  • The aim of this review is to provide perspectives on the application of remote sensing techniques for observation of marine environmental changes on various spatio-temporal scales. Currently available remote sensing technologies are reviewed and future direction is suggested. For better utilization of remote sensing, a comprehensive plan should be developed by a demand-side and problem-solving approach. Marine environmental changes should be observed on proper spatio-temporal scales where the processes occur. For appropriate observation and monitoring of various environmental changes in coastal regions, more sensors must be utilized. Platforms other than satellites should also be utilized to expand the spatio-temporal scales of observation. Calibration/validation activities, required for accurate interpretation of remotely sensed data, could utilize buoys and ship-of-opportunity sensors. It is desirable that such systems by developed as a part of an integrated monitoring network.

  • To prevent pollution from ships, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a mandatory guideline for all new ships. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has also been applied by MARPOL to all existing ships. SEEMP provides the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for monitoring the operational efficiency of a ship. By monitoring the EEOI, the shipowner or operator can establish strategic plans, such as routing, hull cleaning, decommissioning, new building, etc. The key parameter in calculating EEOI is Fuel Oil Consumption (FOC). It can be measured on board while a ship is operating. This means that only the shipowner or operator can calculate the EEOI of their own ships. If the EEOI can be calculated without the actual FOC, however, then the other stakeholders, such as the shipbuilding company and Class, or others who don't have the measured FOC, can check how efficiently their ships are operating compared to other ships. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the EEOI without requiring the actual FOC. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, ship static data, and environment data that can be publicly obtained are used to calculate the EEOI. Since the public data are of large capacity, big data technologies, specifically Hadoop and Spark, are used. We verify the proposed method using actual data, and the result shows that the proposed method can estimate EEOI from public data without actual FOC.

  • A marine diesel engine should realize optimal operation efficiency while reducing NOx, PM (Particulate Matters) and other emissions. Fuel injection systems that use electronic control can become an effective means of achieving that objective. However. it still needs some accurate and instant information in order to bring its ability into full potential while sailing on the sea. The important information of them are a shaft torque and continuous combustion pressures of all cylinders. The shaft torque and the propeller thrust described in this paper are measured at an intermediate shaft by using a unique principle that one of two electromagnet coils oscillates a vibrating strip which the length changes with force and the other coil picks up the change of the frequency of the vibrating strip. For further reference, the shaft power meter multiplied the torque by the shaft revolution has already had about 750 sets of sales performance. The research presented in this paper started about ten years ago and is concerned with the development of a combustion pressure sensor that uses the same principle. Recently, the pressure sensor which bears continuous operation has been developed after a hard struggle, that is, the system that consists of a shaft horsepower meter, a propeller thrust meter and a combustion pressure sensor has been completed and has been shown to be reliable. This paper describes the configuration of this system, the material of the combustion pressure sensor, the principle of that, and the improving point of the sensor, and, we finally consider the use of this system.

  • The marine transport industry generally applies new technologies later than other transport industries, such as airways and railways. Vessels require efficient operation, and their performance and lifespan depend on the level of maintenance and management. Many studies have shown that corrective maintenance (CM) and time-based maintenance (TBM) have restrictions with respect to enabling efficient maintenance of workload and cost to improve operational efficiency. Predictive maintenance (PdM) is an advanced technology that allows monitoring the condition and performance of a target machine to predict its time of failure and helps maintain the key machinery in optimal working conditions at all times. This study presents the development of a marine predictive maintenance (MPdM; maritime predictive maintenance) method based on applying PdM to the marine environment. The MPdM scheme is designed by considering the special environment of the marine transport industry and the extreme marine conditions. Further, results of the study elaborates upon the concept of MPdM and its necessity to advancing marine transportation in the future.

  • In this paper, we describe application service development for secure land and marine transport based on CSD (Conveyance Security Device) systems. Based on CSD systems, we present application service and security service according to relevant standards as well as test procedure of developed services. Exploiting temperature, moisture, impact sensors, state monitoring function of container freight was developed to prevent disaster during transportation in addition to security function with CSD. For confidentiality of messages exchanged among application service entity and CSD systems, Encryption and decryption functions going by RC5 and AES-128 algorithms were implemented at desktop PC and 8 bit CPU environments, respectively. Measuring the elapsed time during encryption and decryption shows that two algorithms are allowable for the application service.

  • Since late 1970s, water quality monitoring had been performed in Korea by various agencies according to their own needs and objectives. Lacking of consistency in principles, such diverse operation has been producing difficulties in management of information on water quality parameters. These difficulties resulted from the fact that the expansion of monitoring networks had been based not on systematic methodology with considerations on scientifically established planning objectives but on personal experiences and subjective judgments in locating monitoring stations. This study aimed, therefore, to develop a selection methodology for locating monitoring stations to provide various informations on water quality to satisfy various monitoring objectives such as understanding short and long term trends of water quality, monitoring violations to water quality standards, identifying external causes and sources affecting water quality changes, supporting utilization of water resources, examining short-term variations in water quality through a concentrated investigation, estimating pollution loads from each unit watershed, supporting water quality modeling, and establishing informative systems for water resources management. Also, we applied the proposed methodology and presented an improved expansion plan for water quality monitoring networks in the Han River.

  • As power facilities are getting higher at capacity, the monitoring and diagnosis of generators for fault detection and protection has attracted intensive interest. In case of an after-fault in high capacity rotating machines, the recovering cost is usually very expensive and additional time is necessary for returning in a normal situation. In this paper, we developed the protection program for the generator fault protection system and each module of the digital protective relay H/W for loading the protection program. The protective relay H/W was designed to have EMC characteristics for prohibiting from fault operation in bad power systems.

  • A fiber-optic liquid level sensor based on bending cantilever beam has been proposed. A fiber Bragg grating(FBG) embedded in the cantilever beam is used to sensing elements. The basic concept is elongation and constriction of the FBG corresponding to the liquid level variation. The best FBG position on the cantilever for obtaining the high sensitivity was 4 cm from the fixing point. When the liquid level moves up and down vertically, the Bragg wavelength is linearly shifted. But, the wavelength sensitivity of the FBG installed on the upper side of cantilever was four times better than that of the FBG equipped in the lateral side due to the difference of unit strain applied to the FBG. Intensity demodulation using the low-cost edge filter is used to interrogate the Bragg wavelength through converting the wavelength signals into the optical intensity ones. Experiment results show that the electrical output is exponentially proportional to the liquid level. But, it should be overcome for applying to the ships.

  • Power distribution systems onboard vessels are typically configured without any live line connected to hulls for earthing purpose, where the line to hull voltages are affected and deformed depending on the impedances consisting of insulation resistances and distributed capacitances between power lines and hull. An insulation fault at power lines causes the line to hull voltages to increase to a higher level which brings more possibilities to electric shock and deterioration of insulation material. This study focuses on how to configure a module which enables to continuously monitor the voltages between power line and hull based on the vector diagram by analyzing the neutral point of 3 phase voltages and the algorithm for plotting method on the PC monitors.

  • When 2 sets of PID controllers are coupled directly each other to configure a closed control loop on behalf of coupling a controller and a plant. the behaviors or this exclusive loop system are expected to be unique in inherent system responses. If its properties be disclosed and generalized well in advance, it is possible for us to use the results for the purpose of fault detection and performance monitoring between control stations from the stage of system design. particularly in such cases as cascade control systems. In this paper. general properties of the proposed system are analyzed firstly to check whether it is controllable and how its steady responses would be. To simplify calculation, the analysis has been performed based on the transfer equation derived from a modelled case which consists of 2 PI controllers and signal converters between them. including time delay element and first-lag element to consider the situation of signal transmission. The results acquired from simulation are suggested to show how it works actually.
