012 at about 10 days interval. The relationship between the measured parameters and estimated values of zooplankton abundance were examined. After freshwater discharge, nutrient concentrations increased up to about twice and resultant increase of chlorophyll a followed within about 10 days. Both positive and negative impacts on zooplankton were observed. Positive one was the numerical response of zooplankton on this increased food supply, and negative one was the increased mortality caused by sudden changes in salinity. Maximum mortality of copepods was found to be up to 40%, although fast sinking of carcass made it difficult to estimate reliable mortality caused by salinity shock.
