In this study, to analyze the correlation of surface chloride and corrosion amount level according to the installation location of steel members exposed to the marine environment, the surface chloride and mean corrosion depth were evaluated by member units for box girder members of the offshore steel bridge and box specimens. The surface chloride was measured monthly using the Bresle method for one year. The corrosion amount was evaluated by converting the weight loss due to corrosion products generated in the monitoring steel plate into mean corrosion depth. As a measurement result of the surface chloride and corrosion amount, relative differences in surface chloride and mean corrosion depth were appeared depending on the shape or installation location of the steel members. Moreover, even if members of the same shape were installed in the same bridge, it was confirmed that the corrosion amount was increased locally and rapidly. The tendency of corrosion amount depending on the surface chloride was evaluated to analyze the correlation between surface chloride and corrosion amount, and the relation equations that can asseses the corrosion amount depending on the surface chloride were analyzed. From the results of the correlation between surface chloride and corrosion amount, it was found that the corrosion amount of the steel member affected by the surface chloride was varied up to about 1.15 times depending on the structural detail.

The scale effects on the permanent deformations and fractures of structures subjected to impact loadings have been aware by structural engineers for a long time. Experimental investigations have been performed with various structures to demonstrate the effects, but very few are directly related with marine structural elements. Furthermore, the causes of the scale effects have not clearly been answered yet. In this study, to quantify the scale effects on the permanent deflections, lateral collision tests were performed on steel unstiffened plates and the numerical analyses of the tested models were also conducted using a commercial package, Abaqus. After the substantiation of the numerical tool using the test results, a parametric study was carried out considering and neglecting the strain-rate hardening. Based upon the parametric study results, it may be concluded that the main cause of the scale effects on the permanent deflections of steel unstiffened plates subjected to lateral collision loads is the strain-rate effects.
A steel plated is typically composed of plate panels. The overall failure of the structure is certainly affected and can be governed by the bulking and plastic collapse of these individual members In the ultimate limit state design. therefore. a primary task is to accurately calculate the budding and plastic collapse strength of such structural members. Structural elements making up steel palated structures do not work separately. resulting in high degree of redundancy and complexity in contrast to those of steel framed structures. To enable the behavior of such structures to be analyzed, simplifications or idealizations must essentially be made considering the accuracy need and degree of complexity of the analysis to be used Generally the more complex the analysis the greater is the accuracy that may be obtained. The aim of this study is the investigation of the effect of the tripping behaviour including section characteristic for a plate under uniaxial compression.
As the regulations on greenhouse gas emissions at sea become strict, efforts are being made to minimize environmental pollutants emitted from fossil fuels used by ships. Considering the large sizes of ships in conjunction with securing stable supplies of environment-friendly energy, interest in nuclear energy to power ships has been increasing. In this study, the neutron irradiation that occurs during the nuclear reactor operation and its effect on the structural responses of the stiffened-plate structures are investigated. This is done by changing the material properties of DH36 steel according to the research findings on the neutron-irradiated steels and then performing the structural response analyses of the structures using analytical and finite-element numerical solutions. Results reveal the influence of neutron irradiation on the structural responses of the structures. It is shown that both the strength and stiffness of the structures are affected by the neutron-irradiation phenomenon as their maximum flexural stress and deflection are increased with the increase in the amount of neutron irradiation. This implies that strength and stiffness need to be considered in the design of ships equipped with marine nuclear reactors.
Steel corrosion is one of the most critical deteriorations in concrete structures due to the problems associated with both durability and structural safety issues. For protection of steel against corrosion problems, researches to improve concrete durability and steel corrosion protection such as rebar coating by hot-dip galvanizing steel have been carried out. This study was performed to quantitatively evaluate anti-corrosion and structural performance of concrete structures reinforced with hot-dip galvanizing steel rebar. Preliminary tests for several metal coatings such as zinc, aluminum, and their alloy (Zn 45% + AL 55%) were performed. After evaluation of corrosive characteristics, Zn was selected for the coating material and the corrosion behaviors in Zn-coated steel were evaluated in various conditions. Furthermore, tensile and adhesive strengths were evaluated for the normal and the hot-dip galvanized steel. The crack patterns and structural behaviors of RC specimens with the normal and coated steel were investigated. Also, corrosion characteristics including corrosion in various coating metal and potential change in metal with notch were evaluated. Structural performances of tensile and adhesive strengths as well as RC beam behavior under flexural/shear loading were evaluated. The test and evaluation results showed that the applicability of hot-dip galvanized steel rebar can be used as corrosion resistant reinforcements for RC structures.

Metaheuristic algorithms are efficient techniques for a class of mathematical optimization problems without having to deeply adapt to the inherent nature of each problem. They are very useful for structural design optimization in which the cost of gradient computation can be very expensive. Among them, the characteristics of simulated annealing and genetic algorithms are briefly discussed. In Metropolis genetic algorithm, favorable features of Metropolis criterion in simulated annealing are incorporated in the reproduction operations of simple genetic algorithm. Numerical examples of structural design optimization are presented. The example structures are truss, breakwater and steel box girder bridge. From the theoretical evaluation and numerical experience, performance and applicability of metaheuristic algorithms for structural design optimization are discussed.
The cathodic protection method is being widely used in marine structural steel, however a high tensile steel like RE 36 steel for marine structural steel is easy to get hydrogen embrittlement due to over protection during cathodic protection as well as preferential corrosion of HAZ(Heating Affected Zone) part. In this paper, corrosion resistance and mechanical properties such as elongation and hydrogen embrittlement were investigated with not only in terms of electrochemical view but also SSRT(Slow Strain Rate Test) method with applied constant cathodic potential, analysis of SEM fractography in case of both As-welded and PWHT(Post-Weld Heat Treatment) of $550^{\circ}C$. The best effect for corrosion resistance was apparently indicated at PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ and elongation was increased with PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ than that of As-welded condition. On the other hand. Elongation was decreased with applied potential shifting to low potential direction which may be caused by hydrogen embrittlement, however the susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement was decreased with PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$ than that of As-welded condition and Q.C(quasi cleavage) fracture mode was also observed significantly according to increasing of susceptibility of hydrogen embrittlement. Eventually it is suggested that an optimum cathodic protection potential range not causing hydrogen embrittlernent is from -770 mV(SCE) to -850 mV(SCE) in As-welded condition while is from -770 mV(SCE) to -875 mV(SCE) in PWHT of $550^{\circ}C$.

In order to evaluate the applicability of steel slag aggregates for tetrapod concrete, the properties of concrete as structural material were investigated. The biochemical research of marine concrete using steel slag aggregates was also carried out. The tested concrete properties are slump, air content, compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus, carbonation, hydration heat, freezing and thawing, sulfate attack, drying shrinkage, etc. The biochemical experiments are carried to research the propagation and reproduction of seaweeds and survival of bottom dwelling species. According to the experimental results, the steel slag aggregate content did not have a significant effect on compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus. The durability of concrete was not influenced by the steel slag aggregate content. From the biochemical research, steel slag aggregate can be evaluated as the material that is ideally suited for promoting propagation and reproduction of seaweeds and survival of bottom dwelling species.
Microcracks can rapidly grow and develop in high-strength steels used in offshore structures. It is important to render these microcracks harmless to ensure the safety and reliability of offshore structures. Here, the dependence of the aspect ratio (As) of the maximum depth of harmless crack (ahlm) was evaluated under three different conditions considering the threshold stress intensity factor (Δkth) and residual stress of offshore structural steel F690. The threshold stress intensity factor and fatigue limit of fatigue crack propagation, dependent on crack dimensions, were evaluated using Ando's equation, which considers the plastic behavior of fatigue and the stress ratio. ahlm by peening was analyzed using the relationship between Δkth obtained by Ando's equation and Δkth obtained by the sum of applied stress and residual stress. The plate specimen had a width 2W = 12 mm and thickness t = 20 mm, and four value of As were considered: 1.0, 0.6, 0.3, and 0.1. The ahlm was larger as the compressive residual stress distribution increased. Additionally, an increase in the values of As and Δkth(l) led to a larger ahlm. With a safety factor (N) of 2.0, the long-term safety and reliability of structures constructed using F690 can be secured with needle peening. It is necessary to apply a more sensitive non-destructive inspection technique as a non-destructive inspection method for crack detection could not be used to observe fatigue cracks that reduced the fatigue limit of smooth specimens by 50% in the three types of residual stresses considered. The usefulness of non-destructive inspection and non-damaging techniques was reviewed based on the relationship between ahlm, aNDI (minimum crack depth detectable in non-destructive inspection), acr N (crack depth that reduces the fatigue limit to 1/N), and As.
This is the fifth in a series of companion papers dealing with the dynamic hardening properties of various marine structural steels at intermediate strain rates. Five steps of strain rate levels (0.001, 1, 10, 100, 200/s) and three steps of temperature levels (LT ($-40^{\circ}C$), RT, and HT ($200^{\circ}C$)) were taken into account for the dynamic tensile tests of three types of marine structural steels: API 2W50 and Classifications EH36 and DH36. The total number of specimens was 180 pieces. It was seen that the effects of dynamic hardening became clearer at LT than at RT. Dynamic strain aging accompanying serrated flow stress curves was also observed from high temperature tests for all kinds of steels. The dynamic hardening factors (DHFs) at the two temperature levels of LT and RT were derived at the three plastic strain levels of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 from dynamic tensile tests. Meanwhile, no DHFs were found for the high temperature tests because a slight negative strain rate dependency due to dynamic strain aging had occurred. A new formulation to determine material constant D in a Cowper-Symonds constitutive equation is provided as a function of the plastic strain rate, as well as the plastic strain level. The proposed formula is verified by comparing with test flow stress curves, not only at intermediate strain rate ranges but also at high strain rate ranges.
