Apparent digestibility coefficients of the extruded pellet diets containing various fish meals for olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus

  • Apparent digestibility coefficients (ADCs) of dry matter, crude protein, crude lipid, energy, essential amino acids, and fatty acids in extruded pellets containing various fish meals were determined for olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). Eight extruded pellet diets were prepared to contain different fish meals (herring fish meal, anchovy fish meal, mackerel fish meal, sardine fish meal-A, sardine fish meal-B, tuna fish meal, pollock fish meal-A, and pollock fish meal-B) designated as HM, AM, MM, SM-A, SM-B, TM, PM-A, and PM-B, respectively. Chromic oxide ($Cr_2O_3$) was used as an inert indicator at a concentration of 0.5 % in the diet. Feces were collected from triplicate groups of fish ($151{\pm}4.0g$) using a fecal collection column attached to the fish rearing tank for 4 weeks. Dry matter ADCs of the MM, SM-A, SM-B, and PM-A diets were higher than those of all the other dietary groups, and the lowest digestibility of dry matter was observed in the PM-B diet. Fish fed the MM, SM-A, and PM-A diets showed significantly higher ADC of protein than those fed the AM, SM-B, TM, and PM-B diets. Lipid ADC of PM-B was significantly lower than that of the other diets. Energy ADCs of fish fed the MM, SM-A, and PM-A diets were significantly higher than those of the other diets. The availability of essential amino acids in the MM, SM-A, and PM-A diets were generally higher than that of the other fish meal diets, while TM showed the lowest values among all the experimental diets. ADCs of fatty acids in the AM, MM, SM-A, and PM-A diets were generally higher than those of fatty acids in the other diets, and the lowest values were recorded for the PM-B diet. These results provide information on the bioavailability of nutrients and energy in various fish meals which can be used to properly formulate practical extruded feeds for olive flounder.

Phenotypic characteristics and antimicrobial susceptibilities of motile aeromonads isolated from freshwater fish in Korea and Japan (한국과 일본의 담수어에서 분리되는 운동성 aeromonads의 표현형적 특성과 약제감수성)

  • We investigated the phenotypic characteristics by using API20E, APIZYM and determined minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 7 antibiotics in motile aeromonads isolated from freshwater fishes in Korea and Japan, and 4 American Type Culture Collection (ATCC) strains. All isolates (n=7) were identified as motile Aeromonas species according to API20E test. Lysine decarboxylase activity and acid production from 4 different carbohydrates including mannitol, rhamnose, amygdalin and arabinose were observed in various strains. In enzymatic activities by APIZYM, all isolates showed negative reactions in valine and cystine arylamidases, α-chymotrypsin, α-galactosidase, β-glucuronidase, α-glucosidase, α-mannosidase and α-fucosidase. Although the intensities of each enzymatic activity were diverse in alkaline phosphatase, esterase-lipase, leucine arylamidase, β-galactosidase and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase, all isolates showed positive reactions. All isolates were resistant to ampicillin sodium (MIC>100㎍/ml), but sensitive to chloramphenicol (MIC≤1.6㎍/ml). However, recently isolated strains (AC9804, AC0202 and GMA0361) were commonly resistant to tetracycline (MIC=50㎍/ml). Furthermore, AC9804 was resistant to oxolinic acid (MIC=12.5㎍/ml). GMA0361 was resistant to kanamycin sulfate (MIC>100㎍/ml) and streptomycin sulfate (MIC>100 ㎍/ml).

Effects of Tiamulin on Starry Flounder, Platichthys stellatus Infected with Streptococcus parauberis HFTC0083 (Tiamulin이 Streptococcus parauberis HFTC0083에 감염된 강도다리(Platichthys stellatus)에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to control disease caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria in the aquaculture, the use of veterinary antibiotics, which are prohibited to fish, is increasing, instead of the existing fisheries antibiotics. Among them, tiamulin is illegally used in some cultured fish because it exhibits effective antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. To prevent unauthorized use, treatment of fish should be accompanied by a prescription from veterinarians or fisheries disease managers through research on fish of tiamulin. Tiamulin was injected intramuscularly at 5, 10 and 15 mg kg-1 for the streptococcus-infected starry flounder, but did not show any therapeutic effect. Oral administration at a concentration of 15 and 30 mg kg-1 was similarly ineffective. The concentrations of 30 and 60 mg kg-1 resulted in death due to toxicity of antibiotics. Therefore, it is inappropriate to treat antibiotics with streptococcus-infected starry flounder.

  • Anthropogenic underwater sound such as ship radiated noise, pile driving noise. underwater explosive blast and so on, affects marine animals. This study describes the effects of underwater noise on fishes. The characteristics of noise, fish hearing and response, and sound propagation loss are analysed based on existing results and measured data in marine construction site. Finally, the safety zone range of fish on man made underwater noise is derived.

Variations in Species Composition, Biomass, and Density in Shrimp Trawl Bycatch Across Seasons and Tidal Phases in Southern Korean Waters: Developing a Fisheries Risk Management Approach

  • We quantitatively investigated compositions of fish and invertebrate bycatch in Korean shrimp fisheries. We sampled shrimp trawl bycatch from 48 commercial trawls over 1 year. These samples contained 108 taxa from 50 families, with 60 fish taxa contributing 51.2% of the total biomass and 48 invertebrate taxa 48.8%. However, 86.32% of the total individual organism density comprised invertebrates, while individual fishes made up the remainder. Within the bycatch, two fish species varied in population size structure by season, suggesting recruitment is seasonal in these taxa. Overall general catch characteristics (total bycatch biomass and organism density) varied significantly by season and tide, and a significant interaction effect was observed (season$\times$tide) on total density, but not on total biomass. The data collected will be used in designing a program of long-term bycatch monitoring.

  • This study describes the optimum size of a reef set in Korean coastal waters. Data were analyzed in relation to the weight and variety of fish species caught with a three-layer gill net. The results did not indicate a significant difference in the mean catch and mean number of fish species among the three different reef sets, 800, 1,600 and 2400 $m^3$.

  • Salted anchovy, generally favored in Europe, is one of the traditional fermented fish products in southern European countries and raw anchovy are aged in 20∼30% NaCl solution for 6 months (Ishida et al., 1994). They are then steeped in oil in glass jar or can, and marketed. The salt-fermented fish sauce, such as anchovy sauce and shrimp sauce are tropical fermented seafood from fish in Korea. (omitted)

  • This study analyzed the multivariate impacts of subsidies on the sustainability of fish stock using a dynamic bioeconomic modeling and fisheries resources economic approaches for understanding impacts of a subsidy on the sustainability of a fish stock. According to the results of analysis, the conclusion of former studies is true only there are imperfect control of fishing effort and enforcement under management rerime and under open access. However, if there are perfect control of effort and enforcement, the subsidies do not give any negative impacts on the sustainability of fish stock. Further, if even so-called bad subsidy is also provided necessarily in response to the condition of fishing industry and the characteristic of fishermen, it can give positive impacts on fishing income by which fishermen can improve their fishing condition.

  • Dietary lipids are important sources of energy and of essential fatty acids (EFA). Providing desired amounts of EFA is necessary for the normal growth and survival of juvenille fish. EFA requirements of fish are affected by fish species, water temperature and salinity, and different from those of terrestrial animals (Castell 1979). EFA affect the fluidity and permeability of membranes, enzymes activity and are known as the precursors of the eicosanoids. (omitted)

First report of Paranophrys marina (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Scuticociliatia) isolated from olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea: morphological and phylogenetic analysis

  • Scuticociliates are one of the serious parasitic threats faced by the marine aquaculturists worldwide. To date, Uronema nigricans, Philasterides dicentrarchi, Miamiensis avidus, Uronema marinum, and Pseudocohnilembus persalinus have been reported as the important culprit species causing scuticociliatosis in fish. The present paper reports the finding of an additional scuticociliate isolate from the gill of diseased olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea. Based on the morphological characteristics, a scuticociliate in this study was identified as Paranophrys marina. Phylogenetic analysis placed P. marina as a sister lineage to three species of Pseudocohnilembus and Mesanophrys carcini within the order Philasterida.
